Not Sulphar from the garden centre! You'll need to look for MSM supplements from the health shop/ supermarket. That said - if your dog is suffering from allergies how is your vet treating this? Have you tried a course of cortisone?

I'd be seeking tenancy advice. If the landlord has previously given permission then they should not be able to withdraw it unless there has been an issue with the dogs and a default notice has been served. In which case they would have a certain time to remedy the default (or dispute it). If their lease is still on foot then it is a takes a fair bit of time for a landlord to apply to evict etc - time in which they could find a new property without having to (technically) remove the dogs. If they are out of lease then it can be terminated on notice by either party. Good luck in the quest to find a dog friendly rental in Enmore/ Newtown - it is hard enough to find a decent rental for a reasonable sum of money without factoring in dogs. Your friend may have more luck in Marrickville and Bardwell Valley etc If they do have to be moved elsewhere then I'd book them into Hanrob - they operate a free pick up/ drop off service from Sydney Animal Hospital in Erko.

Puppies Down In Pasterns - Any Advice?
Danois replied to Kirty's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Ester C - many dane people use this when they start to go down in the pasterns when teething. Get it from the chemist - either in powder or tablet form and add to their food. Don't use Vit C tablets. I'd be trying that in the first instance. In the absence of a vet diagnosis, I would not give calcium supplements to a large breed dog. A super premium food should have sufficient in it. -
How could a body set up for a limited group of people (registered purebred dogs) trump something which is governed by a bylaw which is set for all dog owners Of course, the Council's law will prevail.

Any Insurers That Give A Rebate For Chiro?
Danois replied to Inevitablue's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Not that I have seen - pet insurance is a lot less 'sophisticated' than people insurance and only covers medical treatment - and only then required treatment as opposed to elective treatment. -
Depends if what type of assistance you're looking for but Trudi and Julie at DogLogic are lovely. If you look at their website you will be able to see if that is what you're after.

Bulking Up A Healthy, But Very Underweight Dog.
Danois replied to brutus's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
My dane was extremely lean when he was younger despite consuming large amounts of food (feeding Eagle Pack) - he was otherwise in great health. I switched to the following diet and fed 4 times a day - breakfast, left with lunch, dinner and supper: - Eagle Pack Power (orange bag); - chicken carcasses; - for a week out of every 4-5 I would make a mix of rice, cooked sweet potato and pumpkin, fruit and vegie pulp; - full fat yoghurt, sardines and tuna on his kibble; and - breakfast was porridge made in the microwave with water and then made mushy with rice milk. (Loves this one!) This was effective for getting the weight on him - I think it was about 7kg in 2 months to get him from 53kg to around 60kg. I now maintain him on Canidae Grain Free Salmon (same protein/ fat roughly at the EPP), half dozen chicken wings as well as an assortment of cottage cheese, tuna and sardines in tomato sauce. -
IMO that diet is inadequate for any dog. Lose the cat mince and tinned dog food (which is just water) and use a decent dry food like Eukanuba, Nutro etc if you want a mid range food. The dog is probably not getting adequate nutrition from the diet and using everything up in it. I'd feed a complete diet dry food in conjunction with chicken frames. I would not feed chicken necks to a larger dog as they can be a choking hazard. If you are on more of a budget you can make up some food to supplement the dry - I use a mix of cooked rice, raw mince (I get mine from asian butcher)and then put an assortment of fruit and vegies through the juicer and use the pulp (discarding majority of juice) and some yoghurt and bit of garlic. I also add some cooked pumpkin and sweet potato all mashed up. While you may be feeding 1.5kg a day it is clearly not the right diet. The recommendation of 600gm of Hills does not sound too low. I feed my 60kg 3 year old dog around 750gm a day of a super premium dry food.

Surely it is a term of the order against the father that he is not allowed to incite others to harass you etc? If the kids are hanging over the fence then I'd be calling the police and discussing with them whether he is in breach. I'd buy some mature and fast growing bamboo and put that between the fences and I'd also be splitting the yard so the dogs cannot get near the fence - and they cannot throw something far enough.

