  1. I can place anyone interested around prior commitments if there is a problem. I had someone who originally had to leave by 3 to pick her children up from school and she alwasy left on time. So if there are constraints just let me know upfront. I dont mind at all.
  2. That boy of yours is HUGE! Love the ears.. He looks fabulous to me! Glad we got some pics.
  3. Still waiting for picture updates poodle wrangler.
  4. When your pup gets messy and smelly. When i got my poodle I was wash her rear end almost everyday because she was so messy (consiquently found out it was medical) But her first real bath was for about 3 weeks after I got her but i wanted her to get use to it. My goldie went neary a month before his. I have clients that have there dogs washed once a week, fourtnight, month, 8 weeks. It depends on you and your puppy. Most people wash there small dogs more often because they are inside and on your lap so you dont want a smelly dog. But i let my two who are inside dogs get pretty filthy before their bath. They smell terrible to me but no one else can smell it. My stinky babies.
  5. Actually grooming time from start to finish for us is between 45 and an hour depending on coat length. We preclip the very long or matted but the others go straight to the bath. But total time at my salon is about 2 hours because we dont cage them and let them all run around and play together with supervision. They LOVE it! And so do the owners and if the owners dont then there dogs are put in another area so they cant play. We charge a flat rate $45 for a small dog and the only time we charge more is if there are a lot of knots and the owner expects us to brush them out. I had a m/s that I charged $60 for because its ears were badlyknotted and around its head and neck and took nearly an hour just to brush them out. We are very gentle and the dog was so patient didnt even squirm. We under no circumstances brush out fully matted or felted dogs! I have 3 felts that im keeping to show my lazy clients what will happen if they dont wake up and its working. All winter people ahve still kept their appts so it wouldnt happen come spring. Makes it a lot easier for us now. I learnt how to clip by a woman who relied totally on clippers and only scissored feet. I self taught haw to hand scissor and especially to do poodle and bichon looks. The combined the two. I love being able to do both on a dog and get it totally smooth in half the time and the fact Im taking on so many new clients by recomendation of other I have to be dong somthing right. Im with NicoleL and Doggrooma. I do the same clean armpit and groins unless told not too. and usually can in about 45 to and hour.
  6. scattered Days. Was looking for a couple of people to replace a tleast one current position. We trade Monday to Saturday 8.30 to 4.30. But there would be about 3 days in it for each person. If not more. Also potential for being trained to clip. I thought here would be a great place. Anyone can apply and I will consider them. Ive got a woman who works for me that lives just out of Mallalar (I think thats how you spell it) she works 2days and stays with her daughter in the city or her sister in law that my bestfriend who is the other clipper. We are a close knit business.
  7. I have a casual wash and dryer position available at my salon in eastern Adelaide. PM me. Experience not essential and I dont have to say avid dog lovers because no one would be here if they weren't. lol
  8. I have 2 mini's that have short cuts on 5f and one 7f and i find a big difference in them, Despite having the same coats. The 7f looks more smooth and velvety that the 5f but thats me. I agree with everyone for a standard leave the legs longer although i would persoanlly go with a 4f for the legs not a 3f. just more in proportion but its all relative to your taste. And i think your standard boy is abolutely stunning!
  9. For the wheaten's that i do are totally different from eachother. One gets a #3 all over with a wheaten head and the other has a 3/4" blade accross the bach lightly graded into the lower body and legs and a fluffy head. then lots of hand scissoring. He always has bad knots and takes about 2and a half hours to brush and a further hour and a half atleast to clip. If knots are bad shes up for around $80 if not $60. She's got arthritis in her hands so i dont charge as much with her pension card. and hes in every 2 weeks. Doubt she brushes him at home at all though, If he goes 3 or 4 weeks without a groom I have to set aside a specific person to brush him. ;) All i have to say is... good luck sammy_ballerina
  10. I've found with my westie pup clients that if you clip the back of the ears it helps also. One puppy was done every month till 6 months and the ears stood up perfectly. Before the clipping was done his ears were floppy and when he was due for his clip they would flop again after about 6 months thye stood opn there oen with or without fur. It doesnt hurt them just trains them to stand upright. He is gorgeous!!! and I love his name
  11. Its nice to hear that someone is concerned that their dog has been clipped too long instead of saying the groomer shaved their pup. Its a change as a groomer because all I see to hear and read is that its too short. lol My first advice though would be to go back to the groomer and tell them that it was a little too long and can they just clip the length shorter this time and see what they do. I have very rarely got it right on length the first time I have groomed a new client. Some people thing that 1/2' is shaved where as other thing 5mm is too long. Give the groomer a chance if you were happy with the quality but they just didnt get the length right. If you were unhappy with quality like even length or clipper burns then go elsewhere or do it yourseslf. Depends on the maltese coat as has been stated by showdog but i will usually use a 1/2 inch length or a 1/4inch for a maltese coat and depending on which but some maltese and crosses need clipping every 4 weeks with the really long length. The shorter that they are clipped the longer the clip will last its simple. most people have a #3 which is about a quarter of an inch. they get regular trims 6 to 12 weeks dependeing on budget and how well they keep their dogs knot free. Example of one of the maltese looks we can do Im in adelaide if you would like any help just pm me. Good luck Sally.
