Or maybe the second bit? My experience and therefore (irrational) reaction to a breed? Suppose no one on here would avoid a certain breed based on previous experience? Same thing..... I was once told - what you do with your Rottie reflects back on the breed, how true. When I was young, I was bitten on the arm by a Collie rough but it didn't stop me owning one years later for 14.5 years but unlike you I didn't blame the breed or have a fear of them for the rest of my life. I bet you have a large photo of Hugh Wirthless on your wall don't you, another person who hates the breed.

Is this not your post tollersowned ? ;) as you say you've only had bad experiences with Rotties so you blame the whole breed, is this not BSL. It's people like you who would give any breed a bad name. :p ;) ;) Your whole post is a stupid comment, on a breed you know nothing about.

Owning a Rottie is not easy, especially with people who are so scared of them they wet themselves at the sight of one These people who know nothing about Rotties and are the first to say ban them. You can tell them all day long what the Rottweiler is really like, but it's like talking to a brick wall as these people hate them because their fear rules them and with some of the stupid comments from Mum to Emma and Tollersowned I see BSL is alive and well here on DOL. Anyone who has done obedience training with the Rottie club can get their Rottie to sit, drop, heal, stay etc. without even touching the dog, so much for them being uncontrollable. I wonder how many of the people who rubbish our wonderful breed can do the same.
-
Mum to Emma, The Rottie is a large powerful dog, but the fact is this breed is one of the most loyal, gentle and loving breeds especially with kids. I have a small Rottie about 38kgs, but she is very strong much stronger than my GSDs. She is an ex-cruelty case and the only problem I had with her was undoing what had been done to her. Why do you say they are uncontrollable, I have never found this to be true and if you go along to your local Rottie training club you will be shocked to see large Rotties being walked with ease by women. You never see Irresponsible owners or people who buy Rotties for the wrong reasons at Rottie training do you. Irresponsible owners are the problem with all breeds not just the Rottie, but it's the Rottie that the Media and these so called dog experts claim is this vicious, uncontrollable devil dog. I'm not having a go at you, as you clearly know nothing about this beautiful breed, so please don't judge the breed by the actions of a few fools.

Don't we just love pollies who think they're dog experts I doubt Barbara Perry even knows what a Rottie looks like. Blame the breeds and Sydney's west and throw in a few stats too, but don't let the facts get in the way. 69 attacts out of how many staffys and Rotties in NSW, what a bloody joke Pollies and BSL is.

I'm so so sorry for you, poor Pru and so young. RIP Pru.

cjm, I'm so sorry for you and I hope pru recovers, she looks beautiful.

Hi Kamuzz, As you may know we are told to keep our GSD's at the correct weight to avoid hip problems, so IMO I would not place a backpack on mine as I believe this might ad to the risk. Both mine are 5yrs old and have good hips, my girl Tara is very Hyper and will be all her life but obedience training slows her a little. Ask Karen Hedburg I'm sure she will be able to help you.

Just when you think you've heard it all spitting in a dog's mouth - what a load of crap and no wonder some people have trouble with their dogs.

What a beautiful boy he was, Im so sorry for you. RIP Kaden. I know how you feel, we lost our beautiful brown Dobe girl nearly 4 years ago and we still miss her. Time does heal the pain.

Hi Daggles, My GSD boy Rex was an itchy boy, it started about 2yrs ago he is now 5yrs old and I have tried everything. The vets don't know what causes it and it's not a breed thing, my other GSD Tara is not affected in any way. I too have changed his food, treats and washed him in several med. washes over many months but nothing helped except for a vet drug called Prednil. He is on one tab per day, which is a low dose and theres no more itch. Allergies are a real pain and it's a life long thing, theres no cure I'm told so management is the answer. He had a skin scrape which showed nothing and why it took 3yrs to develope is anyones guess. As all dogs are different you might find something that works for you, but Prednil was the only thing that worked for Rex anyway good luck.

