An excellent food with lots of good stuff in it is Ziwipeak - it's about $28 a kilo bag, but no grains in it and I have never had a dog turn it down. I use it as treats instead of food but for a wee dog like yours, she wouldn't eat much.

Meeting A Butcher - Perth People Rejoice!

So true! My local butcher are wonderful for human food but not for doggy food. I even had one of the guys there ask if he could come and cook my beef strips once! -

Ah, OK, it's not the butcher I was thinking of then. I'll have to go google Morris Place now! -
How cute to have a love struck or lovesick Goldie! Cue Donny Osmond: "And they called it Puppy Looooove.....but I guess they'll never know......." I think the food issue will resolve itself soon enough but the lesson from your camping trip is your Goldie would LOVE a friend! I can tell you from experience there's little difference between one Goldie and two Goldies  Go on, you'd make your boy VERY happy!

She looks absolutely adorable! I can see why she'd be the light of your life! My first dog came from a shelter and they told me he was about 5. We came to realise he was more likely 8 or 9 years old. I do wonder if they don't age them younger so they have a better chance at homing the dog ANyway, for the spondylosis, I'd recommend some fish oil capsules as they are a natural anti inflammatory, and also some Glucosamine with Chondroitin (I use Nature's Way brand, 1500mg). You might have to start with just one fish oil cap per day until you can make sure it's not affecting her digestive system, and if she manages that, I'd increase it to 1 cap twice a day. These sorts of treatments often take a few weeks to show best effect so don't expect miracles overnight. Re the vomitting and hairloss - your vet is best to try and work out what is going on there. Have you checked that she's not eating any plants or weeds outside? Considering she appeared happy and healthy when you first got her, and these illnesses have appeared since then, it makes one wonder if she is having a reaction to something in her new home, whether it be a chemical (eg something you wash the floor with) or something in the garden she has access to. I hope you get it all sorted anyway. SHe's one lucky dog to find such a good owner!

Meeting A Butcher - Perth People Rejoice!

I think it's actually inside the smaller shopping centre on Ellen Stirling Boulevard, next to the larger Innaloo Shopping centre. I'm not sure of the street name between the 2 shopping centres, maybe that's Morris? -
Hi benretriever Welcome to DOL! Some people find the BARF diet confusing or feel it's a lot of work (for me it's the latter) but would still like to feed as natural a diet as possible to their dogs. I'm a Goldie lover too and because they love their food and have a tendancy to put on weight easily, I find a diet with less grains and more raw food works well. I do feed dry food when I forget to take something out of the freezer, currently it's the last of the Orijen and I won't buy more due to the cat food fiasco. I have used Coprice in the past which was great - it's Australian made with Australian grown rice - rice being a low allergen food which is something to consider with all Goldens. I'll order more when the current food runs out. However, the main diet for my dogs (including a little Terrier) is a Prey Model diet which consists of raw meat and raw meaty bones. If you search 'Prey Model' in the Health section here, you'll come up with a few threads. I add in some sardines, yoghurt and raw eggs each week, as well as table scraps. My dogs thrive ETA - it's the cheapest way to feed a dog too!!

Oooh, I work at Ossie Pk, so that would be really handy for me - but I'm not familiar with the shops, it's not the little shopping centre next to the big one is it? The butcher next to IGA? -
Hallucinations Aftr Surgery

Oh my!!! You actually do rather well then to have to deal with all that. Glad you found this board, as sad as your stories are so far, they are educational and interesting. -
Hallucinations Aftr Surgery

Hi Goldens Is English your first language or do you just type too quickly and not proof read? You post is really hard to read! Anyway, my big Goldie boy had 2 major ops within 6 months. After the first one, he was on Methadone for pain relief - it didn't give him much relief and he hallucinated a lot. The second op, I asked for a different analgesia which was more effective as far as pain goes, and he didn't hallucinate anywhere near as much. Just like humans, different drugs will have different effects on our dogs. The stronger the drug, the more likely they are to have side effects such as hallucinations. -
Mince sounds like a good idea to me! Yoghurt and sardines too! No bones for a week or so if she has to have a tooth removed. She might have a stitch that needs to heal.

My favourite breed and I have lost a couple as well. to you

I could only give you my opinion which won't help you in this case but what I would suggest you do is put the question to Dr Jean Dodds who is an American vet and also an authority on vaccinations amongst other things. You usually get a prompt response from her. There's a few Dolers here who have her email details - First Time Puppy Owner is the first one that comes to mind.

Meat Left In Car All Weekend
Golden Rules replied to ruthless's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Yep, same here. My dogs have cast iron stomachs which I know only through experience -
Great to see an update for Beau! So glad he is doing so well now, he has been through such a lot. Re the food, Coprice is Australian made and made with Australian rice but not sure if you are avoiding just wheat, corn etc or rice as well. Big Goldie hug to Beau!

OUCH! Yes, I would imagine so I have dealt with many hotspots. If you get them quick enough, you can stop them from becoming so bad that they need vet treatment. I have used lots of things in the past including Curash Powder but the most effective thing I have found was Living Nature Manuka Oil and Honey Antiseptic Gel which is now produced as Rescue Gel from HERE. I have seen a hotspot disappear overnight after using this stuff and can't recommend it highly enough. You can use it for all sorts of things, not just the dog It's also good to work out why your dog might get hotspots - whether it's because they haven't been dried off enough after a swim or a bath, or if a reaction to something in the food they eat (grains are known to increase the incidence of hotspots in some breeds).

A good way to get your dog to drink a little more is to put some honey in the drinking water

Constant Twitch And Poor Appetite
Golden Rules replied to Lujen's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Gee, poor wee pup has been through quite a bit in his short life so far. It does indeed sound like a neurological problem. I would be asking for a referral to a specialist if your vet can't give you any answers. Good luck. -
One relieved Mum this morning ? She looks a wee honey and quite content with her toys!

You know you can always call the Balcatta Vet Hospital or Murdoch and ask them if you are really worried. I have done this previously when Dougal had his first cruciate op and the pain relief was nowhere near enough for him. Balcatta were busy with an emergency at the time so I hung up on them and called Murdoch - and their advice was invaluable at the time.
-
You're a good Mum Peigirl! I've never had a girl desexed before so I can't help with experience (my turn is coming up) but if it were me and the vet said it's normal and it should be gone by morning.......I'd just be patient and not worry unnecessarily until then.

Scarlet's Ear Driving Her Nuts
Golden Rules replied to iltby's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Head shaking is more often than not a sign of an ear infection, for whatever the reason, be it a grass seed or anything else. You still need to take the dog to a vet to be looked at. -

Itchy Dog Advice. I Need Some Help Please.
Golden Rules replied to Clyde's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
For an allergic reaction to just one flea bite, I would be using an antihistamine for when this happens as it should give her relief from itching, and the reaction should be lessened. Phenergan is a strong antihistamine but I doubt she would be on this long term? I know it makes them sleepy as well sometimes. Also, have you thought of a more bland diet of chicken, veges and rice? There are other low allergen foods as well you could consider rather than the Hills cans. The only thing I would say for certainty is that you need to try one thing at a time so you can work out what works and what doesn't so if you have the Hills canned, use that for a few weeks before changing to something else. What about dry food soaked in water?