  12. Im so glad to hear its worked for you benny!!!! Shes going well.. Totally toilet trained now, no rashes, UTIs, constant licking. Nothing. Healed very quickly a little longer and you wont ever be able to see where they shaved her! Shes doing so very well!!!!! Im glad I did it. Now shes on clomical for anxiety and we have a trainer helping us with her fearfullness. so all in all things are looking up for my little mutt butt
  13. I did the same thing toilet training. My comand was 'on the grass' followed by big wee wees good puppy on my goodness and then a tiny treat and a cuddle. worked like a charm fo the goldie but still traing the poodle but she has had something wrong with her and it was taken a lot longer to get it all fixed. Now everythign is great! But the funniest thing is that not my goldie will only go the toilet when he's being watch!!! he loves it because he wants to get old he is a good dog. So when i say to my freidsn im going to put the dog out for a wee they dont realise that means me too and they cant believe I watch. But if i go to walk on the other side of the yard he'll stop mid streama nd wait for me to turn around and watch again. I didnt crate train either of my pups but rather pen trainged. Had a large puppy pen that i would settle them into. My goldie loved it my poodle hated is but got use to it. Dont use it now but it helped teach then to settle at night and that its notplay time. thay were trained in the bedroom which has carpet but we put a tarp down and newspaper on top. Hope that might help.
  14. I have one particular labxpoodle owner at my salon who has her little boy done with a #10 all over. He is super active and down the beach all the time and hates being inside and would rather be out having fun so every 5 weeks through summer he get re clipped to keep him really short, then taken with a #3 in winter but he has his head off to the same length as the body and the tail an inch long. Its personal preference as to what you like the look of. If you dont want a full head, dont have one. If you want to #10 your dog considering ticks and heat then do it it you wont mind that look. The biggest difference i see if the skip tooth to full is that the full generally gives a smoother look and less clipper lines in certain coats. hope thats helped.
  15. yes they were eyelashes. They are no different to any other section of his fur and they will grow back as the rest of Blayds coat grows. Its personal preference about cutting them. If you like them short then cut them if you like them long then dont. Its not a health issue! hope thats helped from a groomers perspective.
  16. Personality is the major componant. The most important. Confidence with the dogs, a good manner, proffessional and well groomed. Love of animals and the want to learn, eager to try new things and not be affraid of being chucked in at the deep end. Owning a dog yourself isnt nessesary. When i started at the company i hadnt had a dog for nearly 6 years and after taking over the business as my own i now have 2 of them. And i have a staff member who only has a cat. I prefer peopel with no to little training because then i can train them how I want them to do things. But the previous owner had hired 2 women who ha d experience. They fine tuned their abilities and opened up their own business from home in direct competition. But it wouldnt stop me from hiring someone with experience.
  17. Any news on how the removal has gone? Im contemplating ahving my poodles done but i opted not to do it when she was speyed last week cause she was have corrective surgery as well and didnt want to hit her with 3 things at once. Would love to know how it went?
  18. I like grip soft small nail clippers and Wahl scissors i use straight line, curved and thinning all wahl. But i can get them wholesale. Even wholesale the smallest pib-nosed scissors are still $24 ish so god knows how much places sell them on for!
  19. Lawrence tendercare slicker all the way for me! Love 'em! Use them at my salon too.
  20. Well 7 days later and things are going great! All is healing well and her vulva looks NORMAL!!!!!!!!! ;) She can urinate normally and is also urinating less fequently She is still sooking alot but i think she is just trying to milk it. Ive still got the bucket on her head for the momnet and until i feel confident that she wont lick and bite the stitches and as its really itchy at the moment i think ill leave the bucket on till later in the week. But i definately think its worth the stress to have it done. Benny123 i hope your girls doing well!
