  1. All I can think of when I think military flip is doing a backflip, with I would assume is an inappropriate manouvre for a dog. I am curious though...what is a military flip?
  2. We get a lot of toads at night where I live. We taught Gracie 'leave' and to be honest she has no interest in them. The other day (well a when it was still warm and toady) I was outside with her while she went to the loo and she rushed up to the toad, had a good squiz about a metre away. And then just left it alone. Despite being quite confident that she won't touch them, we do not allow our dogs access to the back yard at night, unless they are with us, especially in summer. I do worry about my pup. I have taught her the same commend with everything I don't want her to touch, but she is rather zealous in her nature and seems to have quite a high prey drive so it seems, so I will be extra vigilant with her. I also won't let the dogs out during spring/summer during the day, unless I am there. (Snakes). Lucky for them, we spend a lot of time outside in the warmer months so they don't miss out! EFS and to add that toads can KILL.
  3. Hi CTD, That webpage was great, thank you! It described it kind of like what I was doing, we just obvious need more work and I need to persevere with it! I had a good old laugh at Tia in that vid when she was waving the other way LOL! :D
  4. Thanks Cassie! I'm off to try it lol, I let you know how that goes!! Makes sense, I think it is easier if you can encourage them to naturally perform a task and they must think, 'well that was great, I didn't have to do much for that treat' Lol. Oh and by the way, when I say 100 reps, I don't mean in one session!! I mean collectively about 100. :D EFS
  5. Hi all, This may seem to be a rather trivial thing for me to post about, but I tell you what it has got me stumped. I have been trying teach Abby to shake hands, but she just doesn't get it (or doesn't want too :D ). I have been trying since she was roughly 12 weeks old. She is a clever dog and does know stuff like sit, stay, stand, drop etc. Not to an advance level or anything, but quite well at this point (she is only young). I know she is clever, but she is also quite stubborn. I'm still at that stage that I am trying to learn what makes her tick and what her learning style is. This is what I do. I say 'shake' and gently lift her paw and I will give her a treat and praise praise praise. That's just to start off with, to show her what to do. I know that repitition helps, but it's kind of been 100 reps by now. I figure I must be doing something wrong. When I say shake, she just looks at me blanky. It was very easy to teach our staffy to shake, I feel that it is easier when they are naturally touchy feely. (When she was a pup, she would automatically put her paw up at us, so we would say 'shake' and praise her, she picked it up almost straight away! What am I doing wrong? I am obviously not going to attempt any other tricks until we have this one down pat. Cheers Em ETA Lol is it kind of embarassing that I haven't been able to teach 'shake' yet?
  6. Wow that it is a neat trick! I would never have thought to use sticky tape lol. Oh well, we have yet to master shake or hi5 at the moment so I'll concentrate on them Lol.
  7. May I ask what the name is of the tapeworm medication. Dad's dog went in for her yearly injection the other day and was given a tapeworm tablet, but he can't remember the name of it. She is on Advocate for heartworm and worms, and so is Abby and I was wondering about the tapeworm tablet. (Only just stopped giving her the Drontal as a puppy which covered all intestinal worms).
  8. Thanks for the links ML . That is so interesting. Amazing things that our bodies can do! Dru...all I can say is Ouch!!!
  9. Yes, apparently that is quite common, but I have never experienced that either. I find that pretty interesting too...why would we synchronise like that? What messages does our body give to others' bodies, that tell them that we are menstruating, even though they don't consciously know? Sorry OT.
  10. Wow, that is interesting! It's as if they have been virtually untouched from what they were originally. That is amazing. And although I am no expert, I bet that it is the strange weather (climate change) that has caused those bitches to come in late! You kind of have to sit back and take note when your dogs have that kind of history of coming into season at the same time. Wow. Thanks Curlytail.
  11. Wow! Why is that? Is that just the way they are genetically programmed?
  12. RIP Cilla Hugs to you Ellz :D Cilla sounds like such a character and very well loved.
  13. Congratulation Leopuppy - you must be so proud!
  14. I just have to say, as a staffy owner....that I can understand where you are coming from. You can't get past the wiggly bum can you? Yep, they are clowns and don't give the impression that they can do anything but be a clown. Of course it is always good to be pleasantly surprised! :D
  15. I don't think Rom was trying to say that people aren't allowed an opinion. I think what he is saying is that people shouldn't jump to conclusion and be so ready to judge about a certain method or training style. I would say that it is hurtful to be called cruel by people who are just not interested in approaching a topic with an open mind. I think approaching all topics with an open mind is a great idea. Doesn't mean you have to agree at all, just means that you aren't completely blinded by your beliefs and resort to slinging matches and nasty comments when you become extra passionate. Discussion is great IMO, but hateful comments are not. ETA - if you go in with an open mind, you might learn something. Even if you don't agree, you can still say that you approached something new with an open mind.
  16. She is beautiful Shoey! RIP Maz
  17. Pheww! I'm glad my two are not alone in their preferences... ... I am always thinking why are my dogs so bloody weird. :D
  18. It weird you know, my girls have the occasional cooked meal...but they prefer the raw. They smell raw meat and they go a bit strange. :D Don't get me wrong they luuurve any food, but raw is especially delicious to them apparentely.
  19. Hey I wondered this also. First ever long haired dog in the family see. I could not bring myself to ask, I was going to ask the vet or the groomers. :D I was honestly worried if I did the area might get dirty. I thought it might have been a protective bit of hair. I'll do like PF said and leave a little bit, but the looongness of it really irks me! This is seriously the most educational thread I have ever read in my whole time on DOL. :D
  20. Ok I know I said before mine are feed twice a day, but now like you Samoyed Man, my pup is not too fussed on her morning meal. Ravenous at any other time, but disinterested in the first meal. THere you go, I may have to modify her set meal and see how she goes on one! ETA - she just started in about the last week to do this:confused:
  21. My two adore their sardines! Twice a week they get them and I put it in their dry food.
  22. Mine are fed twice daily. They seem to do better on it and this sounds silly, but I don't like the thought of one meal a day, purely and simply because it seems like a long time to go without food. Mind you if I had to implement a special diet that needed food to be served once daily, I'm sure I would cope lol.
  23. PW Sorry I have no real suggestions except Aloveen (I've been using it that long!) :p But I just wanted to add that I didn't think you good use human shampoo on dogs - something about the different Ph levels. Possibly different chemicals too, I'm not sure. But I don't really know what's in Dermaveen, so I wouldn't know exactly, but I'd be looking in to it first. Someone else might know though.
  24. No wonder Bailey is so shiney Weimlover! Keesha is a cutie too! :p
  25. I know I get mine at my Vet's but I do think you can get it at some pet supply stores too.
