Has Your Dog Ever Choked On A Raw Bone?
laffi replied to puppymum's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I feed RMB everyday and my dogs never chocked on these. I have two large dogs and I like to feed them: chicken: maryland, wings, necks, drumsticks turkey: wings, necks lamb: necks, flaps beef: brisket bones roo: tail I tried and didn't like: lamb shanks and turkey drumsticks. So no weight bearing bones here apart from chicken. I feed my cat chicken wings and necks. -

What's a traveling vet? Do you know of an equivalent in NSW ?

How about giving your dog one of these items at the time? As in a couple of giblets or a piece of ox heart? Btw with such an amazing selection of meats I would be doing prey model diet
-
I would use the ducks in the park as a reward. So work on simple stuff at the beginning (like hand touches) and release him to chase the ducks. Gradually increase the difficulty. Have him on leash at the beginning to make sure she doesn't release himself. Use the ducks to strengthen your relationship with him :D

The meats on your list sounds great but why do you need to mince them? Why don't you just give your dog 1/4 of lamb heart or whatever? Btw according to prey model diet you want to feed around 10-15% bone and 10-20% offal (which would be liver or kidney NOT heart; heart is a muscle meat) On your list great meat sources are: chicken hearts lamb hearts ox heart ox tongue For bone content I would just add heaps of chicken necks/wings/drumsticks :D My cat is about the size of your dog and she eats them whole :p

Great advice LP :D

I remove all the bedding from the crates when I give them RMBs :p
-
Hmm good point ML although I just put them in their crates inside when I give them raw meaty bones. Once they are done they just lie on their beds and are very content

I think pigs ears everyday is definitely not healthy. What happened to healthy and natural dog chews like raw meaty bones: roo tail, lamb neck, brisket bones?!?!! I don't understand why do people feel the need to feed their dogs preserved, unhealthy, quite expensive might one add, treats when you can just go to your local butcher and find so many more healthy and natural alternatives.

That's amazing TSD!!!!!

I forgot about that. He would have a little whinge though. He could see me out the window the whole time too. Maybe I could hire someone to drive him along beside me while I'm walking the others :) :) Maybe I should volunteer?

Try to work it out and it will make you feel SO much better

it's a great DVD and I STRONGLY recommend it I think the attitude "let him be, he will get over it" works for certain dogs.... but I think your dog is way passed this stage. So I would start from the beginning, as if he was a pup and didn't know what a crate was. You want to build an association that being in the crate is a fabulous thing. So things I recommend would be: *feeding all of his meals in the crate *letting the dogs out one at a time, but not always letting chopper out first *making it a race to go into his crate *leaving him in his crate with a bone or a kong filled with treats (not going away too far so he is not too anxious and is able to eat them... once he gets too anxious and doesn't eat means you are trying to go too far too soon) *gradually build to you playing outside with other dogs to going for a walk. The walk should be the last thing you introduce him to Unfortunately my method is not a quick fix solution It works though, it worked on my dog who was very anxious (to the point of not eating her raw bone) if I went for a walk with my other dog; it worked for heaps of my friends too. In an agility trial you will see heaps of dogs being crated. Most of them hate it (or would hate it if not trained properly) as it's like a 'sin bin' for them. They want to be out and about, not confined to a crate. So your problem is not unique. It's quite common really.

I am not asking if he can sleep there at night. I am asking what have you done to leave him there happily during the day .... seems like he DEFINITELY needs training!!!!!!!!
-
Have you done any crate training with him? What have you done for him to like his create and learn how to relax there even when you and other dogs are not around?

I agree with poodlefan! Keep your mind open I do agree that pancreatitis is a tricky one... but also there is a lot of vets who don't recommend raw diets for bad reasons. Dr Fougere would be the first person to tell you (she told me) that raw diets don't suit every dog. I think we all need to keep an open mind on that issue. I totally agree that raw diets don't suit every dog... What I was trying to say is that some vets are against raw diets full stop (and these are wrong reasons according to me).