This is probably not going to be overly helpful as I cannot remember their username but there is a DOLer who does this for a business. Her username has dane in it and usually posts in rescue. She'd be a good person to contact.

It also has 2% wheat in it... Black Hawk adult Lamb & Rice is wheat, corn & soy FREE. The puppy formula contains 2% wheat ;) My error - the website is confusing by only having tabs for cat and puppy food - just realised you have to scroll all the way down past distributor details to see the dog food details.

Canidae Grain Free - another very happy customer here. Massive reduction in farts was an upside!

Puppy Food / Vet Recommendations
Danois replied to BBrown86's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Please come and join us in the Dane subforum - lots of Sydney based people there! I second the recommendation for Pennant Hills Vet (where you'll find Stormie and her dane) - I have used Ian there for 5 years now for my danes and travel from the Inner West to there. I brought up my current dane on Eagle Pack (but now feed Canidae) and was happy with it. Generally your breeder is the best guide for what food their lines do best on but some breeders are not as big on this as others. 5.5 - 6 cups is sounding about right - expect this to go up too. I was feeding 8-9 cups a day to a growing pup. And in my case - exceeding the feeding recommendations on the packet just to keep weight on. Vitamin C can be a useful supplement when they are teething - I have only tended to use Ester C when it looks like my pup is going down in the pasterns. Fish oil/ Omega supplements can be used and I know others use joint supplements a bit later on. If you are feeding a super premium food (like EP etc) then you should not really need anything extra supplement wise. -
No point in worrying in my house - as an adult, he uses the bench as a chin rest...

A friend and I were complimented on how well behaved our dogs were at the beach the other weekend. Both dogs are the same height - mine is 60kg and hers is around 75kg. Person giving the compliment even commented they were better behaved than his kelpie. Our response was when you have dogs this big (height and weight) you have no choice to make sure they're well behaved as its not worth the risk for them not to be - especially as accidents can happen so easily. I have to admit I am surprised at the number of small dog owners (and I mean those that are under 10kg) who let their dogs run up to my dog and get under his feet. If he stumbles/ trips then its not going to end well for their small dog. I can't find the photo but I have one somewhere of my last dane (who was 75kg) lying down and this small breed puppy (smaller than his head!)climbing on his head, getting under his ears etc.

Dislocated knee from running in show ring. Bad fricton burn across the back of the neck after he raced past me, caught the end of the leather lead which was around my neck and pulled it at very high speed. Black eye. Top of foot is constantly bruised from having a 60kg who stands on it several times a day!

Is This Reasonable Behaviour? Bit Of A Rant...
Danois replied to aussielover's topic in General Dog Discussion
If I want to enter a fenced area and there are small dogs present, I will always call out 'are your dogs big dog friendly' before entering - got a no answer once but the owner said that they would leave so I could enter. I have also had a couple of people say - oh yes. First thing the little SWF does is run up, get in his face and harass him - but of course this is amusing  -
I would not tolerate it. You are in charge of the house - not her and she needs to recognise this. I would be seeking professional help for it as I'd be concerned it will escalate even further.
-
Yes, containment other than tethering.... No - you can have containment and still tether your dog. The way it reads, you can have a fenced back yard and tether your dog at the front if you choose.
-
I don't interpret that to mean it is illegal to tether your dog on your property. I interpret it to mean that if you have a dog then you must have some sort of containment system in place.
-
I would keep my mouth shut - it is really none of my business what my colleagues chose to do in their personal lives. She might turn out to be a fantastic and responsible dog owner.
-
Short answer - NO. Longer answer - No, the dog in question is on main register with Dogs QLD and then only if you have undertaken all necessary health testing for the breed. Edited: I overlooked the part that said 'he' LOL so yes only registered breeder if own the bitch.

He was diagnosed at just over 12 months but he had symptoms from about 5-6 months but my vets (at the time) failed to diagnose him despite him presenting with fever, low WBC, swollen hock and shifting lameness. He was 21 months when I had to have him PTS. Pancreatitis meant we had to back off the cortisone and he developed IMHA. Too many fires on too many fronts for him to cope with I do wonder sometimes 'what if' the vets had picked it up earlier.
