They are both golden retrievers. Btw should she wash the bedding in something specific? Very unlikely, but with Golden Retrievers, we think extra eyelashes, punctal atresia. (Neither of which fit with what you are describing...) I think it sounds environmental, though. I dunno if washing the bedding in something different will make any difference, but I use Earth Choice cos it is cheap and has no harsh chemicals. I'd also suggest before changing brands of washing powder that a couple of "blank cycles" be done with some white vinegar in the washing machine to neutralise any soap already there. It's pointless changing powders if the residue remains in the machine. Sensitivities often don't take very much to cause them to flare. Thanks ellz Do you put the vinegar with the clothes or do you put in in the powder/detergent drawer?

Thanks Erny! :D I will pass it on to her tomorrow. The dogs are very healthy otherwise.... actually so healthy that when she went to see another vet (while they were on the eye drops) the other vet thought they were 110% healthy. Btw they are on raw diet etc... (so no preservatives or colorants)

A friend of mine asked me to post it. She has two dogs and both have persistent conjunctivitis: creamy-green eye discharge every morning. The owner took them to the vet who diagnosed conjunctivitis and gave some eye drops. The discharge cleared with the eye drops but came back after a few days of stopping the drops. She went back to the vet who said to continue with the eye drops for 2 weeks (not just one week as she did originally) but the discharge reappeared again after stopping the treatment. The vet doesn't know what to do now.... Could it be environmental?? Would cleaning all the bedding etc help? Since it's both dogs it must be contagious ... Any other ideas? :D Thank you!

The thread doesn't actually mention any names. However badboyz did PM me so it might be the same place. yeah I know when I was looking for kennels last year I called/emailed heaps and none of them was accepting titer tests. Badboyz's one was the only option I have found.
-
Titer tests establish dog's immunity so the dog doesn't have to be vaccinated.

Check out this thread: http://www.dolforums.com.au/index.php?showtopic=147320 (I didn't end up going through with it so can't help you more with that. But badboyz did PM me their telephone number so maybe contact them? )

You know I thought your boy in your avatar was a Dane I just re read that you have been speaking to other wiemie owners in Germany - god I'm a dork Perhaps it is a common concern with weim's - see I know Golden have guts of steal so feel comfortable feeding brisket bones, chicken marylands/frames and turkey wings/necks without any worry - I am however a little relucant to feed chicken necks or wings as I think my new boy Lughie would inhale them ;) I think in a sense Australia is behind... but in a good way Also for me mincing bones is processing them I like to feed as close to the natural way as possible. What bones are you feeding your weims oceanaussi? FTPO, Laffi used to inhale chicken necks when she was a pup! So I fed her only frozen large bones at the beginning to teach her to chew properly. Now I can give her a chicken neck and she chews it nicely :p
-
Interesting, what problems did they see to make their attitudes change, Oceanaussie? I think we'd be hiding our heads in the sand to claim that dogs never choke on raw, or never get bone impactions from raw, or perforated guts, or salmonellosis etc. These things undoubtedly do happen to some dogs. But the more important question is whether raw has overall health benefits compared to kibble (which of course also has risks - periodontal disease, the risk that it lacks any nutrient not included in "AAFCO" profiles, choking on kibble bits, etc). Also I believe that we need to be sensible in recommending which dogs be fed raw - dogs on medication that might reduce stomach acid, for example, or dogs suffering from severe immunosuppression, are prime candidates for a home made cooked diet instead of a raw one. JMO. Absolutely! There are risks involved in everything we do. We just need to make educated decisions and take calculated risks.

I lived in Poland for 17 years, France for 6 years, US for 6 years and now in Australia for 2.5 years. I have found it very interesting how people's attitudes towards food change in all these countries. Australia wins heads down when it comes to promoting healthy and natural way... (at least the experience I have had). US is the kingdom of fastfoods. Europe is somewhere in the middle, catching up to US much faster than Australia. Most of the people in US would laugh at you it you told them you want to feed raw food to your dogs. They really believe that processed foods are the way to go. This mentality spread really fast with the propaganda of the dry foods around the world (most of them are owned by american companies). Wolves evolved to eat raw meaty bones of the prey they are able to catch. The main problems with bones are created by people: by giving the dogs cooked bones or cutting the very large bones into smaller pieces creating edges and giving access to very hard bones.
-
I think this is what people forget about (at least during the initial stages of feeding raw)
-
Wow sounds like hard work! I don't chop the meat... it usually comes with max 300-500g pieces that are perfect size to feed as one meal for the day. If the butcher gives me bones bigger than that (like a huge brisket bone) I ask them to chop it up for me. I don't chop hearts or tongues I did have to cut up beef liver once but since then I was lucky to get it in smaller pieces. Is the raw food roll BARF from canine country? If so I highly recommend it! I would feed it myself if I was still living in Brisbane (this + raw meaty bones). Why do you say you feed 2kg/day but would only feed 1kg of the roll? Is it because you would add RMB? How much does your dog weight?
-
What do you mean by preparing dogfood? Why is it taking so long? I freeze the bones (takes ~5min to put in plastic bags and in the freezer). When I process the veggies it takes me ~15min for ~2 weeks
-
I feed raw: sardines, mackerel, mullet, salmon and never had any problems with the bones. You might have to be more careful with bigger fish I think
-
correct and also correct
-
lol you think you will get arrested? human grade offal is safe to feed raw :D yep I just blend the veggies into one big mush and add some mince, eggs and yoghurt to it
-
Great selection :D I feed everything raw (muscle meat, raw meaty bones, offal and veggies). Dogs can't digest veggies unless they are processed or blend (still raw though). BTW heart is not offal, it's muscle meat.

Me too Good luck with it YG