I too am so sorry for your loss Choppa. Far too young RIP Choppa

Hi Joanne76, Yes I can, the Rottweiler Club of NSW. I know what your thinking, I don't own a Rottie. It doesn't matter, all dogs are welcome and you don't have to be a member either. I take my GSD as well as my Rottie. It's close to you also, It's at the Bill Spilstead Complex for Canine Affairs Luddenham road Erskine Park. The next training night is tuesday February 12th from 7.00 to 8.30 pm. we start at about 7.30 pm. It's a fun night the Instructors are friendly and very helpful, especially with problem dogs like my Rottie (cruelty). The people who go are very friendly too, bring your dog and if you have kids bring them too. Afterall It's about socialization for dogs and people. I hope to see you there. -
How To Help A Dog Afraid Of People?
tarope replied to lovemesideways's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Hi Jen Martin, Firstly I must say I'm no dog expert or trainer, but 3yrs ago I was in the very same position with a 16mth old Rottie we adopted from a shelter. This poor girl had been bashed, starved and chained for the first 14mths of her life. She had never walked on a lead, been in a house or car before. She was very scared of me, any sudden hand or arm movements she'd hit the ground. Pick up a stick, kick a ball near her she would run for her life and if I went to pat her she would drop her head and turn away. I didn't have a computer then and had never had a cruelty case or a Rottie either, but I did have two GSD's who were raised correctly by me and were such a big help in Opal our Rottie's recovery. Opal saw how they reacted with me and slowly over time with plenty of pats, hugs and treats she slowly came around but it took 6mths before she lost most of her fear. When this happened I noticed a big change in her, Opal would playbite if I tickled her she would come when called and seeing my GSD's jump in and out of the car she did the same. She even started protecting us, something I never expected. I walked her around the yard with collar and lead then slowly introduced a check chain. I would take her in the car and for short walks then to the pet barn where she saw people and other dogs, then 14mths ago she started obedience training with the Rottweiler Club. I received excellent advice and help from the club and I've learnt a little about Rotties too. As fearful as Opal was, never at any time did she try to bite me, which says something for this wonderful breed. Opal will never be 100% because of what has been done to her and I don't think they forget but they do learn to trust and love again, I know this is true because I have the proof. Anyway hope some of this has helped you, good luck. :D -
Myszka, The reason you didn't learn anything at Rottie training is because you wouldn't listen to the instructor, when you were told to control your dog. Has nothing to do with you having a Dobe, don't knock Rottie training when it was your fault. I wonder if you would be saying the same thing if the Dobermann club had obedience training ?
-
Tonymc, Have you ever been to breed club training, or any Obedience club ? I think not, it must do something because mine don't pull. Any way who's talking about a bloody horse. If deelee has been given such good advice as you put it, how come the dog still pulls ?. Your comments on head collars and breed club training are rubbish, and I've never seen a horse at dog training either. Maybe you should go to obedience training, you may learn something, I should also mention just in case you didn't know take a dog with you it helps.
-
Hi deelee2, Have you asked Staffie people what they do, as every breed is different. I have two GSD's and a Rottie all have been to breed club obedience training and what a difference it made. When my GSD bitch started pulling at 4mths she was fitted with a head collar which she didn't like and one month later pulling stopped. You must be shown how to use a head collar correctly, you can't use it like a check chain. I hope you have been shown the correct way to use a check chain, otherwise it becomes a choke chain. Your trainer doesn't seem to be doing much good, maybe it's time to try an obedience club you'll be surprised how helpful they can be. Good luck.
-
Deelee, I don't come into the training thread and I haven't read all the posts, so what kind of dog do you have ? How long have you been trying to stop your dog pulling on the lead ? This problem should have been corrected at obedience training, I know it takes time especially with some dogs that are very stubborn but in the end they all walk nicely.

JeffnCel, We had a beautiful brown Dobe for over 10yrs, she was exactly the same if you left her alone for just half an hour she would rip everything up in the house. She slept in our room all her life, towards the end of her life when she started to wet herself I put her in the spare room at night and she screamed and cried all night. She also ripped her bed up as well, so she was put back in our room. I think it's a Dobe thing as other breeds I have owned never had this problem, but I could be wrong. She was not the only dog but she missed us so much. Such is the love this breed has for their family, she's been gone for over 4yrs now and we still miss her very much. Enjoy your Dobe as long as you can.

Meal Suggestions For A Very Fussy Gsd Pls
tarope replied to kyeesha's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
My German Shepherds eat everything put in front of them, have never had this problem. My Shepherd Bitch even comes and tells us when it's time to be fed, she can tell the time. -
Hi Wiley and welcome to DOL, I know how you feel, my Rottie has an Allergy problem she's had for over two years. It's a contact allergy to grass, in between her paws becomes red and itchy, so she licks and bites till they become very sore. Sometimes she gets a rash from her chest down, after laying on grass the good news is it can be controled the bad news is there's no cure. I know it's not food or mites, fleas or inhaled have had some test all clear. have tried Anti-Histamines, don't work on her. Have tried Macralone, Prednisolne and Anti-Biotics Cephalexin, work for a while then she's bitting, scratching, and licking again. Just back from the vet today with a drug called Prednil, she's had before - had to up the dose and more Anti-biotics. My GSD scratches and bites his toes sometimes, but no need for tabs, my GSD bitch is not effected at all. We have owned 6 Breeds over the years and never had Allergies, vet says it's an Individual thing and not a Breed. I looked on the Internet for allergies in Dogs, it's a world wide problem. As we can't keep her off the grass, tabs are the only way to go, good luck.
