Whoops - did not see this thread when I started mine. My comment was: What is a worry is that they are lumping all breeders together and not distinguishing between ANKC registered breeders and puppy farms/ BYBs to claim that pet shops only contribute to less than 15% of sales of dogs so are only a minor contributor to the unwanted dog situation...

Oh! That's the other benefit we've seen from the Canidae too - the gas has gone - now I get the ocassional fart only - not frequent room clearing ones (always good when you have a dane!) and improvement in skin. I was just saying in the dane thread - I switched from feeding about 700g of Eagle Pack Power to feeding 400g of Canidae and he's holding his weight if not getting more solid :p

Interesting you say this - my black (ish!) dog has the similar problem regardless of the food he was on - switched to the grain free salmon Canidae and his topline/neck blacker, thicker, shiny and softer. Any links to seal coats?

How To Get A Dog To Gain Weight?
Danois replied to Blakbelgian's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
These can be very rich and should IMO be fed with caution. -
I found the Uni good but too focused on running every test under the sun instead of starting with the basics - I ended up with a $1000 bill from them to be told my cat had an upset stomach. SAH - nup - been there done that and got the massive misdiagnosis. Good for anal glands only I have several vets in the vicinity but go to Pennant Hills.

How To Get A Dog To Gain Weight?
Danois replied to Blakbelgian's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I had success with porridge - normal oats made with water in the microwave and then made mushy with rice milk. Then mixed with kibble once cooled down a bit. Fed this once a day. I also fed a 'power' formula (EP Power). I got about 9kg on with this diet. -
And the issue is?? It does not give the breed the wrong name etc. IMO an overreaction.

Some Breeds Less 'smelly' Than Others?
Danois replied to jacqui835's topic in General Dog Discussion
Actually a Dane would not suit if you want a guard dog. Yes they are a physical deterrent but not especially known for being an effective guard dog. Would also not be a great choice as a companion dog as you would not run a Dane with an active breed until at least 12 months -

I disagree. While some of my dog's smelly coat is from skin condition, he has always smelt like that regardless of the food he's on (and there have been a few). He's always shed a lot too. He has a clean bill of health from the vets. Last dane - he was chronically ill for some time with immune mediated issues so was not a healthy dog and yet he did not shed and did not smell. -
Some Breeds Less 'smelly' Than Others?
Danois replied to jacqui835's topic in General Dog Discussion
Not sure it is a breed based issue - my last dane had no dog smell at all. He could go 6-8 weeks without a bath and then it was only because he had got dirty etc. My current dane smells and needs baths every 2 weeks. -
Just to clarify too - if you repay all the amount owing (which may include interests and costs - dependent on the agreement) then they must return the dog otherwise the law of equity and principles such as unjust enrichment would come into play.

Liens are pretty standard in boarding kennel terms and conditions - same for agistment contracts. I don't have an issue with them per se. If you boarded your dog without paying in advance and then said you would not pay/ could not pay then the retention of your animal is the security for the debt until such time as it is discharged. If the kennel let you leave with dog and without paying, they're left with a bad debt - not really fair on a small business. If you have every intention of paying for the services then a lien in a contract is not a big deal. It would be hard for them to claim a lien if you did not get/ sign any terms or they weren't displayed/ brought to your attention.

Because the NSW branch can't see a conflict of interest if it smacked them in the face!

More Questions About My Foster Boy - Huey!
Danois replied to PoppyDog's topic in General Dog Discussion
That's right. I've almost lost a couple of dogs to what started out as just kennel cough. The airlines should really be pushing for vaccinations. I used to use a known road transport bloke a fair bit but a month or so back I noticed rescue have discovered him and are now using him too. Great for rescue, but I wont use him anymore now or recommend him. He's a great guy I just can't bear the thought of all those unvaccinated animals that have been through his trailer. My next puppy will be from within the state (by luck as the breeder I want is here) but otherwise I would be doing a roadtrip myself. No more flying or transporting puppies for me. I hope breeders who send my transport are getting their puppy buyers to sign something which says that transportation is at the buyer's own risk and the breeder will not be liable for anything a pup catches in transit and the costs associated with it. -

You know what - I sincerely hope one of the rescues who cut corners does get sued. Maybe then others will sit up and take notice and make sure the same thing does not happen to them. The message does not seem to be sinking in otherwise. -
I do not think there is a grain free dry food made in Aus. I have recently made the switch to the Canidae Grain Free Salmon and my very hard to put weight on and keep weight on giant breed is looking fantastic. I chose it as it had a higher protein and fat content which was similar to the power/ performance formulas such as Eagle Pack Power which I was feeding previously. I am also finding I am able to maintain weight on less food - I am probably feeding 1/4 - 1/3rd less of the Canidae. I have also noticed a significant drop in gas - always a bonus when its a giant breed

More Questions About My Foster Boy - Huey!

*bangs head* And we're back to the same issue of quarantine! Where are these dogs serving quarantine before transportation or are the dogs going straight on to land or air transport from the pound?? If its the latter, IMO this is one of the most irresponsible actions ANY rescue can do given the amount of puppies transported around Australia. They are putting unvaccinated baby puppies at risk from contracting all manner of illnesses. All it is going to take is one p*&ssed off puppy buyer who ends up with a dead or seriously ill puppy as a result of sharing close confines with a straight from the pound dog - the airline will be sued (and this could bring live animal transport to an end) and the rescue organisation will be sued and (as PF mentioned), given how many of these organisations are set up - it will be people's personal assets at risk. There is no reason to take dogs from interstate - plenty of dogs in home state to choose from - focus on them if you're so worried about the number of dogs are going to die (harking back to the guilt trip that was posted earlier in the thread). FFS rescue - take off the blinkers - it is not all about you and the save at all costs mentality! No point in having this if innocent members of the public and their puppies are the victims of it. -

I am open to correction on this but there was a DOL username of ARQ down the bottom earlier when someone commented on the rescue group reading the thread but not sure as they have 1 post here and seem to be pulling dogs from Blacktown -

Sorry but making such basic errors as lack of quarantine and putting other people's dogs at risks is cutting corners and shows a lack of protocols and procedures are in place. People as experienced with dogs as this group purports to be should be well aware of the risks they are creating. There are so many opportunities for a new rescue group to take the experiences of other groups, set themselves up properly from day 1 to adopt best practices and hold themselves up as an example of the way rescue should be run. But too many of them fall for the same old practices and mantra of 'save at all costs'. - got to love the guilt trip. -
We used to cut down our GSD's food when it was bunny season as he'd catch at least one a day and eat them. Similarly, the cat would be put on rations as he would raid the burrows, not to mention birds, rats and mice and would not need extra food or he'd live up to his name of Podge. Life is very different when you live rural

You buy it in the supermarket

What about whether it will cause health issues in your child - didn't the pug's hair cause asthma?
-
Maybe you could ask your breeder for a bit of Supercoat when you pick up the pup, so you can slowly switch her over....save you buying a whole bag. ;) 1.5kg of Supercoat is a whole $10 or $11 - not exactly expensive.

Floorboards here and I use rugs with the non slip fabric under them. Best rug I have found is the one I got from Bunnings which is in the dining room area (which the back door opens off) - it is one of those shaggy/ loop pile ones in a mocha colour. Hides everything I'm a bit stuck when it comes to rugs given I have a black dog and a ginger cat - regardless of which colour I go, at least one lot of hair is going to show up on a rug. ;)
