Any chance he can have a bit of a run later in the evening so he wears himself out a bit more before bedtime? I suspect if it's been going on for so many years, it's an anxiety thing and it may be so hard to pinpoint whatever is actually triggering his anxiety at that time of the morning. What is he like when his lab friend comes to stay?

Run a cake of soap over the dog's nail in the meantime - it may stop the bleeding until the blood clots. I think other's have used potato starch or cornflour or something as a filler also so maybe try that if the soap doesn't work?

No that's not true at all. Things must have changed. There are many pet insurance3 companies out there and there have been many discussions here rgarding pet insurance - if you do a search, you will find rather an awful lot of threads to read but lots of useful info.
