  1. Hi Erny That happens especially when loose dogs come racing over to you and then you can do little to stop that If my dog saw another dog and went into i desperately need to play with this dog i and you dont exsist i i would first get rid of the other dog body block chase it off whatever as there is no point trying to get your dogs attaention back while the other dog is trying to jump on its head lol As soon as the dog is heading off to its owner then i also have a big switch on word that means funn will rain from the sky if you play with me run off and get puppys attention back on me have a game and remind myself to be more aware of the surroundings next time. Its hard when you use public places you cant control all the stimuli i find it harder as my eyes get worse to see whats in the area so now i use the fenced oval lock myself in and then the only other dogs i have to worry about are ones i have arranged to be there.. hope that healps
  2. they have them at a couple of the clubs down here and i have heard they work really well
  3. Highe energy exercises i guess that depends on what you mean i like using both keeps the dog up and excited i like my dogs to work really animated and working from behind its easier to get using prey than food i like really fast go outs i can get that with food but tend to find throwing food can get lost in the grass whereas a toy is easier to use being lazy i love the results i can get with a prey item i can get them with food but prey i think gives a more energetic picture He has a good fast dumbell retrieve at home that needs to be woked on when out and drop on recall i like my dogs to hit the ground fast from a run not this half dawdling stuff you often see in the ring I happy to just use food but am also happy to put the work into getting the most out of his drives
  4. Yup i agree one thing is easier to notice than a lot of things going on at once now seeings i will be missing your workshop maybe you can give me an idea i have strong prey drive at home sees his toy goes nuts for it will tug fetch kill when out we have great food drive even under pressure but not so good prey drive should i leave the food at home and concentrate on buil;ding prey drive when out as i did with food drive until hes playing really strongly for how long woth the toy or prey item and then go onto to training with it or continue to work on building pprey drive and using food for teaching when out. As for toileting when out for the last month hes happy to do both whereever before he wouldnt which is why i asked about maturity whether that is part of the process. As i have always used both food and toys in training with my other dogs i would like to be able to continue this with him but am thinking that we should leave all training gett him pleying with his toy when out really well then get back to training
  5. Hi k9 Nerves and drive definatelty seem to be an issue for a lot of shelties i know lol they have great drive will work for a toy food etc but as soon as you take them into a new environment they shut down. connor is seven months old we have done heaps of work in this area and he will now play with a toy when out before he had nointerest at all but now he seems to be more confident about strange places yet at home hes really full on So if i keep working on his drive building will that help overcome the worry when we are training elsewhere Also how much of all this is maturity Connor has strong drives at home when out he will work in food drive not prey but is getting better as he gains more focus i tend to find hes great where there is a lot going on but not so great in quiet places with the odd dog appearing barking
  6. Hi K9 Ok so my pups seven months old has been in heaps of different environments and we train at all of them so works with varing amount of distraction when i say work i mean he is doing foundation stuff for trial work and im asking for things he knows well in these environments He has a great recall but i have kept him on a long line when i am out in the open at dog club etc just incase he did get the urge to nick off he hasnt so far the worst he did was stop to look at what a group of dogs and people were doing once because someone was yelling so should i now set up scenarios like you have said where i have a boring person that wont even look at him standing there and let him of the long line to train if he goes over they ignore him and i recall him to a good game and food then add the boring dog etc That was what i planned to do not that i think he would even bother with the person anyway then build up to more intersting people and dogs thast what i did with my last dog and i havent had issues with my dogs showing any great interest in others yb
  7. Are we atlking about programs that invole having the dog crated or penned except when working with you a lot of competition people seem to do this i know of one person whose dogs are fantastic to watch work but are kept crated ninety percent of the time Its based on the idea of hostage syndrome isnt it. Anyway i cant see the point of having a companion that is locked away
