  1. It is always a good idea to ask on here for a rough estimate price range for the breed in question, then you know if the price is reasonable or not. You also need to know what health testing to expect to done for the breed concerned.
  2. Puppies do not gain weight at the same rate every day so who is biggest and smallest can change a lot. With puppies that birth weight, if it is a large litter I would expect them to gain 50-70gms approx per day at this age, when measured over several days. If there are only 2-3 puppies they can easily gain 100gms a day but with more competition for the milk bar the gains will be less. What condition is your girl in? If she is losing weight then she needs more food to keep her own weight up and produce enough milk. Feed more meat, puppy kibble and milk substitutes like Divetelact, Goat's Milk or Biolac with Nutrigel in it like a milkshake. If she is holding her weight and eating lots already then you are feeding enough. Hungry puppies cry so if they are sleepy and content they are getting enough. If not start a milk substitute now. At 12 days they should be able to stand and see to learn to lap from a dish. It is always a good idea to hold back the bigger puppies to let smaller ones get a head start with feeding, if you have a range of sizes.
  3. But did she have fun?   Good luck cleaning that up. I have known quite a few Border Collies who would do that given half a chance. Those types of beds are only for the non destructive dogs and only when they can be kept away from those who cannot be trusted. I once had a visiting BC "kill" 22 plants in pots in the space of about an hour. My dogs at the time had never shown any interest in them.
  4. My dogs always pee on the grass in front of the vets, due to all the doggy smells before we go in, so I leave the dog in the car, go into the vets and ask for a kidney dish, get the dog out of the car and make sure I am quick positioning the dish as they squat or lift their leg. It has never failed, saves hours chasing them around at home and I don't even need to supply my own container. :D
  5. You cannot stop a dog from wanting to attack small animals but some other commands that are handy to teach are STOP and LEAVE. Stop as in "freeze where you are" - I use this in emergencies to get the dogs attention before grabbing them or recalling. One of mine who had a very good recall (but regularly ate skinks in our yard) learnt this well and I was able to stop her chasing a hare in the park and running into a brown snake ahead of her in the same park. Leave is taught so they will drop whatever in is their mouth. This is particularly handy if they pick up take away chicken scraps so you can stop them from swallowing them. I know some of the people on here have been a bit harsh but you really had to expect that after saying what you did.
  6. My vet recommends C3 and only KC for dogs going to kennels or ones that haven't been out much that are suddenly going near a lot of dogs. She figures the regular/trial show dogs have a lot of natural immunity to KC from often being exposed to it.
  7. 12 weeks is the start of the fear period so I wouldn't leave it until then. Most breeders I know send them at 8-10 weeks.
  8. Borders tend to not have problems often so you can get lulled into a false sense of security. My vet did her PHD on puppy mortality and I am one of the few people to have read the entire thesis. One of the most important conclusions she came to was to always be prepared to go in on the due date with a caesar if there is any suspicion of trouble, rather than leaving it too late, to give the highest survival rate for puppies and dams. She ultrasounds on the due date if nothing has happened and will either get the puppies out then or book the bitch in for the next morning depending on heartbeats, etc. The practice does a lot of caesars but they are nearly always for live puppies rather than risk them dying before they get in there.
  9. The one I was talking about is where they attach electrodes to the acupuncture needles that are placed as normal but they have an electric impulse sent through them like that of a TENS machine.
  10. Are there any previous puppy buyers you have kept in touch with that might like to take him? I know a breeder that has successfully rehomed a few older dogs with people who have already bought a puppy from her previously.
  11. I never truly bond with mine until they are around about 6 months or so. Up until then they are "the puppy" and it is almost as if I am minding them for someone else. Until then I could probably rehome them if I had to but after that they become part of the family and are here for good. I have also had two truly special males who bonded more to me than all the others. My current BC is a close third behind the other two.
  12. While his gut is recovering you could try scrambled eggs if he can tolerate them. They are usually easy to digest and help with the coat. Leave all the oil type products until his digestion is normal again.