  21. As an owner of a salon and as a person that has done a couple of animal courses at TAFE i would say that it is a waste of time. Especially if you are looking to become a groomer professionally. They show you breed specifics and how to use a hydrobath but it wont help you get a job. I wouldnt even consider that if i were looking at you as an applicant. Get a job in a salon and get training on the job. Its the only way to get really good. Especially if you have a great trainer and a bit of a creative flare. If you want to groom for yourself for your own dog just do the WEA one. They will show you and teach you the basics on brushing, washing and clipping your own dog. Hope that has helped.
  22. She is healing really fast! Finds it a little hard to get comfortable with the elisabethan collar on but at least she can't eat her stitches which she would be doing if she weren't wearing it. He brother hates it too because she hits him in the head with it. We had to move our lounge suite because she couldnt fit between :D And she keeps hitting me in the back of my knees with it when she wants attention. It wasn't meant to be a toy to terrorise her family with. Its funny that she is toilet traing NOW because of the surgery. Just shows unconfortable it must have been to be urinating all the time and now not to be. She is such a good girl. Im so proud of her!
  23. The frowning face is the cut the vet has made for correction of the "innie" not what it looked like before. It was descirbed to me as malconformation of the vulva. Inverted. Thats what the vet said to me and that dogs are just born with it. When you look at Her from behind you could only see a fat fold and when She was on her back you could barely see the longest tip of her vulva. I had to really pull the skin and fat away to be able to see the slit and put cream on it all the time. Now that she has had the surgery you can see about half her vulva sticking out from inbetween her thighs from behind when she walks. Much more normal. My niggest bitch in this is that i didnt know about this when I bought her... Wouldn't have mattered because i would have taken her anyway but wouold have been nice to know so i could prepare myself for the $$$. Im SO happy with the result because we ahd been having a lot of trouble toile training. She would wee all the time but not I have to really wait for her to wee when i take them outside. Last night was the first time ive gone out since we got her and found no wee on the floor in the back room. Its done wonders! Yes D&D I do have a goldie and there are pics of him in the breed subforum of him. I had him firs tbut he's been a breeze to own. His names Rico. Been following you handsome dogs and all you piccies.
  24. I had my Isabella de-sexed on Monday morning and she gone from 13.8kgs which was already waaaaaaay to thin (but i cant keep weight on her because she is nervy) to 11.9 in 3 days! She's not really eating and a bit lethargic but she is on pain killers so thats why she is a bit off. All she wants to do is sook. I know how you fell when the one you love is sick and you cant help them! It breaks your heart. I agree Silverdog, if after this amount of time the vet has no idea id get a second opinion just to be sure. Couldnt hurt (well maybe your pocket ) Isabella's de sexing and snip and tuck for her vulva, anti biotics, pain killers, pre surgery bloods, the bucket and various other things ive just clocked up to the $900 mark. Least we love them Jak and Rhi others would leave them entire and wouldnt care because "its too expensive" Bet they would be the first ones to scream if their bitch got pregnant! Well here sending positive thought for you and Jak... Im sure everything wil; be ok ;) Probably just feeling a bit misserable from the anaesthetic still or somehting simple. Isabella sends Jak her sympathy too Edited because i forgot to say.. NAAAAAAAW Jak is sooooooooo cute!!!!!!!!
  25. Hi Benny. I would say stop the hormone therapy... Its generally not caused but a lack of hormones rather than a freak of nature as I understand it. I asked my vet about the hormones and she told me that they very very rarely work because there is not a huge cause. They think my little girl has it because she was very tiny, she was the runt of the little and also she the vet said that how, where and what lineage has something to go with it too. If she was an younger dog when she was speyed then chances are it wouldnt have made a difference if she were older. From the time i found out she had it at 10 weeks nothing changed accept the skin fold got fatter and made it look worse... to my knowledge if age didnt fix it, the hormones wont either. Its so hard to always put ointment on. I have been using filterbak. Its anti bacterial and a barier cream. Give that a go see if it helps. Funny you say your girl is a submissive urinator because my girl was too as a little baby. Its a hard thing to go through with you girl because they get so distressed. Now i wish ids taken before and after shots for people. Ill kep everyone posted
