It's so much fun isn't it doing collections and AI's with BIG dogs! 3 people is best, one to hold the bitch's head, one to control the dog and one to get the collection. Then put the dog out, get one to hold the bitch's head, one to hold the bitch's bottom still and one to do the AI. Get a longer insemination tube before you do the next one Lynai....you want puppies after all the effort!

Anyone do them in W.A.?

How you bring the dog up is important to, exersize and diet is important. You can pm me if you need any advise

Well, if i got a 3/3 on elbows and the hips were a 30-40 and the dog was a shocker, the dog would be a pet! I really couldn't give you an exact number for sure, you have to look at the overall dog itself. I would definitely be hesitant with 3/3's on the elbows. Anything over 20 on the hips also wary of, but wouldn't discount it. There is so much to consider with hip and elbow scoring and there no guarantee with breeding. I've got a bitch with an elbow score of 2/2 and hips 3/4, i am not completely happy with the elbows but i paired her with a dog (my own) who has an elbow score of 0/0 and hips are 4/5. I'll see what he next generation brings. I do want to see low scores, but also want good type an temperament. So i wouldn't discount using a dog or buying a puppy from dogs who have higher than average scores if they have the type, tempermant.

Ultimately, you would want a score of 0's all round, hips and elbows all O's because that is the best you can get, but reality is it just doesn't happen all that often. Everything goes hand in hand, type, temperament and health. I don't believe all the value should be placed on what the dog has scored on the hips and elbows. It should be a consideration and if the dog has scored higher than average and is worthy of breeding (great type and temperament) it should be paired with a lower scoring dog, which most breeders that test do.

I put the microchip numbers down for my last litter registration and didn't have to pay extra, so i don't see why they would add that on once it becomes compulsory?
-
Oh yes, i remember the litter, good luck showing her, i hope to see her out and about. Do you have any other Mastiffs? Where are you looking at getting your next puppy from?
-
That's great, good for you! Where is your girl from? All the best out there, are you in the city? We come down occassionally, but wont be down for a while yet.

Fluffies do crop up from time to time. There is a DNA test now so that breeders can pair up their dogs accordigly so that the fluffy gene is avoided or can be bred it out. It's not liked because it is not in the standard, they are supposed to be short haired. There is nothing wrong with a fluffy, but if one or more are born in a litter usually the breeder will put them in pet homes, i don't know of anyone that would put them down just because of the fluffy coat, but i suppose it could happen. The Australian Mastiff is a sad thing, they do look just like something you could pick up from the pound! Your brindle girl looks nice, do share more info and pics, you can post in the Mastiff thread in the Breed Sub Forum

What about info on why to breed a purebred registered dog? Does anyone have any write ups they'd like to share?

Robert Mcdowells sells a Fertility Mix - Canine - Stud Dog Also ICSB sells a product CF-Plus Supplement Which i used for my Mastiff male. (Each chewable tablet contains: Perna Mussel 300mg, Brewers Yeast 100mg and Alfalfa 100mg. 1 tablet is given for every 15 pds of body weight.) Zinc is supposed to be good and so is good quality read meat. Has he been on any AB's? Maybe the heat has taken it's toll, it has cooled down alot now, might help.

Sway i totally agree! Find all the free advertising sites you can and put an add up! Trading post you have to pay, but i had some good enquiries from there, Gumtree is free, Petlink is free....it can't hurt! There are LOTS of puppy sites out there to advertise on. The Quokka is free to advertise in, call them and place an advert, lots of people buy that paper here in W.A.

I have heard of them being scanned and showing nothing at an early date but going on to have puppies. Can you feel any movement? You should be able to feel puppies moving around by now. They can and do often have phantom pregnancies though!
-
Annette is good, i sent frozen over to be used and 7 puppies were produced
-
What was the time frame between vaccinating - and dying from Parvo? So sorry to hear this.
-
By sharing your bad experience with this breeding we are all learning so thanks for bringing it to the board to discuss. I hope with your next litter you are armed with more knowledge than before and i hope the bitch carries the litter to term and is delivered on time by an experienced Vet who will listen to you!
-
It absolutely amazes me how Vets can have different opinions on when the bitches are supposedly due to whelp!! Sway, that is a great example of when to calculate their actual due date. A friend of mine just used frozen from my dog on their bitch, the vet told him she was due 63 days from the implant....which is 65 days from ovulation!! The pups were born by c-section 63 days after ovulation, 61 days from implant, perfectly healthy. If he had of waited and gone by the vets advice it might not have gone that way. Mastini, was that day 60 from the actual implant??

Sorry to hear this, i've bumped a thread for you that i started. After looking into it more i definitely think it's worth checking the levels through out their pregnancies, better to be safe than sorry.

Bumping thread for someone
-
Hahaha, thought you might post here, a BIG congrats! and no probs, i really enjoyed playing midwife
-
That's a good point with the Pyo.
-
I think even though it takes a few days to get results have the blood taken and sent off to get the levels anyway, you may have time to supplement if needed and also if she does end up losing them all at the very least you 'may know' if that was the reason for it. It takes 24hrs to get results back here, it is quite hard to make things work when it's like that!

I would get her progesterone levels checked. Hopefully she holds onto those puppies! Do read the thread i started and the link within it that someone else posted