  13. If this girl is not a maiden she should wake up and mother as normal. If she is a maiden it will take longer for her to work out what these weird little creatures are and were they came from so you are going to need to act as mum. Try to get them to feed while she is still drowsy to get the colostrum but you may have to supplement for a few days if her milk doesn't come in properly soon. If she isn't feeding them properly within about 48 hours and seems to have no milk, you might have to find a foster mum. You were very lucky that it wasn't a caesar for a dead litter and that you didn't lose the mum as well. For future reference for anyone reading this - if there is no sign of labour by the due date then get an ultrasound to find out what is going on. Do not wait it out for a day or two or it can end in disaster.
  14. In my experience natural matings always give a better chance of larger numbers than an AI. Maybe do both. If she had an unplanned mating she would probably have ten. Also when you desex her you may find that one horn of her uterus is abnormal. That happened with a bitch I bred many years ago who only had small litters. The litters were small because she was only carrying them in one horn.
  15. I know someone who's house burnt down due to one of the plug in air fresheners. Luckily she wasn't hame and the dogs were not in the house at the time but she lost everything. The firfighters told her that it was a common cause of house fires so I wouldn't use them if you paid me.
  16. When was she due? If she was due Saturday I would have had her to the vet well before this for an x-ray or ultrasound in case there is one puppy left dead or alive. Borders do not go over their due date of 63 days from ovulation without something being wrong so it is important to know before hand, by ultrasound or x-ray, the approx number of puppies due and if they don't arrive by the due date then get a caesar. For the future, the only way to be sure what is going on is to prog test first to make sure she ovulates and do repeated ultrasounds during the pregnancy to see if she is absorbing them. If she is, try a sire from a different line as the one you are using may not be genetically compatible.
  17. I have had it done on me but have only had the normal acupuncture done on the dogs. It does hurt a bit so wimpy dogs wouldn't cope but it does seem to work better in some circumstances.
  18. The only cases of so called "vaccinosis" I have ever heard of in Border Collies, turned out to be TNS puppies that were never going to survive anyway so the fact they became ill after the vaccine was irrelevant.
  19. Several of the prominent BC show breeders use Advance and seem very happy with it. A couple use Nutrience but I don't know anyone who uses Optimum. As a general rule Borders like variety and do well on a mixture of foods. The breed was never kept in kennels but lived with the farmer's family and ate whatever they did. So while delicate digestion can happen it is not common in the breed.
  20. I believe it is constructive to advise her that what she is looking for does not exist to save her looking any further. The dog world is a very small place and all the reputable breeders know about each other, so I can assure her that she will not find a repuatable breeder of BCs that would supply a puppy as requested. So if she wants a healthy BC she will have to compromise on something.
  21. Stick to the Hills short term then gradually change to something else. Black Hawk is the only dry I can feed to my current Border and is the only one my Jap Spitz will eat as well. Most of my friends with Borders use Black Hawk or Advance with a substantial amount of raw added. The basic rule with puppies and dry food is to buy in small quantities and if the food doesn't suit change it. Every dog is different, they grow at different rates and some do better on one food than another. Many do well on anything, others are more sensitive or need a different balance of nutrients to grow correctly. Good luck with the puppy and I hope you have also checked the DNA status of the parents for CL, TNS and CEA as well as their hip and elbow scores. These are the minimum health test requirements for Borders.
  22. The other consideration with chilled is how far is the stud dog owner from where the dog will be collected and is it possible for them to get there in the morning for the semen to make it onto a flight.
  23. The bottom line is that is against state law and ANKC regulations to sell an unvaccinated puppy, so no reputable breeder who also health tests will sell an unvaccinated puppy. It is also a requirement to join a dog club and compete in trials that the dog has to be vaccinated so there would be no point in getting a BC you couldn't do anything with.
  24. 8 weeks so that they have had the crucial time with mum and litter mates but then they need to bond to me be trained exactly how I want them trained. Toilet training is so much easier at 8 weeks and it is easier to get them into a routine. I wouldn't buy a puppy that had already been desexed so that is never going to be an issue.
  25. Check your spelling on the survey first. The first thing that stood out to me is that dogs don't "malt", they "moult" and it makes the survey look very unprofessional.
