Is it safe to give my dog Comfortis chewable tablets? Comfortis chewable tablets have been demonstrated to be safe in pure and mixed breeds of healthy dogs when used according to label directions. Safety was established in puppies 14 weeks of age and older and adult dogs in both laboratory studies and clinical field studies. You should discuss the use of Comfortis chewable tablets with your veterinarian prior to use if your dog has a history of epilepsy (seizures). Is it safe to give my breeding dogs Comfortis chewable tablets? Use with caution in breeding females. You should discuss the use of Comfortis chewable tablets with your veterinarian prior to use in breeding females. Safe use of Comfortis chewable tablets in male dogs intended for breeding has not been evaluated. What side effects might occur with Comfortis chewable tablets? Like all medications, sometimes side effects may occur. In some cases, dogs vomited after receiving Comfortis chewable tablets. If vomiting occurs within an hour of administration, redose with another full dose. During clinical studies, no severe or prolonged vomiting occurred. Additional adverse reactions observed in the clinical studies were decreased appetite, lethargy or decreased activity, diarrhea, cough, increased thirst, vocalization, increased appetite, redness of the skin, hyperactivity and excessive salivation. These reactions were regarded as mild and did not result in any dog being removed from the studies. Since the introduction of Comfortis, additional side effects reported are incoordination, itching, trembling and seizures.

Firstly Advantix, advocate and advantage are not "Chemicals" as such. They were derived from the human edible crop divisions that use the same active ingredient of the Advantage family range - Imidicloprid. This product is used on food crops that you and I EAT. It is safe and has an extremely wide safety margin. It is absorbed into the Lipid layer of skin (on animals) and is absorbed into the whole edible areas on crops. it is not like your Active ingredients of other products ie Frontline sentinel, interceptor ect that use chemically derived actives. Re worming: Advocate is used monthly and has the active Imidicloprid and an additional additive of moxidectin which separates upon application and goes to the differing organs that are affected by the myriad or worms that animals are afflicted by. The major difference and UNIQUE properties of advocate as opposed to other preps are: Advocate kills and evacuates worms, hatchlings and larvae that have accumulated and then PROTECTS against getting ANY new worms as opposed to ALL other worming preps that just evacuate accumulated worms. ie NO PROTECTION. This unique property of Advocate is called "steady state" whereby the plasma holds a level of protection that DOES NOT ALLOW WORMS to enter, migrate or procreate at any time. the worms are killed immediately upon coming to the treated animal AT ALL TIMES. Compliance of use (CONTINUITY) is extremely important for complete protection against getting any new worms or new fleas or new ticks. Use monthly (or fortnighly) to maintain Steady state. Advantix is the ONLY registered product available that not only KILLS but REPELS all biting insects ie ticks fleas flies mosquitos horse flies ect ect etc. Sarcoptic mange mites and demodex are not immuno deficient nor auto immune related issues. The are parasites and advocate treats and PROTECTS the animal from reinfestations. Re Permoxin. This is a PERMETHRIN and as such is TOXIC to cats. It must never be applied to cats and should NEVER be sprayed on dogs that live with cats as the direct contact may lead to serious issues for the cat including death. CATS cannot metabolize Permethrins. With regard to ADVANTIX it has Imidicloprid and the additive of Permethrin. It should NEVER be applied to cats - HOWEVER at the time of APPLICATION ONLY you need to separate the dog and cat for approx 6 hours until the actives have spread throughout the lipid layer of the dogs skin. From this time forward there is ABSOLUTELY no issue of a cat and dog together. The can lick cuddle sleep ect till their little heart is content. The Advantage range of products is unique in that Imidicloprid kills parasites on contact within 1 - 3 minutes 100% efficacy for the full 1 month. All other products including frontline, comfortis, sentinel ect ect ect require the flea, tick mossie ect to BITE TO GET A DOSE of their actives from the bloodstream of the dog/cat because their active ingredients cross through and remain in the bloodstreams. Also Parasites cannot become "immune" to Imidicloprid like they do to the other products ie fipronil (frontline) ect. Permoxin has a low efficacy hence the requirement to apply frequently. Imidicloprid kills on contact so where ever your pet lays or goes it is killing parasites environmentally too. Oh and one more thing, You may still see fleas or ticks on your pet (that is wearing advantage family products) at any time, HOWEVER, those fleas will be in the process of dying and will appear slow and partly paralysed. The will be dead within 1 - 5 minutes of coming into contact with a protected pet. The are immediatly paralysed so cannot bite your pet but will die off. The new fleas in the environment will jump on your pet but will be killed on contact with either a hair shaft or skin that is wearing the product. The fleas cycle is only 5 % of the environment are live adult fleas, 50% are larvae the rest eggs and hatchlings. Advantage family kills live, and larval. Fleas need a blood feed to be able to lay eggs. eggs do not cause animals greif, LARVAE hatches to become Adult fleas HENCE killing adult fleas and larvae will acheive a flea free environment. It is waterfast and does not leave greasy marks. Apply to a dry dog and do not bath for at least 2-3 days after application. Safe on pregnant and lactating bitches and Advantage can be used from newborn age also suited for rabbits and ferrets Advantix from 7 weeks and Advocate from 7 weeks of age too. Advocate for Ferrets. Re advocate not doing tapeworm - If you dont have fleas you dont get tapeworm. hence you dont need to tapeworm your dogs when using advocate. Hope this helps

