  1. A colleague (from the Northern Beaches in Sydney) was telling me that one of the pet stores up that way essentially 'rents' out puppies for a weekend - you get to take them home and do all things puppy with them and then return them at the end of the weekend! Presumably playing on the old tug on the heart strings trick - people bonding and then not bearing to return it. On the face of it, it seems better than leaving them in a glass cage on the weekend but it could only play havoc with them and confuse the hell out of them as no 2 families would do things like toilet training the same. I feel for the person who ends up buying a puppy who may have gone through several weekends being rented out. Anyone else have any thoughts on this?
  2. IMO I would not send the letter that you drafted AT ALL. You say that its to cover your arse legally - it actually opens you up to more issues - you may not understand some of implications behind the the wording/ phrasing you have used. No offence to our friendly cops on DOL but never rely on them for legal advice and I really do not understand the part of having a JP on the letter. All a JP can do is witness your signature on documents in which it is required to be witnessed. Does not add anything more than that. Your letter needs to be succinct, factual and objective. Leave all mention of the dog out of it. Dear Neighbour I was disappointed to see [who] in our yard the other day as we have previously requested (on ]date]) that you do not enter our property (including via [how]) without our consent. I again repeat my request that you do not enter our private property without our consent. If you lose a ball or otherwise over the fence then we request that you knock on our door or, if we are not at home, leave a note for us and we will return the ball over the fence. We take the issue of people on our property without our consent very seriously. We have no desire to escalate this further however we must place you on notice that we will do so if you cannot respect our request in this regard. Regards [you]
  3. I would not be feeding necks to a DDB. Necks IMO are more suitable for smaller dogs. Stick to wings for the larger breeds for a few months and then move to frames or turkey wings.
  4. Might be safer to keep dogslife on the water too!
  5. I think Troy will need a couple of drinks if he ends up sitting beside dogslife
  6. I don't agree; even if you have missed the act & reprimanded, I'm guessing based on body language with this particular 'repeat' spot she knows exactly what's what. It seems to have become her corner and as you say, you're not yelling, just vocalising your frustration with the situation. I understand that there's no point to making a deal out of it once it's done however and catching in the act is everything to the house-training scenario. Can you section that corner off..? We too have a 5 1/2 month old pup and I watch him like an absolute hawk. If I can't keep my eyes on him, outside he goes for even a short few minutes. On that note, I'm not sure really when you can be certain or confident that they're fully housetrained. Anyone? We haven't had any mistakes for a while now BUT I let him out so often through the day he's probably out more than in at present. Dogs simply do not possess that level of reasoning. He does not know he has done something wrong. He only knows he has done something wrong when there is a reprimand in conjunction with the act. The dog is reacting to the body language of the owner - not displaying guilt. The owner is seeing guilt in their dog's body language as the owner knows the dog has done something it should not have. This is one of the most classic examples of anthropomorphism.
  7. There is no point in chastising a dog unless you catch them in the act - otherwise you are just confusing her. Guilt is not something dogs are capable of - her facial expression is from you telling her off. If you know she is doing it when you are doing something else then like others have suggested, keep her with you or crate her.
  8. I can sympathise! Boo does not go in the house - he would not dare and he only tried it with the potted plant out the front once and learnt quick! However, I live in a tree lined street and every single tree has to be watered. I tend to keep walking so he can't stop and then every often stop and give the toilet command. He lost the privilege of going into Petbarn some months back. I had read that once they have learnt the behaviour then desexing does not really help.
  9. I was aiming for something less than 1/2 an hour away!
  10. Dislocated knee (which popped back in) while coming out of the ring while showing him.
  11. Do you have friends........?????? But I thought you were on DOL like the rest of us cause you didn't have a life..... ;) Are you in town?
  12. I joined just after I got Angus as I needed help with toilet training and have stuck around since - mainly because there is a very strong community within the dane thread. Because of that thread many of us have gotten to know each other off the forum and there is now a strong support network there for all of us. It was through these forums that I found a fantastic vet & vet nurse who diagnosed Angs when the other vets failed to and then provided the most amazing care. I have never forgotten the support I got when Angs went missing and the DOLers who came and searched with me and even more so, I was pretty humbled by a lot of the comments that were posted when Angs died. And thanks to DOL I know this amazing woman from North Sydney who's friendship and support in general I hold very dear to me.
  13. Capstar every day you see live fleas Frontline spray Treat the house fully to break the cycle.
  14. My reply to your PM? In which you said that you liked a good discussion? Oh for pity's sake - I commented that you were way off base with the advice you were giving and that its all good to be involved in discussions but to be informed. There was no nastiness, bullying or hurtfulness in it. Feel free to report it to the Moderators.
  15. becky thatcher - any chance you are a 1st year law student?? I would not contribute to the vet bill - would be interesting to know whether they have pet insurance. I would do what a previous person said - buy something for puppy - a nice bed, some chew type toys to entertain it while its confined, some treats and a soft puppy toy etc. For the people - wine or a voucher for dinner somewhere or the like.
  16. http://www.dmantugs.com.au/challenges.htm Following Raineth's post - here is another link to the Dane (and non-dane) Challenge re Bomb Proof Stay. My video with Boo is there. With 5-10 mins on average a day Boo went from a dog with a shaky stay at the best of time to a dog that allowed me to throw things at him and on him, put food under his nose, walk around and over (including a stranger and another dog which is not on the video) and spray him with water. Prior to the challenge any attempt to spray anything near him or even approach with things in my hand was met with running away and then if made to do it - met with shut down and avoidance. At the end I put a new challenge in front of him which he had not encountered and he held the stay. On the weekend I tested him and held him at a stay beside me while the biggest distraction possible for him (his playmate) was running around ahead of him at the beach. So thumbs up to the kiko pup approach from me!
  17. If it is in the hands of Dogs NSW then what is the purpose of airing the personal dispute here on DOL?
  18. If it turns out the pup was injured and it did require some treatment last night i will consider what to contribute. Any money given will only be a gesture of goodwill, as you've already suggested. As far as the legal issue stands, i don't believe any action could be taken against myself or my dog at all under the circumstances i explained. Furthermore, it was hardly an attack or serious injury. I am inclined to agree with you
  19. Have to correct a wrong assumption being carried through in this thread. Paying something to them for their vet bill (which I disagree with given the circumstances you posted) is not an admission of guilt or responsibility - it is a gesture of goodwill. If you do chose to pay something then make it clear to them you are paying it as a gesture of goodwill. They'll be hard pressed to later claim you admitted your dog was at fault. In addition - in NSW for example the Civil Liability Act actually states that an apology is not an express or implied admission of guilt or fault. Same applies in QLD under their Act but from memory its an expression of regret (compared to apology). On a court of competent jurisdiction can determine liability
  20. Its sold because its inside the packaging and can't be seen from the outside. You'd be surprised how common it is.
  21. Hate to say Greytmate but a lot of the dry products you buy from the supermarket such as flour, rice etc has weavils/ pantry moths in it when you buy it.
  22. I slid the folded up crate behind the back of the front seats and it fitted perfectly. What car do you have?
  23. Did you book Charlotte? We certainly did, her photos that i've seen are amazing! I can't wait to see the outcome! a HUGE thank you for the recommendation as well!!! I have no hesitation in recommending Charlotte either.
  24. I had the 4XL soft crate from NFS (122cm x 82cm x 98cm) - fitted it into a Dahiatsu Charade hatch fine - as well as the dog!
