Many years ago i was told by a fellow dog trainer " if you want to change the way people think about training their dogs you need to lead by example" those words have stuck with me . Several years later and here i am with a dog that has the potential to gain high scores and do well in the ring. A dog that is the essence of positive training hopeful i the handler can be as good. to gain high scores you need to develop a dogs drive food prey etc and teach the dog to push you for those things to become more intense is what will gain the reward so i have spoken to many trainers about the best ways to achieve this K9 and Lablover have been extremely helpful giving me loads of tips that i can use. Now i am being accussed of being a win at all costs person not putting the dog first why becasue i have spoken to peope from differeing backgrounds that use different equipment never at any stage have i said i am about to change the way i train these people have a lot to offere everyone if you have an open mind. I have also been accused of using people Why because i can only read a screen for a short period of time so dont bother reading threads that arent about training or developing the areas i am intersted in. I thought dog trianing lists were there to share dog training ideas and it was up to the individual whther they wantd to discuss cameras and potography especially when you are limited to your ability to read the screen. People have pushed and pushed me to trial and show peple it can be done without force when i set out to do that im accussed of using people and not being a positve trainer. To use someone you take what you can and offer nothing in return yet i have always been open and helpful and have worked with many people having problems and never asked for a cent to do this is that a user?Sadly friends have been put in the same pot even though their reasons for not being online were simple working 12 or more hours a day not even finding time to train their dog let alone get on the net Its amazing how peope take a tiny piece of a picture and then develop their own scenario, they assume you dont care if you dont jump in whenever something happens in their life. I guess rather than asking why you havent been around they just make up their own minds My family is close knit but we dotn always talk to each other things happen in our lives but we dont nvolve everyone all the time. at the moment im trying to cope with the idea of becoming blind one sister is there to support me the other is busy with a new family of her own so i dont expect her to call and coe over she has her own stuff to deal with at the moment. People cant always be an emotional sounding board for everyone else sometimes we need to take time out and look after number one if we dotn everyone suffers. for the person that feels sorry for me because im not always into chat well just remeber who was there when you were being treated badly at the clubs who backed you up invited you to train with them when others wouldnt its sad that the thankyou is to put me down as a trainer and person. Thankyou K9 Lablover Herr Rottweiler and others that havent judged me for asking questions even though we dont always see eye to eye its nice to know there are dog trainers out there that are intersted in dog training and arent insulted when thats what you want to talk about I have learnt a valuable lesson this week dont give away information for free you wont be taken seriously dont aim high in your training people will try to bring you down. Open your mind and expect to be jumped on. Treat all trainers as equals with much to offer and you'll get stabbed in the back Its sad how people wil listen to gossip and heresay without the facts they will tell everyone else whatthey think they know about you without first confronting you with their concerns first. yb

sorry that questionwasnt related to connor i saw you mention the toy on the string to someone else to get some interes and was wondering what the next step wud be with a dog that required that to get interst are you talking pivot left abouts i dont use them i prefer the military ft about where teh dog stays in heel and moves around the turn with me.. Though i do use both finishes around and flip Hes going great guns got some amazing heeling today and his right about was spot onive always felt the pivot left about is just another right about turn whereas a really well executed military left about shows the dogs abiity to maintain position on both does that make sense yb -

Hi K9 question with the toyon a string do you then go to the tieback once you have got some interest? Connor is coming along lovely did a little atthe park overtheroad did what you said heeled him from the back to the front of the house keeping him focussed i dont hink he realised we changed locations lol. am getttting some very lovey extended trotting which i have decided is now my aim to get that long strided flowing movement right through the heel pattern It looks spectacular and becasue he is so foccussed keepis him on track I have the picture of what i want in my head now to get sometips to keep me in a straight line and we'll be set -

Ok who was the judge so i can correct him nicely. You do not even have to have a hand signal it states hand and or verbal So long as the signal is smooth and singular it doesnt matter whatyou use in singular i mean not stopping half way and then continuing that woud be a double signal. The signal i think i remember you using is fine for the ring. why they would use a judge that dosnt know the rule bok for the higher classes i dont know I did offer to judge the higher classes but i think they are scared of my aliean powers lol. If your not sure of something bail me up i wont be there this week but will be bac th following week weather permittng if you like we could do a ring run through and the i can have a look at what you do i know your going back to working on stuff but you could take food and a toy in and use them to eep him motivated plus it woud give me a chane to watch his body language on the stand for exam and maybe find some things for you to watch for -