Can Permoxin Be Used On Dogs If You Have Cats?
nowstarin replied to Lily123's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Thanks for this info! Re: the advantix as I bought it and then was going to get rid of it as I have cats. So just to clarify, if I put the advantix on her in the morning before work then she is outside seperated from the cats all day while I'm gone (about 10 hours) then there should be no issues when she comes in contact with them again that night? They don't lick or play with her but they do sleep on the same surfaces etc. The reason I ask is when I put it on her it was still greasy on her back for about two days and I was stressing out about the cats. It didn't dry like I found other products have in the past? That is correct. and separation like that is perfect. When applying it, you can place it in 3 areas along the backline for faster distribution and part the hair if possible. Re the greasy, this is not common for advantix, however the active ingredients would have passed through to the lipid layer long before the 2 days it appeared still shiny. try brushing the area after say 8 hours. -

Stevies Mumma No need to Switch you just continue to use advocate and then apply Advantix (at the same time) every 2 weeks for Paralysis tick protection. You are then covered for everything. The 2 products are designed to be used together. NOTE daily searching for ticks is still recommended in high tick prone areas.
-
From what I can see in the pic it may be? You can use advocate if you have used sentinel. but only continue to use the advocate, not both, from this point forward. Advocate does not do tapeworm, however you do not need to worm for tapeworm when you do not have fleas, as tapeworm comes from fleas. By using advocate you have no fleas, hence no requirement for tapeworming.

Symptoms seem to indicate demodectic mange mite. this is easily treated by using Advocate. A bespectacled appearance is typical. Applying cream using does more harm than good actually feeding the mite (burrowed deep in the hair follicles). Apply topically monthly. You will see an immediate response and hair growth should be apparent within approx 7 days.
-
And for any biting insects you should immediatly apply advantix. It is the only registered product that kills AND MORE IMPORTANTLY repels flies (of all descriptions including horse flies ect) mozzies fleas ticks (all types) lice and horse flies, ect ect. It has an immediate affect, and works 100% for 1 month. DOG USE ONLY Do not apply to cats. (safe for dogs and cats that live together though. Separate at time of application). Great for use on dogs that have fly bitten ears too. It is gentle on itchy dogs and very safe.

Instead of using an elizabethan or the like How about you spray some cetrigen (purple spray) on the wound. It deters licking or chewing by a foul taste and is an antibiotic and fly repellent. it works wonderful sprayed on bandages too. Ensure it is applied outdoors and is dry before re-entering indoor areas ( Stains purple when wet). Will shampoo off when required. Even the most frantic lickers or chewers are deterred by this and No discomfort of a collar.

