Very good post Shadow Walker. Please Diablo dont let this thread end in a Sch debate, which has nothing to do with what the breed was bred for, its only a test isnt it and that wasnt what this thread was started for Thanks

Some great posts and very thought provoking . Certainly learnt what alot of breeds were actually bred for, very interesting.

years ago I had an Irish Setter bitch who would walk the fence line and push every paling with her head till she would find one that was loose she would do it for a few weeks then stop for a month or so then start all over again, would drive me crazy, as she did find a loose one every now and then, before I did. LOL Cheeky bugger and who says they arnt smart lol

I would like to say it is very pleasing to see this thread on page 5 and no arguments or breed bashing It really is good to see that so many people do work their dogs, as I've said before , and also, if like me they are their faithful, loving pets, then thats fine also

Show dog I think you said it all, there is no shame in the fact that some breeds have adapted to being the family pet Well not all breeds of course but dogs in some breeds. I agree wholeheartedly Gaylek, that just because they come from working lines definitely dosnt mean they will have that instinct. GSD's are protectors, Brydee has the most ferocious bark, When she hears a noise, she goes off and if she dosnt know the voice she keeps it up , but if I tell her its only me there isnt another sound. Thats what I want from her. I dont want to have to wonder if she might bite someone because she feels its her duty. I like to know that if someone came to the gate she isnt going to lunge at the fence, but bark all she wants thats fine, Me personally I wouldnt walk into a yard where a GSD is barking at me constantly , even if their tail is wagging it really is good to see so many dogs that are doing what they were bred for,

Yes I get were your coming from SD. As said a lot depends on if thats what you want from a puppy and are willing to work that way with it. I had a GSD girl that was WL,'s and she was so over the top that it was unbelievable. She never stopped, ever. I just could never keep up to how much she needed, never again would I get working lines in any Gsd's that I got, but that is my descion, and what I want from my dogs. I know some people thatb would only have them that way but they are not for everyone, I like my dogs to have quiet time at some time in the week LOL But the 2 I have now are the most loyal, protective, friendly, gentle girls I could ever ask for, but work as they were originally bred for, I dont think so, but then I'm not into that type of work, so I dont know. ETA Love the piccy SD

Ok all very interesting . Glad its not just the Gsd that gets the short end of the stick LOL Maybe we are a nation of people that just like to bring down the tall poppies LOL : Hides head : So its looking that, the breeds as they come to Australia are losing all the different courses or trials or tests , so is that because we are not used to these things in Aust or what. There seems to be the trend though dosnt it. Or is it our climate as Showdog said ?? MMM very interesting thanks for all these responses. Lovely to see that people do use their breeds for what they love to do..

Thats funny Pointees' yeah I remember my English Setter girls doing that and think Hey girls everyone can see you LOL I remember a puppy we bred years ago winning a class at the Royal with stiff comp after a bird landed in the ring, the puppy set the bird and was the only one to do it, and the judge said that he won it after he was unsure of the placing's because he was the only one who did know what to do as the others just stared at the bird LOL
-
Yep about Coolies , but are they actually registered with the Kennel control or do they just have their own registry ?? Sorry not sure about that one. Coolies are very popular up here at Taree. I think its great with the whippy's, I could just imagine how they would love it LOL
-
Yes it is very disheartening isnt it But no matter what test's are around for our breed test's you will always get people that will use bad temp dogs Yeah good points Huski, love to see the beagle airport sniffing puppies LOL
-
I think my two girls are pointees too Pointees LOL They love to hunt all the grasshoppers etc and god forbid the birds that love to annoy them by landing just near them in the trees or on the garage roof .LOL I do agree that there will be breeds such as in the gundogs etc that will always have the instincts in them for that ,as in pointing etc when they see a bird, I guess it depends what you want from your breed as well, dosnt it. Mine are a working breed, I want mine as family pets first, but I dont really want my dogs to work sheep and I'm not into obedience so does that mean I should'nt have the breed because it takes away from what the breed was bred for ?. So thats another question thrown in for the topic Thats great Gaylek that Dusty is so keen. But just proves something I guess that there is a boy like Benson that has such lines for it but isnt keen at all, but it certainly dosnt take away from him does it .