  8. Ive always said dogsshould see other people as neutral not good not bad just there and i work toard that with my dogs I do let my dogs says hi to toher dogs but only for a short persiod on lead long enough to realise they arent a threst but short enough that the interaction is pretty blasaise I hear people complain about there dogs being well behaved till hey see a certain bred becasuse they have a dog park friend of tat breed dogs leaving the trial ring to say hi to a familiar dog etccoming when clled except when theres a whatever breed about etc or hassling people for food pats because they have allowed poeple to feed their dogs. My dogs have a ball they play with me we play fetc and chase and rough house with a tug toy they are happy and having fun and by the time they are adults have no real interest in other dogs Having said that they do get to play with other dogs they have each other and my sisters two to play with in our yard or their yard but we also do a lot of work training together so they ignore each other when out and its more fun to be with me i have all the best toys and treats anyway I guess it is a personal thing
  9. LOL Yes our two are definately good at that it would have to be a team sport one dodger and one swatter
  10. wish i was but als im not but hope you guys all do well that go yb
  11. Lol hehe i dunno i think it mught be the other way round connor spotted you from a mile away today and was soo happy to see your dog. dont worry by the time i actually get around to trialling you'll be in ud yb
  12. Congratulations to both of you sparty and dogdayz for your efforts you did well. Trialling can be one of those things and even the best can come unstuc sometimes. You guys aremaking me jealous i cant wait to get out with my bot and be part of the trial scene again yb
  13. You can go straight into novice without ccd yb I dot know where teh proposed changes are on the net
  14. Little aths starters pirtols peple cheering fast movement things been throw you can start on the outskirts and the girls love to play with puppis the boys pat but try not to look interested lol fotty games srens yelling not always cheering balls fast movement My fav is coffee shop trianing we have to places near us with outdoor seating and big undercover area just perfect for a bit of training plus people coming and going into the shoppig center or gym we get kids elderly people running bicycles and shopping trolleys we have a semi rural area nearby lots of gotsa sheep horse that are happy to come to the fence for a pat riding on the train tothe beach and back sitting up at thepark kids playing running bbqs coking lots of people want to say hello te bus stop cars going past people talking want to say hi we have a rehab centre nearby you get lots of people in wheelchairs walking frams those ride on things mostly elderly most love to stop for a chat umm thast all off the top of my head we also do the unmbrellas and stuff like thati have a huge list of things and boxes to tick when we have seen them we dont get to do everything but we tryreally hard to do as many as possible i guess thats half the reason my dogs are so easy to get ficussed we put in a lot of hard yards on the environment front I alsi take my dogs to allthose places and train there starting with simple stuff then building till we can get full trial work in everything from very high distractio to very quiet paces with just the odd thing going on. I have only one rule i dont ask for anything the dog is doing at three leveles higher at home when we go to a new place i set teh pupy up to succeed win win that way im very lucky to live in an area with all this at my figertips in walking distance
  15. what about setting a time in the chat room to discuss training topics i for one have wanted to in the past but then none of you come in or you run away as soon as i enter lol

  21. Novice The dog to promptly respond to the Handlers Command ‘Down’ given from a distance. Description of Exercise: The Judge must order the Handler to take up position with the dog standing at heel. On order from the Judge, the Handler may give a command to stay and will move forward until the Judge commands the Handler to about turn and halt. The Handler will be halted approximately 3 metres from the dog. On order from the Judge, the handler will command the dog to “Down”. The dog must remain steadily in the down position until after the Judge orders ‘Return’ (Return to your Dog) where upon the Handler will return to the dog. The dog must remain in the down position until after the Judge has ordered “Exercise Finished” Principal Feature: The dog to stand where left and respond to the handler’s commands given from a distance. 22. Ok back from the morning walk with a thought on witholding food Say you had gone down on your luck and found yourself living on the streets the only meals you got were at 7pm from a mobile soup kitchen you were totally reliant on them for food now you get there everyday ten minutes early and recieve your meal your hungry by theis time of day then on day he's not there ten minutes goes by hes still hasnt come half an hour later still no food an hour has gone by the van shows up gee are you relives he asks you to do something to help sure you comply your starving havent eaten all day but how ouwl have been feeling for that hour anxious stressed Dogs are totally reliant on us for everytig they can op out and kill a bunny if they feel hungry they have to wait till we are ready to feed them its not always easy to keep a routine and sometime meals come at varying times but withold dinner to train is unfair and anyway it would only work a few times then the dog would just accept the new dinner time and your have t withold for another hour etc. I know there are plenty of flaws in this analogy but its just a thought
  23. Hi hr I treat my dogs the way i would expect to be treated with respect and kindness if i wouldnt like someone doing it too me or my kids then i wouldnt do it too my dog thast the only justification i can give thast where i draw the line In theory anyway
