How To Get A Dog To Gain Weight.
ashka1 replied to Justchillin's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I have a problem with keeping weight on one of mine, tried everything, then found Eagle Pack Power and he is now doing great 4 weeks and such a difference, He has this with barf mince and lamb flaps. I have not made the satin balls but I would have to make sooo many for a newfoundland. -
Matts Matts Matts...aarrgghh!
ashka1 replied to Stewie_the_Frenchie's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Hi ashka1! Turtle is going great guns (well, except for the current little problem). Thanks for your advice on the matts. I got some advice to get a Mars Coat King - have you used these before? I think it cuts out the under coat and any matting - will the under coat grow back? Hmmm... How's the georgous baby Bella doing??? :D I agree with the other posts, Mars are great but do cut out alot of coat. Try the OMG and patience first. Baby Bella is doing great, thanks for asking, putting it over the boys already, bossy thing she is! I can see her being a real handful. She is 15 kg and only 11 weeks today. First show entries going in the post now !!! -
Matts Matts Matts...aarrgghh!

Hi Newnef, I have been wondering how Turtle is getting on. Matts..horrible job, I have found the Plush puppy OMG spray is great and helps seperate the matts (you can get in online) and also the PP seabreeze oil in the bath keeps the knots away, this stuff has cut my grooming time in half!!!. Spray OMG into the mat and comb through starting at the ends and holding the comb vertical, tease the matt out little by little . If it is very tight matting you can split the mat with sissors or thinning sissors. Poor Turtle , I hope he had fun though. I think fun is more important than knots in coats too. -
I use OMG on the newfs and love it I use it as a finishing spray, gives a nice gloss and stops fly away hairs and helps to shape the dog. Also great as a grooming spray to get out tangles Also PP Sea Breeze Oil is great, I just love it. 1 cap full into a warm hydrobath and run through as a final rinse brings up the coat condition amazingly. I also spray it lightly into the feathers and pants in the weeks leading up to a show and comb through, no knots!!!! and really conditions dry hair and skin. I have a dog with itchy skin and after rinsing him through with Seabreeze oil, his skin is no longer red and no where near as itchy. It seems to have a calming effect on the skin. What breed do you have ?

I used Plush puppy Seabreeze Oil on the Newfoundlands for the first time on the weekend...I am impressed, not at all oily or greasy but left with great coat condition and amazing shine, the coat did not go flat, so easy to groom!! I have a friend who uses it all the time (1 tspn in a warm hyrdobath final rinse) and their dogs coats are glorious.

Hi Newnewf, I have been wondering how you were getting along, glad to hear it is working out for you. I must say, the shaggy ears and fluffy feet are a great look.Very cute My new baby newf Keepa was 6 months old the other day, hard to believe, he is growing up so fast, still a bit of a rascal at times but basically a good pup. big newfy hugs for Turtle (still love the name)

Did they check the xrays for OCD? I would crate the dog and only walk it for toilet purposes for a few weeks and see if enforced rest helps
-
yep, I have heard nothing but great reports about Rowan Kilmartin at Ormeau

All puppies nip and mouth, hang on your clothes etc when they are little. Just like a baby putting things in their mooth and pulling hair, but with training and time out this stage goes. It can be a frustrating time with todlers not understanding the pup does not mean to hurt and scratch but we just crated out boy when he got too bouncy and let him have lots of games with grown ups when the baby was napping or in bed at night. I also had been told that schnauzers are yappy and can bite, but mine has never hurt a fly in 9 years. Socialising as a pup is important and as the other DOLers said, being the leader and setting clear expectations. Your puppy preschool is a great place to start.

I will be at Toowoomba , no schnauzer with me though only newfs

Hi Redmum, At most of the all breeds show you will find quite a few minis and also some magnificent giants but I rarely see standards, I dont know why but still come along and check them out! I have a mini that I bought when my youngest child was 12 months old and they are best mates. After the puppy nipping was sorted (crate training) we have had no problems with kids, cats or other dogs. I did obedience and agility with him for about two years and he is so easy and willing to train, definately smart but can be stubborn at times. When she turned 8 my daughter wanted to start obedience training as she is unable to show dogs in QLD till 10 years old, so she has been taking the Schnauzer to training and doing great (OK she is in a higher class then me ) The mini is a great size for her to handle. My daughter is nearly 10 now and the schnauzer is 9, he sleeps in her bedroom and currently thinks he is the guardian of her new kitten, very funny actually. Minis can be wounderful companions for kids and families, small enought for the kids to deal with but enough spunk and fire to go for a run with hubby. Just ensure that you do socialise them well with other dogs. It is possible to learn to clip and trim yourself, I do my boy myself but dont buy cheap clippers as they are not worth the hassle. Buy a good set that will last forever and make the job easy. Good luck what ever you decide and come and say Hi at a show some time (Newfoundlands)

I am having a problem that sounds very similar with a Newfoundland, it was suggested by the vets as an allergy either enviormental of inhaled, another thing mentioned was a zinc dificency can cause these symptoms but with a thickening of the skin also. But his skin had not thickend so we ruled that out. We put him on a fish based protien (eaglepack, ) and antihistamines and antibiotics for 10 days. I added zinc to his food and he has always had fish oils and omega 3 and 6, kelp, brewers yeast etc. I bath him in vetadine, an iodine based wash that can also be used as a rinse and left in the coat, and spray the bad spots with Betadine each day and we have a made great difference and he has heaps of coat again but I have not fully got rid of the problems, he has itchy days now and then. I have to bath him at least once a week or he does tend to scrtatch more and has a few bad spots still. Cavandra, I have wondered about giving him antihistamines daily, on going untill he is fully clear , have you seen any adverse effects doing this? what dose would you give a 65kg dog as an ongoing thing?