Yes I know what you are saying SD but thats I suppose where I am going with this. In Australia it is different isnt it with our climate etc.. So the WL dogs that you say are in a plenty that have good coats, that isnt in Australia or is it??
-
My personel choice is not to wear black pants with a black dog. As the dog tend's to get lost against you. Especially at night shows. If you watch at a show different breeds you will notice this. I show a GSd and try to wear lighter coloured pants. Even very dark charcoal pants or navy are good. Red and also white look lovely with a border. Just change just prior to going in and a shirt or top that is slightly dressy without being over the top looks great.I also feel a bit over the top wearing a jacket sometimes, besides that, after going round the ring in full flight I feel like I'm going to keel over LOL I have seen some people wear jeans with a dressy jacket and it looks good with some breeds so depends if you can pull that off I reckon.

Ok due to my breed the GSD no matter what topic is started, the posts always seem to end in breed bashing posts. Even from people who claim to love and own the breed. I'm wondering I suppose because other breeds dont seem to cop as much cr@p as the GSD's about WL vs SL's and how they should be SCH trained or else they arnt how Germany breeds them so therefore Aussie dogs are all unfit for the title of being a GSD. Well it has got me thinking to how many dogs still do the work that they were originally bred for?? For Example Lhasa's were originally Temple guard dogs ( I think just an eg: not a definite quote OK LOL) What about Collies werent they for sheep?? Sorry guess I should of looked up what they were originally bred for first Could they still do this or most of the them anyway.?? I know there is always the debate of WL vs SL in every breed and people will say that they should be the same but how many WL English Setters for example would you see with the amount of coat that we see on our SL's today ?? They are different in builds as well. Sorry I know again people will say they shouldnt be but they are and always will be different. And I'm definitely not saying that SL's cant work so please dont think that, I dont mean that at all. Working line Kelpies are finer than the SL's etc( or from what Ive seen dont really know if this true or not ) Ok I guess I should don a Flame suit but its a genuine question! Does your breed or could your breed still do the job it was bred for and of course does it want to ;)

Glad to hear she is on the mend. I had Jazzy my 4mths old GSD puppy in the vets 2 weeks ago with 2 ticks on her. Its Horrible to see them that way isnt it. ;) I tried to keep her quiet but in the end I had to leave her out with my other girl because she was getting more upset being away from her . She only did what she could handle but tried to keep her from running around. She took 10 days before I could say that she wasnt still weak in the back end.But now you wouldnt know she had even been unwell. Hate the bl@@dy things. ;)

:p So sorry and I know that no words can take away the pain but sending hugs your way . RIP Bindi

Strangely only last night in another thread, I was having this very discussion about weak nerved GSD's bred for show/pet purposes and the "exact" discussion that I mounted was "when it comes to the crunch, the weak nerve GSD's will run away, they won't protect you" and everyone wanted to argue about it telling me I was wrong???. It's not the breed Brooke, it's the breeding of your dog to produce weak nerved, soft temperament more socially acceptable animals free of civil aggression. My GSD would have taken the guy's arm off before he raised it, infact the guy wouldn't have been game enough to approach us once he was switched into defence drive. With a hard temperament and strong nerve dog, the training is preventing them from barking, chasing, attacking, not teaching them to react which is the difference. A GSD from a breeder perhaps a working line or a strong showline that do produce dogs capable of protection/security work would suit your requirements, but such breedings are difficult dogs to control and require training practices by professional people with experience in handling them correctly. Sorry Rex but I think not being aggressive can NOT be taken as WEAK NERVED GSD's. My dogs have all had beautiful temperments, Would they protect me if someone attacked me ? I dont know cause they dont feel threatened by people. But have never had to put them in that position, thank goodness. My old girl that I had was the softest natured dog you could ever meet. But we had a party one night and a friend was mucking around gave me a squeeze and Tash was between us and glaring him and wouldnt let him move a muscle till he moved away form me, and was there every time he came towards me, he laughed as he has GSd's but I felt safe. Another time our next door neighbour was in and out of our house Tash just sat and watched, then my husband walked across the road and as he was coming back here was the neighbour backing up saying OK OK I'm not coming in, There was no way she would of let him in without us being there, never bit anyone of course, but had that dont even think about it look Brydee well she is only 12months old but I'm sure she would just give you a cuddle
