  1. my girls at the beach this week. the viz is pointing and flushing fish!! she is 'broken' as she does not bother doing it with birdies! the spin is a 'bird' dog though Saw 8 osprey. Sorry about the quality, I don't post in photos as I am WAY out of the league, but I thought I'd share these anyway. One day I hope to improve, the camera is a canon 40D so it's entirely my fault!! I LOVE how straight her tail is (gundog people will relate )xxx
  2. Hi Jules, yes, this is why I never EVER watch animal movies!! I'm a cot case. I'm still badly scarred from Ring of Bright Water and Born Free from the 60s! Just thinking of them makes me cry.
  3. aww, Bundys Mum!! nice bit of tongue wont hurt Well, that's what I keep telling myself xxxxx Nothing like a viz kissssssss.
  4. Bury the food! This is very difficult. I've only had one cat chaser, a cattle dog we adopted at age 7, she had been an outside dog and taught to chase possums etc :D Well, at our house she was indoors and with 4 cats, so we had to do something. This may not work with a terrier breed though. We would make her sit with us, and tell her 'dont look at the cat!!!!!!!!' (hmm probably blah blah to her, but she got the tone! ) She was not allowed to interact or have any opportunity to do anything naughty, but was always in the room etc. with us and the cats. Separated at all other times, bed time, if we were not home etc. Eventually she just ignored them and after the first year would sleep and eat with them, as she did for the next 9 years ;) We had ot be very 'tough' with her, make sure she knew the 'rules', and not pussyfoot around. :p It obviously depends on the dog. but we care for a bc here about half the year, who is also a cat hater, and we have him right under control with the cats. Same thing though, never alone with them. The cats smooch all around his face and he is fine, but he's not allowed to move, we tell him stay! etc. and if he ever gets even a little excited, he has to go outside for 10 mins. So far, after 5 years of visits, nothing has ever gone wrong. with both these dogs they needed to undertand the boundaries and intros, treats would not have worked, but I'm sure with many dogs it does work. They had to know that under NO circumstances was chasing or anything else acceptable. It's can a good idea to carry this through with other stuff, re chasing birds outside etc. so they really get the idea. LEAVE is also handy. all dogs are so different that is hard to say what would be best, I do agree with the cat free, dog tied. I'm also lucky that I have cats who are very used to dogs and rule the roost,, don't put up with any crap. That really helps the most. Good luck, it IS a long process.xxxxxxx
  5. LOL :p My vizsla is an expert in getting her tongue down your throat! Poor tradesmen when they come to the house!! First she looks like she'lll rip their throat out, then when their guard is down, she slips the tongue in! I dont have any great ideas, with us, and anyone else who wants a kiss ;) we have taught her to kiss on command, jsut like any other training. still get a tonguey!! but at least I'm ready. She never licks, only tries to kiss. She will also try and get one in when you arent' looking, when you first get home etc. but we make her wait until she gets the 'kiss' command. It is embarrassing with stand for exam as she is very sneaky getting the tongue in when anyone gets in her reach she will also do it to the spinone when running along or out on a walk, she seems to do it to her for reassurance. lots of friends think I'm barking mad having her do 'kiss', but, I like it! (tragic!!)
  6. His loss 2nd this 3rd here!!! I got 'nuthin' I love the 'what breed' threads, but they also exhaust me! ;)
  7. No, agree with Lyndsay. Do they need a pup? I've had some wonderful and easy working breeds that I have had as rehomes, some as old as 7. There are many many MANY working breeds out there who need homes and are beautiful dogs, and not as 'frantic' as the 'teenage' dogs.xxxx Just because a dog is older does not mean you will not have it for years either, the shortest we had an older dog was 8 years
  8. as long as a child is taught to behave properly with a puppy, dog, cat, any animal, and taught compassion, patience and caring I don't see a problem. You are already probably up early, running around, cleaning up messes, playing games and taking walks I had a mixture of all ages of pets when my angels! were born, growing up. It was the best time of my life.