DD I dont do classes simply because one i use a lot of prey drive and tey dont like me playing in class and i tend to break off a lot to reward which they dont like. Two Im legally blind so am not comfortable in a class i walk quickly and always find people under my feet lol Plus i have no desire to watch dogs been treated wrongly when i train to th side i can block out wats going on in the classes but wehn your involved in the class you cant ignore it.. when i have tried to involve myself in the club offered to give runthroughs run a trial class help wit the problem dogs help with agility they never seem to need any help. i got told my ideas are to radical lol funny isnt it they have no problem with a certain trainer that strings her dog up by the ears and twists them if he doesnt fetch yet my toys and food throwing and having fun is too radical I also dont put in my achivements to the club and dont collect trophies for titles -

Hi HR I agree politics suck. I go for a few weeks then disappear for a while so they dont feel too familiar and start questioning the way i train lol Sad isnt it that i have to do that. DD yes you have seen first hadn the way the club is they dont like me speaking to you how quickly were you whisked away to a 'real' trainer lol. ERny so are you a memebr or an agility club we are going over to kcc this thrusday night to have a looksie. Hehe connors favorite toy makes loud pussy cat noises i think westernport would have a few things to say about that lol may have to take it nexttime i feel the urge to go to a club Oh for a place to train where people respct trainers that get results -

Yup this area is doggy capital lol Hastings never had an issue with me using toys food etc in classes they are pretty much find what the dog loves and use t. They usually takes lots of play breaks while the instructors explain things. all clubs have politics and they need to have structure to keep things moving smoothly there is always going to be people you just cant get along with whatever club you go to Where i am now everyone leaves me to do my thing they have known me for years and know i do things differently but they will come over if im talking to a memebr just in case im telling them things and abducting them or something lol.. I dont care so long as i can do things the way i need but ive been in this gme a long time so arent looking for instruction.. I think for people looking for a good class hastings is a pretty good place to start while they keep up with latest techniques and try to educate themselves they are doing well At a recent talk i went to by Debbie Calnon there were at least four instructors from the club there which i thought was an excellent turnout -

Its easy for people to say see a trainer or pay for a professional but at the end of the day they have children have been bitten and probably werent really wanting the dog to begin with. You say you know the line for having similar issues so it may have some genetic tendencies who knows without seeing the dog. I think you have given them good information and if they choose to have him put to sleep then so be it it may save a chaild losing an eye or being scarred for life. As for taking him on which i think is what you are hoping to find someone with the experience and time to work with him its a pretty big ask when there are so many wondeful dogs with great temprements needing homes. -

Is This An Ok Way To Train
yogibear replied to kelpiecuddles's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I'll give a brief outline of what i do ok dog knows how to drop so drop on recall is just an extension of drop whereever. I will throw out a piece of food and let dog get it then as soon as hes finished i ask for a drop then toss another piece gain as soon as hes finished ask for drop. because im throwing the food out he is learning that the reinforcement comes from out there so doesnt magnate toward me the i add a hand signal which is high and moving forward the pretend throw of the food this stops him i ask for drop then toss the food I also do this with a toy. Once im getting fast drops in all environment i hav ea dog that will drop solidly on cue then you ask for it when they are coming to you with the pretend throw handsignal lol and bang drop because it has already been built in I have never had a slow recall or anticipation my dogs run in fast on their recalls i want them running in fast not trotting in like a lot of dogs do. i also want a spontaneous drop even when its not formal as its very handy to be able to stop a dog in its tracks i work on the rverse too the dog is moving away from you running to a mark i will ask for drops then too forget the fact that you want it on a recall and work on wanting a spotaneous dro that works whatever the exercise is. Oh my seven month old has been doing drop in place since twelve weeks and he will do a great drop on recall and a very fast normal one too -

Its been a busy few days have got connor doing sit drop and heel for his toy with varying level of mild distraction at home so far sit has all been stuff we have already worked through in food drive anyway so the distraction had already been reduced. Now today im off to the quietpark to have a go at it there there is usually one or tw people walking their dogs and the running club will be around somewhere these things tend to distract connor and stop him wanting food so i will see what happens and report back then im off for the rest of the week so he gets a week of training then hopefully we can get on with it wthout the interruption of oh my god a dg walked past 29900 metres away and i dont like itlol -
Sounds like a normal 20 week old pup

David with a rotty does agility I used to go to Hastins Lablover1 and im sure you'll enjoy your time there its a lovely ground the training area never gets too wet and there is heaps of room so the classes are nicly spread out plus its a smaller club so the classs sizes are usually very good. There are a few people of here that go there i belive and i know the instructors do take an acive interest inlearning are going to lots of seminars and were organising a few experts to come talk to the club -
