My last dog at immune mediatied polyarthritis and lived on varying doses of cortisone (and then Imuran) for the 9 months between diagnosis and when he was PTS. It is a great drug for the quality of life it can provide but yes it has its side effects - I did not see much poly dipsia/ poly uria but towards the end, the muscle wastage in the head was obvious and he got a bit of a belly. In the end he developed pancreatitis.

Holistic Select Available In Sydney
Danois replied to Kajtek's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I noticed PetBarn had a bit in stock yesterday -
We went to the beach today and afterwards, stopped for gelato at Austinmer and sat in the sun on the edge of the boardwalk in the sun - me with my mint choc chip cone and Boo with his cup of fior de latte (aka vanilla). And cos he asked nicely, he got the end of my cone. A nice memory to have! Also remembered I had this photo from last year - from the icecream van at Jubilee Park in Glebe.

Petition To Make The Humans Pee Outside On A Cold Frosty Morning
Danois replied to 7464's topic in General Dog Discussion
What's this concept of going outside on cold mornings to pee?? I'm not silly, I wait until the sun has warmed the bricks in the yard and then go out. Sometimes if I am a bit busting, I will help water the potted plants just by the back door but that makes my human a bit cranky at me! Otherwise, I have a fun game and see how long I can hold on for. My record is about 15 hours and my human counted to 120 before I stopped peeing! Boo -
I had a new puppy and toilet training was not going well I am not sure why I did not find it when I was looking for a puppy though.

Immune Mediated Thrombocytopenia
Danois replied to OzDallyGirl's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Sorry to hear the diagnosis. My last dane had immune mediated polyarthritis (and IMHA at the end) which started showing at around 6 months of age and diagnosed at just over 12 months. We were able to manage it with medication for around 9 months. As Dyzney said - it is an emotional rollercoaster. Pred and Imuran are strong drugs and come with side effects - they were never a huge issue for us. Anyway - there is a really good UK Yahoo Group called CIMDA - Canine Immune Mediate (something something!) which I recommend that you join - there is a huge amount of knowledge there. All the best. -
My dog is an indifferent eater and trying a strict regime of bowl down for short time and then removed made no difference. He would not eat more at the next meal or sometimes, even eat the next meal and I ended up with a dog that got skinner and skinner. As this is a one dog house he is now free fed. Majority of the time his breakfast is only partially eaten and he'll finish that at night. I add more mid-evening and he'll normally have a feed about 10pm and eats overnight. Some days he'll fast himself all day. Free feeding does not work for many but I am happy to do this.

I had forgotten - the local gelato shop (frequently ranked as one of Sydney's best) used to give my previous dog his own gelato when I stopped in for a cone on a walk. He'd also get some pieces of broken cone.

They'd be awesome in dane sized!

A store would not get in trouble for selling a person chocolate icecream knowing that person would feed it to their dog! In any event, the amount of chocolate in icecream is minimal and I highly doubt it would cause any issues for the dog. Have to admit I'd be pretty peeved at a shop assistant telling me what I could and could not feed my dog - my dog so my choice! That aside, yep I give my dog icecream. He loves soft serve from Maccas and has a theory that the sound of a spoon scrapping the side of a bowl = ice cream for him.

I get home close to 7pm. Dog throws his toys about and races outside to pee. After I get changed, cat gets fed, dog gets fed then I get fed. Dog assumes position on couch. Dog maintains position on couch or his bed all night - from time to time, he resets his position, checks the food bowl or has a drink or goes off to the bedroom. I will usually do a short training session with him. Some nights I can do the bed routine and turn off the lights and he's still on the couch so have to ask if he's coming to bed. He goes out the front to the toilet, sniffs and zooms around the yard. When he comes in, his blanket gets drapped over him and he goes on his bed in the bedroom or comes on the bed. He gets up in the night usually and has a feed.

I know the one you mean - beside the pub. From the recommendations here, I'd drive 2 more minutes and go to the Livingstone Road vets.

Boo's coat went before he had any cortisone. He had very low, ocassional dose of it during summer for the last 2 years. His turned at around 6 months and he's nearly 3 now.

Dogs Victoria - Photo Id Now Required For Membership Renewals
Danois replied to wayrod's topic in General Dog Discussion
I am really surprised that people are getting so worked up about providing basic identity information - as others have said it is less than what you have to produce when joining a Video Store. What information is on your licence that is not on your application form aside from a photo. It serves to verify that you are who you say who are. If you have nothing to worry about in providing the information (i.e you're above board) then why worry? As for what DV will do with the information - that's very simple. They either check it and shred it thus not storing it OR they retain it. If they retain it then they have to comply with the Privacy Act re gathering, use and storage of information. The Act is pretty rigorous and the consequences of non-compliance are high so I'm sure DV have covered off this risk. -
Definitely no sun baking here - that would involve going outside It's not dead coat either.

Welcome to my world! This is my BLACK dane... He gets some allergies in summer and has a staphy yeasty coat but in winter goes away. His coat is thin and there is no undercoat. Topline and neck is black. He was black as a puppy. Previous thyroid test was normal range. Fed Canidae grain free salmon so gets the omegas. Otherwise healthy and active.

Is there an indication on when they will be ready? When I purchased I did not realise they were still so far away and it sounds like Winter will nearly be over before they're done.

This thread is quite old and you're replying to a number of people who are no longer active on the forum.

Unexplained fever was one of the signs my boy was unwell - he had immune mediated polyarthritis. Keep pursuing it to rule out possibilities - definitely go see a specialist. I regret not pushing my vet further - he was not diagnosed for another 6 months and this was by a different vet. He had a fever, high WBC and fluid in joints but they did not seem to consider IM issues.

To All The People Who Are Not Sure About Desexing Under 12 Months
Danois replied to KOE's topic in General Dog Discussion
I don't quite understand your comment about dog owners spending a day in the shoes of a pound attendant Can you explain what you mean and why it is necessary and what the average dog owner take away from the experience?
