  1. is there anyhirng I can give him to help him caugh it up? I might give him today to get it out and if he is still caughing this afternoon then I book him in.... Poor baby
  2. Rico my retriever loves grass he eats it al the time. But just recently the grass has turned to seed and my hubby and I ahve been trying to remove it and now its come up all through our lawn. I saw Rico go to eat some yesterday afternoon and now over night his been doing this deep hacking caugh then making motion to vomit.... I dont know whether to be worried or not. He's not in any distress and is still eating but every 4/5 hours he does this caugh then tries to clear his throat. Should I leave it for a couple of days or get him seen today? What ever it is is not within sight... By boy let me open his mouth wide and I cant see anything there. The main reason i think it is possibly grass seed stuck in his throat is because about a week and a half ago he ate grass and a massive pod of green grass seeds got tuck on the inside of his lip and I had to pull it out... Its definately not kennel caugh... I know what that sounds like but im worried about the implecations if it is a grass seed... Im assuming it would mean anaesthetic to get it out what ever it is and Rico took days to recover from anaesthetic 18months ago when he was castrated at 18mths. Im just worried all round.
  3. The problem lies in trying to do a long clip that looks good through fur that is matting... Unless you go through the whole dog and dematt first its nearly impossible to get a glide comg through and leave a fair bit of length. Brushing unfortunately is the best solution... You will find getting a dog from a shelter that when you put some good quality food in their bellies that their fur will thicken up because they are getting better nutrition... That can also cause the dog to blow some of the dead and dieing coat from before... depending on age he might be going through a age change coat... He looks like a golden retriever poodle cross or a lab poodle cross at a stretch a bearder cross... Either way when a dog gets wet you need to blow dry and brush when the coat is long. If you dont friction and more debris will cause more matting to form. There is nothing wrong with having a dog sleep outtside. With a kennel he'll have great warmth considering he'd been sleeping on a cement cage outtside befoer you got him form the pound anyway. If you are really conserned about him getting cold but he is matting up do the best you can to decrease the matting... wait till the warmer months then have him clipped off getting under the matts... It will be much kinder than a groomer having to spen hours pulling knotts out and hurting him if he gets matted all over. Its hard at this time of year becasue the warmer months seem so far away but the only other thing apart from option A: brush all the time option B; wait till spring is option C; Have him clipped down a put a coat on him until the fur grows back. My advice would be to take him into a salon that knows what they are talking about and get them to assess the condition and give you their proffesional opinion becasue we can only speculate what level the knotts are at. You can feel free to come along to my shop anytime for a chat about it I hope Ive been of some help Ashletina. edit to add: make sure that the person you speak to at the pet shop is a groomer or has extensive grooming knowledge because most places just sell what they stock and dont nessesarily know what they are talking about.
  4. that one would have been then one i recomended they are pretty good! but either wy you'll still have grooming ahead of you even after taking it off. but good luck
  5. looks like friction hair loss to me.. where the buckle or even just the collar has been rubbing and its rubbed the bald patch. Ive seen it before in cleints of mine. Does you dog wear a collar often and what kind of collar is it?
  6. Cavandra in Adelaide its not that simple. Ive approached 3 seperate clinics about titre testing because i didnt want to vaccinate but go to obedience where they have to be vaccinated. Got the same responce that titre doesnt test anitbody levels. It tests if you dog has a diseaase. Im not kidding thats what 3 vets at 3 different clinics told me! I told them they were wrong and the best quote i got was around $200 for the test. Its just not catching on yet here is Adelaide. Anyone who can find a vet that does it here would be great to know!
  7. Very well said. Was going to say the same thing. I have a grooming salon where i sell high quality kibble and unless someone asks me about barf I dont bother for the same reason as mentined by Crisovar.. People will glaze over on the simplest task let alone trying to balance a diet with raw food. Ill start this paragraph by stating I AM a fan of BARF and feed mine a half and half diet. But everyone who says about "well what would your dog eat if it were wild" seem to not realise the reality of the dogs that we own as pets. Aside from obvious coat restrictions that would cause they to become matted and incopasitated but most breeds are so far removed from wild instinct that they would starve before they figured out that not only would they have to catch their prey but kill it too. Then there is the worms and parasites that they would get from eating certain parts that even barf feeders probably wouldnt feed to their dogs becasue of the risk of parasite. Again im not saying BARF is bad becasue i think its great but what it comes doen to is that most breeds kept as pets probably couldnt survive in the wild anymore. Not saying ALL breeds but most that the general population own. flame suit on ;)
  8. Rayvk, personally id do a bit of both. Ive got a few mixed that look like yours and they get a bit of thining and clipping. The only time your going to run into problems wiht clipping is if you shave into her undercoat. Sometimes and I repeat sometimes it makes it fluffier but something alot of people have to remamber that with cross breeds not all of them have the same coat designs as purebreds. from what ive seen more crosses have a terrible time with the heat depending on the cross where are the purebred of the crosses cope better. But getting a mars coat king you can thin out the undercoat which will help and if your dog is getting into the burrs and bindis then get a pair of thining scissors and scissor off a bit of length from around the areas that she is getting prickles caught in her. That is if you want to keep the scuffy look. Ive got a few that i gt asked to clip off and their coats have never grown back badly or differently. Where in Adelaide are you anyway? Might be able to get you a good price of a mars and scissors if you wanted... The otherthing thing is that in your OP you said you cant really afford a groomer atm. I charge $50 for a dog like yours which is less than it will cost you just for the mars coat king and that providing you get the right sized one first go. If you like pm me and id be mor that happy to help.