Sounds to me like a combination of perhaps Sarcoptic mange mite, a possible reaction to the acid in Pineapple juice or a persistent flea problem. i would be dosing them with Advocate. This is the only product with 100% efficacy and the ONLY treatment that kills fleas on contact (all others require the flea to bite to get a dose) It also kills the fleas in your environment. It treats sarcoptic and demodectic mange mites. You shoul see instant (within 1 hour) releif after external application. the other problem could be mosquito bites. Use advantix (applied at the same time as Advocate) this kills AND REPELS flies, biting flies, mosquotos, fleas, ticks (including paralysis) and lice among many other things. Both are safe to use on Pregnant and lactating bitches and puppies. Good luck

Has Proban Been Withdrawn From Sale?
nowstarin replied to dee lee's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
It has officially been withdrawn from sale and manufacture since August 2011. Due to toxicity issues. It has ceased registration in australia. -
sAnd also that it has a strong warning for concurrent use with Ivermectin. IE can be fatal for dogs on ivermectin or some heartworm treatments /injections. It only does adult flea. Does not help larvae or any of the other stages of flea or environmental fleas. Does not do ticks. Does not do Immature intestinal worms and has a very low efficacy for all parasites. Also not safe to use for any breeding stock Male or female and unsafe for young puppies. Very high side effect % for vomiting on administration. Better to use Advocate.
-
Biggest problem I know of with Advantix is that it can be lethal to cats. I'd not recommend it for any dog/cat households - if the cat brushes against the dog or licks it, it can be bye bye kitty. ONLY AT THE TIME OF APPLICATION. Separate cat and dog at the time of application for approx 4 - 6 hours After that time the product is perfectly safe for cats living with dogs wearing Advantix. They can curl up together lick groom cuddle ect With no risk at all. The product cannot be applied to the cat. Cats cannot metabolize Permethrins whatsoever. Once the product is dry on the dog and safely in the lipid layer of skin there is no risk to cats at all.
-
No problems changing over at Any time. Even before the collars lifespan has ended. They can be swapped over on the same day if required for continual coverage. Cheers.

Just read this thread and thought I should let you know that it is Preventic that should NOT BE USED WITH OTHER TREATMENTS and Kiltix is fine to use with all other treatments. Kiltix has a unique active ingredient that is safe for concurrent use ie with spot ons. Preventic active is Amitraz and it has issue with conflicting with some topical treatments. The major differences between Kiltix and Preventic are as follows: Kiltix active ingredient is Flumethrin. It kills and REPELS fleas and ALL TICKS including paralysis ticks. It kills and repels for up to 5 MONTHS for fleas and ticks and aids in control of paralysis ticks for 6 weeks. Kiltix has a PROVEN and registered 92 % efficacy. (efficiency) right throughout the full 6 weeks for paralysis ticks and 5 months for all other ticks and fleas. The mode of distribution is via natural movement of the dog ie. eating, drinking huffing and puffing and movements. It takes 24 hours to distribute throughout 100% of the dog, It is a NON SMELLING slow release powder base impregnated collar, Fully adjustable for all sizes including very small dogs and very large dogs, It is suited for puppies from 3 months of age It is safe on Pregnant and lactating bitches . May be safely combined with other parasite products. Very wide safety margins. Is water resistant (it is recommended that collar be removed for swimming and replaced when dog is dry REMEMBER IT THEN TAKES 24 hours to redistribute throughout entire dog. Preventic: Active ingredient Amitraz. Does not repel. Kills only. Does nothing for fleas. only ticks. Has only a 62% efficacy rate (efficiency) and tests prove efficacy drops at end of life span dramatically and collar takes 48 hours to distribute . Cannot be used on Pregnant or lactating bitches or puppies under 4 months of age. Cannot be used in conjunction with other parasite products. (Active ingredients conflicts). Has a distinct odour. Same water resistant details. NEITHER COLLAR IS SUITABLE FOR CATS. It is recommended that daily searching for ticks be conducted. Kiltix used with Advantix gives proven better kill and repellency for paralysis ticks than any other available products. THERE IS NO PARALYSIS tick prevention that offers 100% cover. Repellency is by far more important along with the kill effect and for that reason Advantix and Kiltix offers higher protection for your dog when it comes to Paralysis ticks. Hope this helps, Note also that products like Permoxin do not offer residual effects (ie dont cover after use) just kills attached ticks.