Which Whitening Shampoos And Stain Removers Work?
ashka1 replied to ashka1's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Thanks everyone, Lazerlights and sards it will be , I will try it out this weekend so I have a few weeks before the next show to get some white back....grubby little puppies love the rain and making mud... -
I am interested in finding out other's opinions about whitening shampoos and stain removers. We have a lot of red dirt at our place and this stains terribly. I need some hints on getting the stains out. I dont need to wash a whole dog, just white chests. I used to use "blu O" bags many years ago to make whites whiter on boxers. but we did not have this horrid red dirt then. Any one got any magic tricks or products to help????????????

Hip Dysplasia Now Affecting Front Legs
ashka1 replied to curlygirl's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Cavandra, I agree Ester C does wonders, I use it for a dog with an OCD, actually all my dogs get it now. I have a friend who's rotti has severe hip dysplasia, he had a titanium hip put in on one side, his front legs were badly bowed due to his wieght being distributed onto his front legs, the other hip replacement was to be done as soon as he healed from the first op. I told my friend to do some research on Ester C and give it a try. After 12 months the dog does not need the other hip done and his front legs, though not straight are much better than they were, my friend has photos to show the changes, I will see if I can get them.. The dog is no longer on pain meds at all and runs and plays with the other dogs all the time. I was talking with my friend last night and we were discussing how interesting it would be to get the original hip xrays and then have him rexrayd to see if there is a change in the actual hip formation on his remaining hip.....she is planning on doing this in the new year. This dog was from xrayed dogs with excelent hip scores and no history of hip dysplasia in their lines that the breeder knew of, but he was a very tall fast growing dog. -
That is great to hear Newnewf, The boy we had trouble with, Tobe, was the same, He was not at all dominant just exuberant. He is now a wonderful family pet and Turtle will be the same. Relax and enjoy
-
Good luck this afternoon! Remember to enjoy your chistmas and dont fret about it, he WILL be fine as he obviously has an owner who is doing the best for him. Let me know if you want photos from the newf specialty show.

I use a eaglepack (expensive but worth it to me) but for weight I also get duck mince from my pet food supplyer, very fatty but low allergy, introduce it slowly or it can go through them a bit.

Best of luck on Thursday Newnewf. Just found the thread. I feel for you as I have been there more than once ...As with all breeds , there is different temperaments within individual Newfs. My Newf Floyd is a dream, so sweet and never a problem , he is 1. His litter brother however.. Oh a nightmare at 5 and 6 months! I had big black bruises all up and down my arms from his "mouthing" People would actually ask what had happened to me!! He was very excitable and wanted all the attention all of the time, good or bad. His behaviour became better with more one on one long walks, and I got him swimmimg in the pool to exercise him more without weight bearing, to get rid of the energy and basic obedience training and VERY firm verbal repremands. We also had some major behavioural issues with one of the young girls, she was so boisterious and naugty but still so sweet, I love her to bits but she has been a handful. She also was very distructive, distroying a lap top, chewed the wiring on the dog trailer two days after we had it rewired, chewed up the underground water pipes, we wont even go to the day she learnt to escape from her crate in the van..... I am pleased to say at 12 months she settled down a whole lot and it happened seemingly over night??? Consistancy is the key to solving most problems, but the question is 'what do I do consistantly to start with?' As every dog and person is different what works for one may not for the other. Best of luck with the trainer and dont ever give up on the wonderful Turtle, he will come through it to be the sweet boy you belive him to be. Be sure to let us know what the trainer says.. I might need some help with my new baby Keeper, he is already a rasal at 14 weeks.

Eagle pack holistic Pro plan large breed for pups I am a recent convert to Eagle Pack, (from Pro Plan) but due to a dog with allergies I had to find an alternative dry, WOW Eagle pack is great. I can not belive the difference.

yes the Double K is a single motor one (blue plastic one), it does the job but gee it takes SOOOO long on a very big dog with a double coat. I have not used a Double Coat Airmax, Storm, I would love the double motor one here, http://www.oldfielddryers.com.au/ld2000.html I have used one heaps of times but then as Ari said, and I mentioned before , do you need such high forced air ,as you would not want to damage the cords?
-
I have an Ezycoat and it is great, I have never had a problem and it is fairly powerful. http://www.itsadogshop.com/prod1350.htm I have Newfoundlands. In my experience the double K is just not strong enough incomparison, we only use the double K at shows for touch ups or rainy days. The larger Oldfied is wonderful, I have used a friends and will definately get one if I ever need to upgrade, it makes the job so much quicker and really blows the water from the coat quickly. I am not sure if you need blowing power with a Puli though? Good luck with your research, there is just too much to choose from in this world!