  9. How did you find out about my secret stash of mummy and daddy valium lol
  10. I cant wait... we love our wheatens!!!! Putting Archie (Incorrect coat) into a semi breed clip tomorrow. His mum doesnt want him in a full breed clip she loves his long ears. But thats her choice. He was such a naught puppy when he was little so was another regular wheaten when he was a puppy... So dont worry we'll be prepared!
  11. Oh no... not knotts in such an elegant dog Dont stress too much wiht the mobile people unfortunately you dont tend to get what you pay for. Not saying all mobile are like it but most are. The idevidual operators that have done the training are good but he others suck and certainly dont know how to handle each breeds coat indevidually and specially. Wheaten coats do knot up very easily unless a flat nossle is use and brushed a bit while drying then a finishing brush to get any excess drying tangles out. A really good grooming spray can be usefully to help keep the coat sleek and knott free and then it doesnt go on the skin and make him more itchy if thats why he has medicated shampoo. Get into the knots ASAP because once the knotts get in there they get worse quick. Just on a side note but Curly1 Grooming a dog weather its a wash and dry or a full clip should always include a full and thorough brush and unless matted and excessive time needs to be spent dematting(then you should charge for the brushing). It should ALWAYS be part and parcell of washing a drying a dog. Any groomer not prepared to brush a wash and dry thoroughly should re asses their methods and ideals of grooming. Not saying YOU are one of these people as you said your not but it shouldnt be suggested that to get a normal brush done in a wash and dry should cost extra. JMO
  12. The club I go too makes you show them an updated vaccination every year when you re jion. If it goes out of date then you cant renew member ship until you get them re vaccinated. and they DO NOT accept tittre testing at all!!!!! which annoys me because i dont want t vaccinate every year but have to for obedience!
  13. that sucks Hannahpug! What a cow! I dont know anyone who is already trained finishing groomer. If I hear of anyone ill pm you here. sorry to hear thats so rude!
  14. Hi I own a salon in Adelaide and find it so hard to get half reasonable staff. Once I get a good one i try my darndest to keep them. Best thing is to put up an add at tafe not speciffically the grooning courses because i dont think they are worth the paper they are printed on and maybe put an add up in your window for your clients I have tried a client out as a staff memeber and they were great before they moved interstate. Thats the only advice I can give because i find it hard too. Sorry! Where abouts is your salon because i had someone in today asking for a change in career. Ediot to add. Dory its sad the number of places that are like that! Thats why it pays as a salon to have an open door policy to clients so they can see how you handle other clients. Sorry you had such a bad run in because it can be such a great industry.
  15. Can you move to Adelaide please! I think I need you at my shop! lol
  16. We dont cage the dogs at my salon but we also run doggy daycare. I have 2 disclosure statements one for grooming one for daycare to guard against me being suide if fido runs around and slips and hurts himself. I aslo have 4 staff on at all time so the dogs are never left unattended. We also have an outside run (where we put large unsocial dogs that cant be trusted) we have 2 areas in the washroom side so we can separate off the oldies from the youngies. We have a line of crates on the bigger side with cushions inthem and they are left open for dogs that just find it a little too much then they can walk into a crate and curl up and then in the grooming and showroom side we have 2 holding areas again. Again with a line of crates and cages. So if someone doesnt want their dog socialising they dont have to and im happy to crate them but otherwise they all play together. We found it makes dogs excited to come because they are going to play but thats us. Its been working very well for us for the last 5 years. Just another perspective.
  17. I love rescue remedy and emergency essence. Diiferent strokes for different folks. One will work better for you dog that another but I know I can get both at a fwe chemists in Adelaide.
  18. Hey! Dogs do get conjunctivitis but id say its hust him getting more dust in his eyes than usual. If it continues for more than a week not looking normal tghen get him cheched out by a vet and as for his penis boys will be boys and sometimes they grt a little yellow and sticky there but its nothing to worry about. again only worry if he trains to go to the toilet or excesivly licks. He's such a stunner im sure he's getting big now!