For Mites you should use ADVOCATE. You can use this with (apply at the same time) ADVANTIX for the tick control. With regard to cats and dogs with advantix. The dog and cat should be separated at the time of application ONLY> when the product has dried on the dog (approx 2 hours) they can then be together with absolutely no ill effects whatsoever. The product ingredients ie in advantix are (Imidicloprid which is suited for cats) and Permethrin (which is UNSUITABLE FOR APPLICATION TO CATS). Cats cannot metabolize permethrins at all. Cats living with dogs wearing advantix are safe and millions of them do worldwide. Once the product is disseminated throughout the dogs coat (it remains hidden in the lipid layer of skin) it is safe for cats living with dogs with NO ILL EFFECTS on the cat. Advantage is for fleas and Lice. Advocate is for Fleas, Heartworm, Intestinal Worms, (all stages incl larval stages and hatchlings) Ear mites, lice etc and unlike all other wormers available this one kills accumulated worms then PROTECTS against getting any new worms, sarcoptic mange mites, demodectic mange mites, Advantix does Paralysis ticks, ticks, fleas, flies, mosquitoes, Stable flies, biting insects, sand flies, ect and is the ONLY PRODUCT WITH A REGISTERED CLAIM FOR KILLING AND MORE IMPORTANTLY REPELLING ALL OF THESE Parasites. It also has the highest efficacy rates of 100% for everything except paralysis ticks being 98%. Frontline sits at just 57% efficacy. The safety margins in these products is very wide and it is safe to use 2 products at the same time. it is not overkill. There would be no point using advantage with the advocate or advantix though because it has the same base ingredient of imidicloprid that all the a family products have. for more info go to www.bayeranimal.com.au and search Product information and technical data sheets.

I'd suggest trying them on Comfortis. It's worked brilliantly for my two and the fleas disappeared within a day. It's not until now (just over a month later because I forgot their dose) that I've had flea issues again. And because it's a tablet there's no having to play "guess the weather" every 10 minutes as it's been so unpredictable in my area lately. And that's my main issue with spot ons -- the need to keep the animal dry for 48 hours after it's been administered. How do you tell dogs who love to run around in the rain "sorry guys, you can't get wet for two days"? Comfortis only does adult fleas and has vomiting side effects and serious warnings for animals that have had ever had seizures, and it not suited for concurrent use with ivermectin. It doesnt do anything with eggs or environmental fleas or larvae. Advantix, Advocate and Advantage are completly waterfast. The animal must ONLY BE DRY AT THE TIME OF APPLICATION. Once applied, within 1 hour the treatment is safely in the lipid layer of skin which is waterfast. they can go swimming, and go out in the rain with no detrimental affect to the products efficacy for the full one month. You may bath the dog, preferably after 72 hours of treatment, and preferably with a soap free shampoo. There is no point using a flea shampoo. Advantage, advocate and advantix are 100% effective for fleas ect for the full one month and 98% for paralysis ticks (fortnightly). Daily checking for paralysis ticks is highly recommended. When fleas jump on the dog (treated with these products) they are killed within 3 - 5 minutes and are killed by contact with the hair or skin and do not get a chance to bite the dog. You may see fleas on a treated dog at any time BUT these fleas are in the processes of dying and will be paralysed almost immediatly. With Frontline, Comfortis, Sentinel, ect ect ect the fleas still bite your animal to receive a dose as these products cross over to the bloodstream of your pet. the A Family products are in the lipid layer of skin and kill on contact before the flea bites. If your pets are scratching still I would recommend you use advocate, this treats (among many other things) Demodex and sarcoptic mange mites and could be the cause of your dogs scratching. Advocate does intestinal worms, heartworm, fleas, demodex, sarcoptics, ear mites ect ect ect. Advantix does flies, mozzies, fleas, ticks and paralysis ticks, etc. and is perfectly safe to use on dogs (not suited for use on cats) and in households where cats reside with dogs. You must separate the dog and the cat at the time of application to the dog for approx 4 hours while the product disseminates throughout the lipid layer of skin on the dog But then the cat is perfectly safe to live with the dog wearing advantix. It can cuddle lick and kiss the dog till its heart is content SAFELY. Cats cannot metabolize PERMETHRINS. and as such no permethrin products are suited for cats.
