  1. I had a great weekend as well. (my doggies are not very advanced tho). Midge (18mo): (our frisbee competition was canceled so it was just in our usual park) she managed to catch at +30m 4 paws in the air 4 times in a raw (we stopped there though). Her heeling was excellent as well when we practiced. Also it getting better at d/b. Laffi (8mo): as some know we had some retrieving problems (she wouldn't bring it back or wouldn't even play if Midge wasn't there). This morning I took her for a walk wo Midge, threw her frisbee and she retrieved it 3 times with great style. She didn't stop so sniff the grass at any stage! Same with heeling on the field! She was stunning. It was really amazing because she is going through her teenage years and sometimes is really hard to get her concentration.
  2. Well I have started training with Midge (17+mo aussie shep) and just wanted to be aware of any possible problems. She seems to have none at the moment
  3. What kind of injury are the dogs who are doing weaving prone to?
  4. So from what was said before there are two main reasons for a shy dog: - genetic - poor puppy socialization When it's genetic, do you mean it's breed dependent (so the whole pedigree) or just that the parents were shy? I guess what I am asking is: if the parents were not shy, would you then think it must be the socialization or still possibly genetic?
  5. As title says. Do you think shy dogs are dogs there were simply not properly socialized as pups?
  6. I don't think anybody can tell how much food is ideal for your dog. It depends on the dog's metabolism and activity. I would say that lean is good though
  7. I have never heard of Advantix Collars. I actually have never seen ticks collars that smell nice. I am only familiar with Kiltix collar and Preventic. I have tried Kiltix and it did small really bad and really strong Where do you get your Advantix Collars?
  8. I have the Snooza one. The cheapest place I found was: http://www.itsadogshop.com/category69_1.htm I use it for running with my dog. It's great!
  9. Sentinel Spectrum and Advantix. I would like to use a collar for ticks but from my limited experience the smell was still quite intense after more than a week of usage. Anyone had similar problems with the tick collars? I buy everything from pricelesspets as well
  10. You should start using dry food ASAP. Wet food is 80% water The good brands of dry food are Nutro, Nutrience, Eagle Pack Hollistic, Royal Canin... Anything that works for your dog is a good food. You can also prepare her food. If you want to try this, look into BARF diet (do a search on this forum).
  11. Does anyone have any recommendations for the flyball training DVDs? Does anyone have a flyball training DVD that I could borrow? Thank you!
  12. Thanks so much for sharing! I am not ready yet to trial but am already excited about it LOL I have a question: who recommends to go for two trials on the same day? why?
  13. With my dogs, I just use their normal food during everyday training. Only few times a week, when they have to fight all the distractions (at obedience or agility club) do I use special treats: diced: - kabana - devon - bacon - Nature's gift semi dry food - cheese I use their normal food because I want to make sure they are eating healthy and balanced food. I train quite a bit and I love rewarding so I don't want 50% of their diet consist of treats If he loves his food, it's a great reinforcer so you can definitely use it as treats. That's all that matters.
  14. What type of cheese would you recommend for dog treats? Does your dog love a specific kind? (I hope none of them is a French connoisseur LOL)
  15. How did you teach them to drop when you are still moving?
  16. RC retriever is probably one of the best choices for your puppy When you give him the chicken necks make sure he chews them. If he swallows them whole try freezing them (and give frozen). If that doesn't work you should probably get something bigger next time (like wings or turkey necks). I never really follow the instructions of how much to feed the dog. I just adjust if I see she is putting on too much weight or not putting on enough. Roughly though I give about 2/3 of the recommended amount.
  17. I would also suggest to add some meaty bones to his diet: chicken necks, wings, frames. It's good for them and it cleans their teeth. Also a marrow bone from time to time (cut in the middle so he can get to the marrow). I have a golden retriever puppy and she was chewing a lot when she was 8-17 weeks old. The bones definitely helped. Although I can't give her chicken necks because she swallows them whole .
  18. I think it's great that you tried and gave it a shot! I am sure it's going to be so much better next time!
  19. That's very helpful! Thank you so much Where can I get the 'turning board'? THANKS!
  20. What BC is saying is what I have done with my 2 ladies and now both have nice stands. I hit a wall with this method though with my boy, he hated it, would jump around like a big turkey. He ended up learning stand by his nightly routine of putting his coat on at bedtime. Hard to explain, but basically I told my black dog to stand, big praise and coat on, then repeated with yellow dog and then did same with him. Some may think I'm bit mean but after 6 nights without his coat he now stands very nicely, day or night, me armed with a coat or not armed with a coat! Wow that's actually a great idea. When I put the collars and leads on to go for a walk my two are always standing. I just need to "use" it now
  21. Exactly! I have good sits and downs and terrible stays. So hard to catch them now
  22. I have been playing this game actually. Midge is actually quite good at it. With her it's mostly stand from heeling I am struggling with (gravitates toward sit). Laffi on the other hand stands and moves forward when I want her to stand from sit, or half sits when I want her to stand from heel.
