  1. what a wonderful save ... well done, and love the pics :)
  2. What bones are you feeding/meaning Puppybella? Bones high in marrow can cause this problem as marrow has a very high fat content. Marrow is found within the bone cavity, and it is basically fat.
  3. Attention all South Australian exhibitors attending Casterton/Portland shows 13-14 November. SACA have made an error in the journal schedule advert with the order of the groups for all 3 shows. The groups are in the following order. 1 & 2, 4 & 3, 6 & 5, 7 & not as printed. (VCA Gazette is correct). Feel free to cross post and let any one know that you think this may effect.. thank you Juliet O'Meara
  4. Please cross post to other groups you may know of so we can get the word out (ozshow & ozcollies have been posted on) Mrs L Harris will not be judging at the Portland /Casterton kennel club shows on 13th/14th November due to ill health. Her groups for the weekend are now to be judged by Mr William Mooney (Victoria) Please pass on to any one you think may need this info. thanks Juliet O'Meara

  6. hi all .... please read this thread in dog rescue http://www.dolforums.com.au/index.php?showtopic=186353 ...... staying silent is not helping the lives that are lost ... nor those that will go after them
  7. why I used to live in a shocking Tiger snake area before, and lost dogs to them as well as saved some (both antivenine & VitC treatments). I am currently looking at my 15yo Collie (16 in April) who was bitten by a Tiger many years ago, she whelped a litter after that and never ever did I consider PTS when she was bitten. The only ones I lost were those that I found too late due to not being home at the time of the bite. Ptolomy, from my own experience .. having the dog on a drip, antivenine and VitC all work wonders. The timing of being able to administer these treatments is imperative. Once the heart is affected by the venom then you have a huge battle which will most likely not be won. Thats the only time I have PTS a snake envenomated dog Recouperation will not be fast. Keeping the dog quiet for weeks/months after the bite is important. Kidney function most likely will be affected, as was the case with my old girl. She has had intermittent kidney issues since the bite, but nothing life threatening. The kidneys take a real beating from having to fight the venom effects. Hope your friends dog is okay

    Benjamin Bunny

RIP Benjamin Bunny Hugs to you Nat, he was a special little fellow.
  11. Thanks ... will ask my friend to look into CS then - definately wont hurt anyway
  12. Thanks Curlyking ... you say you havent had a hot spot since using CS? So do you keep your dogs on a dose of it all the time then for prevention?
  13. Morgan .. you mention that CS is great for hot spots? Do you put it directly on the hot spot or give it orally? I have a friend with a dog who suffers from hot spots so will suggest they look into CS.
  14. Thanks for that ILoveFlatCoats. She is comfortable at the moment, and we have only had a couple of bad breathing moments for whatever reason. I keep her quiet which seems to be working well sofar. As you said at 12 she isnt all that active now anyway, so we are watching her weight too. The summer is what is worrying me, we dont have airconditioning here so that will be a worry. I have a cooler so that will be getting a workout on the warm days I think. She would cope with surgery, but I dont want to put her through that at the moment if I can help it. She had surgery a couple of months back for a cyst and the pre op tests (bloods) showed she was fit & healthy, heart is strong & lungs are clear. That was when they discovered the LP because I kept saying to them she sometimes sounds like she is having a severe asthma attack, but whenever I took her in to the vet she didnt do it. So whilst she was under they did an exploratory. I was a nervous wreck then, thinking she was going to have a breathing attack whilst under & I didnt even know what the problem was
  15. thanks curlygirl, will do fastgals .. no - no mention of surgery from my vet, they just told me to keep her "quiet" & see how she goes ;) Does this condition deteriorate? They never told me that thanks for sharing your experience with Girlie .. am pleased you got some extra time with her
  16. My old girl (12 years old) was diagnosed with this condition not long ago Was wondering if anyone her has had experience with this condition? Is there any treatment (other than surgery) we could try? And tips on how to manage it? Has anyone had a dog undergo the surgery? Was it successful? thanks
  17. I am so sorry Varicool & neorotic Thank you for caring for and loving these guys. RIP Sadie & Misty
  18. Yes the beef bone would have triggered the attack. Marrow (from the centre of the bone) is very concentrated & fatty. I had a dog who could not have any marrow type bones - even scooping the marrow out was not enough to prevent an attack. He was on the human treatment for pancreatitis for a while (Viocase I think it was) - I managed to get him off that eventually & with a no fat diet he was fine.
  19. So sorry After 16 years Peppers loss would leave a huge hole in your heart ... but her memory will live on .. Treasure those Memories
  20. Vets are still not uptodate & it totally amazes me & frustrates me .... only found out a couple of days ago about a 6 month old Collie Rough pup being given the Heartworm Injection. Vet said it was safe coz it was just Ivermectin that Collies were affected by Luckily pup is ok ... otherwise vet would be in all sorts of ** now.
  21. Moxidectin & Ivermectin are very close relatives, many others too - as fido666 posted. It is a mutant gene which leaves some dogs susceptible to undesirable & possibly fatal effects from certain drugs (not only "mectin" drugs). These dogs do not have the MDR1 gene that produces the protein P-glycoprotein (P-gp). When P-gp is present & functional the drug cannot remain in the brain – but when it is absent the drug penetrates the brain & stays there setting in motion the circumstances for toxic reaction. Because the required gene (MDR1) is not there to “block” these drugs from entering the brain blood flow this then sets off a chain reaction of central nervous system dysfunction. Severely affected dogs can lapse into coma and death, usually due to respiratory arrest. Not just Collies affected either. And Ivermectin & Moxidectin are designed to absorb into the body fat of the subject. It is also designed to last for approx 1 month ..... not something I am prepared to put into any of my dogs (regardless of breed) in any dosage.
  22. This website might help you in identifying the snake cgs_surfin Australian Venomous Creatures (Uni of Melb) It is a great page with lots of info on all venomous creatures including pics & locality they are generally found. I heard about the naphelene flakes too & sprinkled some around on Friday - hopefully they do work as we get lots of Tiger snakes & Copperheads here. Lost 2 dogs to the one Tiger just before Christmas good luck - hope you have no more slithery vistors.
  23. Oh Jacq I am so sorry to hear of Blues passing. Please pass on my sympathy to Joanne & Shirley on their loss. RIP dear boy. My girls certainly were escorted in style to the Bridge ... with Kayes boy Tambo & also Blue. Such a sad week all round
