Chillydogs are good - they do a long and lean design. I've just discovered www.d-fadogs.com who are an NZ company. Otherwise look up D&D Coats on FB - itsmeg from DOL makes them and is outfitting half the Danes in Oz!!

No - too many dogs in a small space! We are going to organize a Giant Paws Walk in the next couple of months instead - social outing to raise money for Dane rescue.

Hi - come into the Dane thread in the breed sub forum or search for Ozzie Danes on Facebook as you'll get a lot of breed specific advice as Danes can be an interesting challenge sometimes for training! I would not be letting him off lead while he does not recall as its too much if a risk. Get yourself a long line (horse lunge leads are perfect) and a bit empty oval and train the recall by reeling him in. As for not being interested in treats when outside of the home - sounds like everything else is waaaay more interesting. Sometimes being well socialized can be a pain as they have to know everything that is going on rather than just ignoring things. My 4 year old has been a challenge at times - lots of interest in other dogs, bit of anxiety and no food drive makes obedience training interesting! Joining a good obedience club is a great start - look for one which uses different training methods as purely positive training does not always work on a Dane but a simple change in tone of voice can make a difference!

I must be odd! I enjoy a few days away from the dog (and cat) every so often! It's nice to not have to worry about the routines etc etc for a few days!

Help! Labrador Puppy Vomiting/diarrhoea
Danois replied to Chikko Baby's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Not saying that the OP should not take the dog to the vet if she feels it is needed but I am curious as to why the immediate reaction to a dog who has thrown up and had a runny stool is to take it to the vet. I could understand it if it had happened a couple of times and the dog was lethargic/ not itself etc. My dog threw up earlier today - I've simply withheld his next meal and made sure he is still drinking - I don't see the need to rush off to the vet. -
Don't know where you are but I can't remember if Pennant Hills Vet sells it but I'm sure I have seen it in Livingstone Rd Vet in Petersham

Today Dante is back at home where he belongs. I know one day I'll be able to think of Dante and smile at his goofiness and the trials he put you and Lance through (breaking into kitchen cupboards comes to mind) but for now its tears which come - for the fact that Dante is gone and for the pain you and Lance are feeling. Life sucked for Dante sometimes but you guys never stopped in your commitment to him. Run free Dante and I'll look for your star. Xx

Thanks but it needs to be a check chain. He is good on lead but it is a 60kg plus dog I am holding on to.
-
Because I prefer the look of the black which does not break the line of his neck (it's a black dog) and that way to people don't feel the need to comment on using check chains. I don't care at the quality either - if it chips after a few months so be it - I'll just get a new one!
-
I should clarify - its not for the show ring these days - I did use them when he was shown but now its his standard collar when we're away from the house. I just know the only places to get them are from show supply people.
-
Thanks Meea but I got the last black one from them in the weekend and I've not seen them in Don's for ages.
-
Hi Has anyone seen black check chains around in show supplies vans etc? I know stock did not come into the country in December as usual as apparently the UK company is no longer operating. I'm after a 60cm or 65cm one - I need the heavier chain not the fine one as its for a Dane if anyone can help! I have a 75cm one here I got in the weekend which is just way too big. It was $25 from memory - has not been used - if anyone wants it they can have it for $20 including postage paid either as a donation to Dane rescue or you buy 20 raffle tickets from them!
-
Lol! We play bitey face here too! Maybe we're the crazy ones given the dogs are 60kg plus!

http://www.d-fa.com/products.html For those that buy from Chillydogs in Canada, check out these guys from NZ. Maxgenetics at the Royal in Sydney have their stuff and I grabbed one of the Napoleon leads for training. After exploring their website, liked the look of thr slip collars but they were not available however they've been super helpful on email and am now sussing out the Merino coat for winter too. Ignoring the Stunt Puppy collars they have though LOL!

My dog is my dog. He is a part of my life but he is not my life. I despise the term furkid and find it a little disturbing people use it to refer to their dogs.
-
I'd like to think this was just a wind up but am not so sure... You will never find a vet who will treat your dog like it is a child. Vets are intelligent and well educated people - they will treat a dog like a dog as that is what it is. You know what they say. - if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck then it's a duck! As for unfeeling vets - sorry but I don't want a vet who is sobbing and wailing as they administer the final injection. I expect them to be professional and composed. Just like my clients don't want to see me getting cranky when I don't get my way - they want me to be professional and not let personal feelings cloud that professionalism. I think the OP needs to reassess her relationship with her DOG.
-
If you think your dog won't cope then you need to work on that now so when the need arises the dog will cope. It will make the experience a lot easier/ less stressful on the dog and a lot easier on the vet and vet staff who need to look after the dog.

Anyone With Experience In Prednisolone Tablets?
Danois replied to donski's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Made a huge difference for my boy for 9 months - he was on a daily dose of varying strengths and at the lowest dose, it was minimal for a dog his size. I did not see any lethargy from memory nor an increased appetite. He was drinking a little more. After long term use he had some muscle wastage in the head and a little pot belly! People appear irrationally scared of cortisone but it is a very effective drug when used correctly - which includes tapering doses but it must be used strictly as directed. -
That's not now the last 3 Royals have been from my experience. Yes the benches are behind barriers but the public can walk up and down the aisles and see every single dog. Most of the gates have a security person on them to stop the public coming in - which is also for security of exhibitor's possessions. You can easily talk to members of the public as you are within a meter of them and they will ask questions and you can bring the dog up to the barrier for them to meet.

Ah Saxonpup - your first paragraph can apply equally to big and small dogs. In my experience the majority of giant dog owners especially have their dogs very well under control and trained because they know the importance of control due to size and strength. It is actually the owners of the SWF brigade who, in my experience, are not usually under much control at all and also tend to all into the spoilt little brats category. I don't know what the answer is - maybe it is due to the type of owner wo go for big vs small and the less likely a dog will get mollycoddled.

You perceive her as shy and timid but it might only be in that setting. Being shy does not stop you from being able to a good pack leader - there is a lot more to it than that! How do you know what goes on at home? I'd probably be judged by you too - I'm in 3rd class at obedience (when I go) but in class my dog has the attention span of a goldfish and forgets he knows anything. Away from class when we train, I have a dog who works offlead and easily completes the exercises.
-
Wow judgmental much. As you are clearly experienced in training why not offer her some help instead of labelling her incompetent on a public forum - perhaps she has simply not found a method which works for her.

Dane breeders euthanise white pups too - has nothing to do with their ability to retain breeder status as far as I am aware. Its more about white pups are likely to be deaf as well as having a host of other issues. Here is an interesting link: http://www.chromadane.com/whites.htm Personally I think euthanising white puppies at birth is a sign of a responsible and ethical breeder.
