Is This An Ok Diet For My Puppy?
laffi replied to PandaGirl's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Heart is not actually offal but muscle/meat But I do agree with you, it doesn't seem like she is getting the most balanced diet. First of al she doesn't need rice, pasta or any other grains. Raw meaty bones would be the best because you need to have the right balance of phosphors and calcium. Meat contains phosphorous and bones contain calcium. There is heaps of threads about raw diet and about good dry food on DOL. -
Laffi, Where did your bloods go to be tested? Was it Vetpath? $65.00 seems really cheap It was done at Animal Options (Ormeau QLD)

I suggest you hurry up coz the new 8 week course starts this Sun. (and yes I train there and I recommend it highly) I haven't been for a couple of weeks - how have you and your puppies been going? We are good The mock agility trial we had a week ago was great fun! Such a pity you missed it We are contemplating coming to the frisbee comp this Sunday. Are you going?

I would say you can do two things: - try to intimidate the dog by growling at him, or telling her off, taking her food (etc) the dog will probably stop growling however it will also feel more uncomfortable having you around when she is with her bone so basically what you achieved is a dog that doesn't growl, knows that he can't trust you near her food and will not give you any warning before biting if he really feels threatened or you can condition your dog to trust you, to know that it's OK when you are around her food and that good things can happen (like getting treats for temporarily giving you the bone) this way the dog trusts you, is more confident and doesn't feel a need to protect anything from you because you are a fair leader

Really Reliable Recall Dvd
laffi replied to trishalouise's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Yeah it does help!! How long did it take to get to you? I took less than 2 weeks I think. I think the DVD is great but it's definitely not a quick solution fix. -

I got it from dogwise.com so I guess that doesn't really help you since it's an american site. -

Has anyone read it? Would you recommend it?

Same here. I love seeing my dogs learn new things. I think it's important to add that you can't really train/teach your dog by only going to a club. You have to practice at home during the week. So it's not as much when was the last time you went for a training, but when was the last time you had a great, interactive session with your dogs. And these sessions are soooo addictive ;)

That's a great idea

To Clicker Or Not To Clicker?
laffi replied to Tatelina's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I use clicker with my working line australian shepherd. -
Invite a couple of nice kids over, armed with heaps of delicious treats. You want him to associate kids with great stuff. Start with one or two kids so it's not too much for him. Make sure the kids give him space and make the treats visible, but not sticking out arms toward him. Ask the kids not to touch him, just stand still and let him approach them (even if it takes a long time, you and the kids need to be patient). Do it as often as you can in different places. Than introduce more kids and treats.

I agree! This is very greedy LP

I think the closest you can get would be Evo, Orijen or Artemis Max Dog.

To Clicker Or Not To Clicker?
laffi replied to Tatelina's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
When I need to use a marker I always use a clicker: much more precise, consistent and fast than verbal marker. The marker needs to be connected to a primary reinforcer (food or toys). I don't think my dogs would enjoy me patting them every few secs when we are shaping. It would be more distracting than anything else. I use food for most clicker training and toys once the dog understands her job and I need to build up more speed and enthusiasm. My dogs are defintely not fat -
I am going to add it to my wish list :D Did you find it more useful than Morgan Spector's book?