  9. I get the concentrated one, lasts forever as you only need a tiny bit. Nutralife, concentrated joint powder with optiMSM. Health food shop. We've been using it for 3 years and it's very good. Mine have different foods most meals, so it may be mixed iin an egg, yogurt, meat, sardines, etc. but you only need a little so it's not an issue.
  10. Wish I could come to my favourite little manchester's birthday. happy birthday gorgeous trixie!! where on earth did that year go! OMG! I expect to see birthday girl pics on here!! What a charmer she is, lovely! Big kiss and hug from me!xxxx :D
  11. Oh how awful. Poor Fifi, I hope she is feeling better very soon. Hope feef is not in too much pain or too frustrated. Lots of love and hugs xxxxxxx
  12. wonderful news the best thing I could have hoped for ! fabulous. Give Benson a super big hug!xxxx
  13. dianed, the temperature thing, not feeling the cold, is also another sign. so sad for you and you beautiful dog.xxxIt really sounds like nothing would have been enough MRI or not, she had a very loving owner and a great life, and really that is all we can hope for for our pets when the time comes, doesn't make it any easier though. It is normal to go over and over these things, even years later. I feel very bad for allowing my blue heeler to suffer the last day, she needed to be PTS that morning but I wanted my daughter to do it, badly, so we had to wait till late afternoon, and I still fell awful about it 2 years on :D I had her (dog) on my lap for hours, talking and stroking her and all the family sang to her and held her on her way, it was a blessing, but I was wrong to hold her for a few more hours. It was too hard for me tto let go. I will never allow myself to be that selfish again. She was 15, RIP Pindixxx
  14. Please dont feel bad about the biopsy. I've had several dogs (and cats) die of cancer (as they all have got to a great age ), and the 'downhill' phase always comes, and is always very fast. Only one needed a biopsy and it did not affect her time remaining at all, she still went on for months. This is just the way the disease works. weight loss even though eating more than ever, is very usual as the 'tumour' uses energy (simplified term). All of my cancer pets have been PTS at home. It is very sad. :D Lots and lots of hugs and love to Bensonxxxxxxxxxxxx PS, there is an experimental drug being used right now through vets that has shown excellent results. I'd be asking about it. sorry I cannot remember the name of it, but I'm sure there would be someone on Dol who would know.xxxx
  15. I'm assuming its a small breed. I do it with mums pomeranian because sometimes the little brat prince wont move and he has a grumble. Only because he doesnt want to get off his butt when told. I guess a pom is a dog the one next door (very cute) is smaller than my cats. :D
  16. get the vet to check for cancer. if he is eating heaps, and losing weight there could be (or also may not be!!xxx) a problem. I only suggest this as I have experienced it several times myself, particlarly muscle loss, not to alarm you, just to double check all avenues.xxxxx
  17. Im so sorry for everyone who has been affected, how tragic I've never even been prescribed this drug, or heard of it, so thankyou all for sharing your sad stories. The only drug my vets have ever given is previcox, and before that metacam. But always with a heap of usage directions. One of mine also has a cartrophen inj every 6 months. Is this dangerous? I only ever use the previcox if absolutley necc. maybe about once a month or even less. I'm terribly terribly sorry for your loss vernie thankyou so much for the warning.xxxxxxx
  18. Nothing to add really that has not been said by very experienced people. I agree that please move the dog another way, either by calling or luring with food/toy. I can't say I've ever moved a dog by picking it up If the dog has an issue with the girls, it would be best not to ask them to move him. I know that The Warehouse (was silly sollys once) did have crates very cheap, around $60 for a fairly large one. Good luck, keep pup and children safe xxx
  19. Hope the puppy is OK re upset tummy etc. Please see a vet for health problems, puppies can dehydrate very quickly. I wont be popular but honestly, what do people expect when getting a pup? They are very hard work, I've lived in mud for years, all mine have been big on swimming, the beach, driven the 'lawns' into dirt. part and parcel of having a dog (most) is extra housework, responsibility, hours of training, cleaning, poo, vomit, extra shopping, noise, early mornings, hairy beds, furniture, cars, money out the window on vets, toys, training, beds, food etc. Many times it also means chewed EVERYTHING. All this is very normal, which is why you are not the only one. I can't imagine not bonding because a pup makes a mess Please give pups a chance
  20. In the August issue of Marie Claire magazine, pages 214 to 215, is a two page glossy advert for My Dog. I have written to both the magazine and My Dog with my concerns. The main concerns I have are that the dog in question is mentioned as a 'beaglier' most of the ad is about what a great dog this is the person bought the dog on IMPULSE at a PET SHOP when he (Nelson) was just 8 weeks old, so obviousy left the mother a little earlier. The ad shows an attractive , fit, professional, intelligent woman (one we would all like to emulate). I am furious that a magazine who promotes itself as a voice for humane treatment of all, and a dog food company (belongs to the Mars group!! bye bye Mars!) can use an ad like this to pull at heart strings and promote all the worse things aboutt purchasing an animal. If anyone else feels like protesting the addresses are www.mydog.com.au go to contact us and there is space for comments. and [email protected] (email address) yes, I'm barking mad. But this really craps me off. ;)
  21. OMG! He is gorgeous, wow. Love them to bits. I've had wolfies, but adore deeries too. One day....................................
