Ndtf - Who Is Doing Course Starting Soon?
laffi replied to Winterpaws's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I completely understand where you're comming from.... sometimes OH's are not as big doggy lovers as us lot here!! All I can say start working on OH I want to do the course in the future too - so maybe by the time I'm ready to do it - you're OH would have given in and we can do it at the same time!!! Sounds like a great idea! I might even cook a nice dinner tonight -

Well how do you justify it to yourself then? I mean it is quite a bit of money and I just what to know what you get (or got for the ones who did it) out of it. I am just trying to get some opinions why the course is useful (not why my OH is useless ). I think it's a fair question to ask and I was hoping for some honest opinions. -

It's around three grand. Wow, that's quite a bit. How can I convince my OH I need it badly (apart from the fact that I do)? How did you justify it? -

I am not a good runner, at least not a super fast one. However I did train and finish two marathons and heaps of half marathons. I can run for hours but it took me quite a while to get there. At the beginning I couldn't run more then 5 min, however it's really important that you keep your hear rate high for at least 25min if you want to get fit, therefore when I started training I did run-walking. It's up to you what ratio you use, I did something like 3 min run 30 sec walk. You always can adjust for the run intervals to be longer and longer when you get more fit. It's the method most of the marathon trainers in the US would recommend for the beginners because you can get a good workout, learn how to run and it's actually good to stay injury free (very important for discance runners). Also for some it's the best way to run (overall) the fastest, since you can recover a little bit when you walk and therefore can run faster. I know that for the trail it has to be continuous running, but I truly believe that for the beginner it's the best way to get there. Each session (esp at the beginning) should be at least 25 min. Not much longer than that either, but for some reason it's the a good barrier for your body to adjust to. And do it 3 -4 times a week. Don't run two days in a raw (can lead to injury). I would do all these sessions with your dog, since you start slow the dog will also build up muscles and will stay injury free in the future. Good luck!

Sorry I have a silly question. :D If you are feeding your dog super premium (like Nutro or Eagle Pack) why do you add mince or anything else for that matter? These foods are supposed to be balanced with exactly the right amount of proteins, fats, carbs etc. Don't you worry you are breaking this balance by adding stuff?

Mine developed a lump where she had had her 2nd vaccination. It went away after few weeks.

People here give amazing, selfless help but if you abuse it, even once, it's fair enough for them not to take you seriously anymore. I think you should try to earn their trust rather then criticise them if you ever want to get any help.

Hello and welcome. I am sure you will get a lot of help from other people here. I am not an expert but here are my comments: 1) When you come home and see shredded stuff never punish your dog. He doesn't make a connection between destroyed shoes that he "took care of" few hours ago and your reaction to it so much later 2) The guilty look on his face does not mean he knows what he did wrong, it means that you must have punished him a few times much later after the mischief and now he is trying to avoid the punishment. He does not know what he is being punished for though 3) Always correct straight after it happened (within seconds). Even two minutes later is just too late 4) Provide toys, rotate them so he doesn't get bored of them. I highly recommend kongs to chew on with stuff inside that can take him hours to get out 5) When you teach him not to do something show him what you want him to do (for example play with his own toys) and reward the good behavior 6) Take him for a walk before you leave him for a day, tired dog is less much less likely to misbehave. 7) When you walk him in the morning add a short 5min training session 8) Mentally and physically tired dog will sleep most of the day rather then try to entertain himself Good luck maria

Sorry I didn't mean to be rude, I was just surprised that no one else commented on it. I think that larger breed food would be better for your dog. I have a golden retriever puppy (she is on Royal Canin Puppy Lab). I think it's amazing food and I highly recommend it for your pup. I think nutro large breed is also something worth considering. These two include glucosamine and chondroitin that would be very beneficial for your dog's joints. Most of the super premium foods add these to their large breeds formulas.

I use it for with my cats and it's AMAZING (I would pay milions of dollars for this product). It's also great for my golden retriever but it hardly works on my aussie shep. It really depends on the type of coat they have (soft and staight, cat like, would be the best I think).

I totally agree. My my pup was skratching like craze at the beginning but after a couple of weeks she got used to it. Yes it takes time.... However I did start her with a leather collar that she was skratching all the time and then I switched to a Lupine one, it made a huge difference as well.

Why are you feeding her medium breed, if she is a lab she should be on large breed food. I agree with others, I never look at the feeding instructions. I was told that most of the time they recommended dose is too high for hot Australian climate by ~30%! I have moved to QLD from Chicago (US) 6 months ago with my animals and I did have to cut down on their usual diet. And I was already feeding them less them recommended in the US.

I totally agree with Poodle wrangler. Two of my dogs were eating everything nicely but then I started adding some little extras to their diet and one of them just ignored her food and was always only eating and waiting for extras. After 1.5 days of no extras she realized she has to eat what she is given since nothing else will be available. So it was totally me who created the problem of a fussy eater. A healthy dog will not starve itself.

I was just wondering...

Where are you and how cold does it get there at night? It sounds like you are very well prepared though. Just make sure that the sleeping spots/beds are off the ground (elevated) for insulation.

I don't think we will ever know. The last time the owner logged into the forum was December 2006

I would also put something over the windows to limit the stimulations and train him/play etc inside the car when it's not moving, even if you are not planning to go anywhere. Hope it helps.
