Any Help On How To Get A Dog To Feel More Confident?
laffi replied to Isabel964's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I found that clicker training really increases dog's confidence -
I will try to make her see it like that! Wish me luck

Well she is toy driven at home and scent driven in the park. She loves tracking, it comes very naturally to her and I would like to use sniffing as a reward. I do understand it's not a conventional: food/toy reward. I do rev her up like : "ready ready", and when it's over (play or training) I say "enough". I am not sure about letting her sniff before the training as sometimes she becomes even more disctracted if I let her sniff before (she just can't get enough LOL). I do let her run around quite a bit, hard to say if it's too much or not enough

Yep, I did try the movement with toys and tried different toys. She gets excited for about 1-2 min and than starts sniffing again. I am trying to build it up but it's been very very slow (I am talking months). Thus the idea to use scent as a reward coming from me and not the field. Btw I only use high reward food in training so it remains a high reward. At home she does anything for a little pice of old bikkie LOL.

I have been using them on Midge and they worked wonders ;) I am running low so I can't start Laffi on them. I ordered more on internet though. Midge is a new dog because of these meds and she says or if I had to be honest she says I didnt know you could get them on the net!!! Is it the same brand???? Try them on Laffi as well when you get your hands on them!!!! It took me quite a while to find them online LOL. I am not sure if it's the same brand, will let you know :p Yep, will definitely try them on Laffi as well!

OK, so more specifically I am talking about my 1yo golden. She is very playful at home (tug and fetch) but once outside she is a sniffer. We even took her to a tracking seminar and she was a little star ;) I want to do obedience and agility (and tracking) with her but she does get really distracted with smells. She doesn't play (much) outside our backyard and only works for really high rewards treats (so far I have found only two kinds that would classify as A rewards: cheese and raw meat). Since she loves smelling stuff (A+ reward), I would like to use that as a reward. ETA: it's more hunting sniffing than food sniffing. We live close to a soccer field that is also a bunny crossing. Once she is tracking a bunny (in drive) there is almost no food exciting enough to get her attention.

So I assume you can't buy scents in Australia? Maybe I should buy a pet rat How do you use a garden hose as a toy? I read about it too but found it confusing ;) Thanks!

LOL, I knew we would get great info out of you. Do you base the diet on the Lonsdale's book? Sorry ;) Do you train your dogs? What food rewards do you use in training?
-
I was wondering what are your dogs favourite toys that you use as rewards in training. I am esp interested with dogs who were not very toy driven originally as well as for dogs who love sniffing. I was reading a Clean Run special issue about motivation and they mention that some people use "plastic bottles or zip baggies filled with smelly things like rodent feces or deer urine (available from hunting catalogs). Why bother sniffing the ground when Mom's got better smells in her pocket". Does anyone know if these are also available in Australia? (and yes, my dog is a sniffer and I can't believe I am even considering that!!!!!! LOL)

bump? need more ideas how to make her elbows heal ;) (btw even if she has a choice between beds and hard surface she pics hard surface because it's hot)
-
According to what was said, you should use 13ml on the first day and 6.5ml later.
-
I agree with what was said. RAW meaty bones: necks, wings frames are great. I wouldn't cook any meat, always give it raw. Grains (like pasta) are useless for dogs and can cause allergies. I wouldn't bother with these. Not a lot of veggies are needed either. Dog food should be at least 75% meat based, ideally meaty bones. If you want to try natural diet, research BARF or pray diet. If you want pre-made diet feed a good quality dry food. Vets recommend what they sell, like a good seller would.

Barf/raw Feeders: What Would You Feed Instead?

I totally understad, but if you need a backup plan it's good to make sure your dogs can actually eat it -

I think Innova Evo is excellent but not all dogs do well on it (some get runs and upset tummies). I would try it first before you go away. -
woolies sells whole chicken carcasses (frames) meaty bones are the best: like necks or wings :D

Oh I see. Fish day sounds delicious LOL
-
Wow that's a lot of fish Is it everyday?

I think allergies are definitely a possibility, although she only scratches her elbows. Is your pup itchy everywhere or just on his elbows?
-
Thank you so much!!! I do believe it could be lying on the hard floors since during the day the lies on the veranda all the time. Were her elbows itchy?
-
Laffi (golden retriever) seems to have very itchy elbows. Her skin there is quite red and her fur is orange-red on her elbows. She seems to be scratching it quite a bit as well :D . The vet said it's probably a hot spot, however it looks nothing like one . Maybe it's a callus? Would it be itchy though ? Vet wasn't too concerned but she seems to be quite itchy there so I really would like to help her... Any ideas?

Thanks everybody, I will give it a go :D Sas these pics are great

We got a huge watermelon and no takers to even start eating it  . I was wondering to feed it a little to our dogs. Would that be OK?

Advantix covers fleas, ticks, mozzies Advocate - all (most) wormer + fleas Sentinel Spectrum - allwormer+ fleas Interceptor Spectrum - allwormer I would suggest Intercptor Spectrum + Advantix if you worry about the ticks, if not I would either use Advocate or Sentinel Spectrum (they are more or less equivalent so definitely do not use both).