  22. Fantastic news. I met your dogs at a dol meet in adelaide a couple of years ago and LOVED them. Devastated when I read what was happening. Now that I'm emotionally under control I can post and say WONDERFUL , YAY, Best news, I'm so glad for you and Hudson. xxxx
  23. I'm terribly sorry Kirty. How awful. I am very very happy Champa did not bloat Do take a look at Adrians recipe in the other thread that has a link in this thread Also, I know you have said routine is out, so I'm not saying DO IT. ;) :D But I will say that there are many dogs (and children and even adults ;) ) who need routine, for many reasons. It does have a calming effect if they know what to expect and when, rather than have no idea what is coming next. We have one dog who NEEDS routine and one that couldn't care less. We definately notice a deterioration in behaviour and nerves if the routine is not adhered to. Even though we have travelled all over the country with the dogs (and cats), we have still had their 'routine'. This is also necc for us as we have a couple of diabetic cats who need to eat and be injected at certain times. My 'routine' dog would also not cope with fosters although she does cope OK with visiting animals, but fosters would 'play' with her brain I'm sure champa has boundaries, but this is especially important with gundogs (IMO). I've had 5 gundogs and found that they respond and behave much better with proper boundaries than without, whereas the sighthounds and working dogs I've had have not 'taken advantage' of any lack of boundaries. IE nothing ,even toys, laying around. They get a toy when I say so. This changed once they learnt that the toys were not available whenever. Calming exercises are also very important to prevent them going 'over the top' etc. This may have nothing to do with your dog at all, I really feel for you both. It would have been a terrible shock. Champa sounds very special, I'm sure he has no idea that he is doing the wrong thing when he does it. The only other thing I can think of is to make sure he cannot get into anything, although it sounds like this may be difficult. Our litter trays/catfood are all in one room that the dogs cannot access as the only access is a very small opening in the door for the cats. all kitchen cupboards have locks, bin is out the front where they cannot get to it etc. It appears that Champa may be the type to rip a door off its hinges though ;) a friend of mine has no back door as her dog ate it I hope you are feeling a bit better and Champa too.xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
  24. I've never ever had so much rubbish said to me, even from friends, as when I had wolfhounds :D It does get pretty tiring, especially when they are a breed with a wonderful temperament and LOVE the couch and bed Yesterday I had a conversation like this whilst walking my spinone and vizsla (and I never expect anyone to know what they are and it does not bother me) woman walking a lovely ACD- IS that a wolfhound? Me- no she's called an Italian Spinone, you have alovely cattle dog, we had one the same for 15 years. Her- I had a wolfhound Me-(all excited) Oh, where from, I may know it . Her- well, the father was a cattle dog and the mum a wolfhound cross. Me- sounds lovely I HATE it when people continually call a wolfie x a wolfhound :D :D and it happens ALL the time. and to prove a point, she had NO IDEA what a wolfhound looks like, the spin is far far FAR smaller than a wolfie and the only similarity is a wirey face I know she meant well, but P L E A S E
