Supplements For Stronger Nails?
Toohey replied to Roxy Lady's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
My girl has the same problem. Hers is caused by an infection - a dog paronychia. It is not normal for them to split and treatment may be needed. Are the quicks exposed? Keep a close eye on it, and keep them clean as they can get infected and sore. Best take her to the vet and get scrapings done, to see if there is some bug causing it. Supplements you can try are Biotin and/or Silica. -
You seem to be changing the story a bit here. Was this a registered breeder? If so, what do their pedigrees say about date of birth?
-
So what type of vacc did they have, and at what ages? Just curious, as the usual protocol is 6 weeks, 12 weeks and 16 weeks, and they are not fully covered until two weeks after the final vacc. Where did you get the pups from?
-
Well actually they're about nine weeks old. They had their 2nd vaccinations a couple of days before I got them. Where did you get these pups? Did they come with a vaccination certificate? Edit: as has been stated, 8 week old pups do NOT need to be taken for walks. Apart from the risks of parvo, natural play in their own yard is plenty of exercise.

I'd soak the foot in warm salty water and see if that softens the skin and helps to shift it.

ACV is said to make their blood taste yuck to fleas (if you feed it). I don't know if it works though. You might like to shrink your sig a little it's a tad large, though very nice. http://www.dolforums.com.au/index.php?showtopic=58110

I have a well trained and well behaved dog thanks to Michael Tucker, and no, he did not use check chains as he did not approve of them. He preferred nylon slip chains. Lilli, PM me if you want more info.

Having Trouble Finding A Groomer
Toohey replied to Chaconne's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
http://www.dogs.net.au/carlandy/album1.asp Edit: just realised you are looking for someone to teach you. That would be a very individual thing and would depend on the groomer. Generally it is not in their best interests to teach you, as they would then be losing your business once you are comfortable to do your own dog. You can only chat to groomers and get their thoughts on the matter. Or, you can do a grooming course. I am sure Box Hill TAFE offers them. -
I wouldn't put a puppy down anywhere that unknown dogs have been, and that includes concrete footpaths. Concrete can only be safe if it is sealed and disinfected regularly. The nursing home visits is a good idea. My pup did that every weekend and was the life of the party There was a great thread here a while back about the many safe ways a pup can be socialised - will see if I can find it later. It's more about them experiencing different sights, sounds, smells, people (including kids), car rides, different surfaces.... if you have freinds with vaccinated dogs, you could take the pup to visit in their yard. I was super paranoid as well. I had bleach soaked bath mats laid down at all the house entrances for people to wipe their feet on. If I took my older dogs out for a walk, they got they feet washed with disinfectant before they were allowed to mix with the pup again! How's this for super paranoia? I have even considered getting some bleach soaked foam rubber to lay down at the front of the driveway for the car tyres to roll over, everytime I drive in (this is for when I have my litter) Bit of overkill???? Other breeders laugh at me when I say that. If you consider that many breeders run grooming salons and boarding kennels on their properties........ I guess it boils down to just using common sense.

When my latest pup came home, being summer, Parvo was rife. She did most of her socialising in a bag hanging off my shoulder I would not take a pup to a vet puppy school. I actually found a very good obedience school that ran outdoor puppy classes on a private property.
-
Sounds like Parvac. There is some info here Make sure you ask the breeder exactly what it is called so you can let your vet know.

Pointers On Right Feeding To Puppy
Toohey replied to brandybaby's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Raw meaty bones such as chicken wings, lamb flaps and lamb necks are naturally fatty, great eating, and healthy -
Have you tried a Coat King? edit to add: do you brush him? If you use a slicker two or three times a week, he would not get matts/knots.
-
You could try dissolving some epsom salts and sitting her in it for a few minutes to try and draw out the infected material. Is it superficial or deep?

Barfers: What Do You Add To The Meaty Bones?
Toohey replied to laffi's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I have been recommended this product by several breeders who find it is excellent, and am about to give it a go. http://www.petark.com.au/aboutus.html I used to use the Greenpet nutritional supplement to add to their raw diet. -
Could be just some discharge from where the granulation tissue is forming at the incision point, and coming away, however, I'd be concerned about the bad smell as that is not normal and could indicate infection. I'd feel better if your girl had a course of antibiotics.

Nutrience Suppliers (of Canned Food)
Toohey replied to Roxy_and_Missys_Mum's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Had a look at Pets Pantry for you, can't see any Nutrienece but they are very helpful and could probably get it in for you. I was interested to see that Eagle Pack comes in a can http://www.petspantry.com.au/index.php?cPath=166_169_2 Why do you want to feed them out of a tin? -

You can be sure she won't stop at speaker wires. Electrical wires could be next Supervise, contain, puppy proof, as PW said. My two year old cocker is getting much more trustworthy inside unsupervised, however she still has relapses IF I leave "edibles" in her reach.. Yesterday she chewed up a CD (A Fish called Wanda ), and today she "read" my TV guide and Vicdog when I went out

Massage some conditioner into the knotty areas and then gently brush/comb. Something like tropical creme conditioner which is amazing for working knots loose, or Aloveen.

Ideas For Giant Breed Vet Visit
Toohey replied to saintlysusan's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
My dog had a very deep grass seed removed from her ear yesterday. She was given Domitor and reversed immediately with Antisedan. The whole thing took ten minutes and she was back to normal almost straight away. The sedation/reversal cost $95, and I waited in the waiting room while it was done and took her straight home. -
This is not normal. I hope you have had him checked out by a vet? If so, what did they say? What is the pink medication called? Seems he might have a bug there that needs testing for, and possibly antibiotic treatment.
-
Don't give her Lucky Dog, I'd guess it's full of sugar and that's why she likes it. Why not feed a natural diet if she likes the raw meat? Google BARF and do some reading.
