  7. I'm taking my newest edition to puppy school. I asked the vet nurse about prong collars in general, she told me they were illegal and barbaric. She was very opposed to them-got quite worked up. However, I have seen an excellent trainer (one of DOL's favs) use them many times on many various dogs and it was very effective and not damaging the dog. I did use a prong on my middle dog when initially training her as she was a nightmare adult rescue dog. I don't need to use it on her now. I was shown how to use it correctly and have seen first hand they can be a great training tool.It depends on the trainer if it's used correctly and responsibly.
  8. Agreed! I have a Mastiff and a GSD and I really don't want to know how much I spend! Dry food, meaty bones, chiken necks, slamon, sardines, treats, heart guard, advantix, vaccinations, vet visits, etc! I know is probably a lot more than I should spend! Ditto I know that my four always eat well and I spend all my money on them I'm naughty though as I always come home with something for them food or toy or bedding etc.... I could easily cut costs and stop spoiling them but my favourite thing to spend money on is my dogs

  17. OT but so glad you got your doggies back Burkes.I relate to the soft as butter comment! I know a guy who purchased a Rotty to protect his truck and tools-they stole the dog! I also know a Rotty who looked SO SO scary but his owners came home and they had been burgled and the Rotty was home in the house at the time-either they knew the dog or were very brave or stupid!
  18. That was the first thing I thought of. My friend saw a guy hanging around her street on and off for a few days. She then went into the newsagent for 3 seconds and hears her dog yelping and the same guy is trying to drag her dog away to steal it. Even when she came out and started screaming at the guy he was still trying to drag the dog who was so scared she peed herself. She was so shaken up by it and realised there are people who target dogs to steal-massive dogs too.Her dog is a 73kg Bullmastiff. About a year and a half ago a family pet was also stolen from the backyard she was also a Bullmastiff. They went into the yard and took her and closed the gate behind them-never to be seen since. I saw the ads everywhere the owners even did business cards with her pic etc...They were so so sad. Everyone laughs at me and how secure my side gate is but a lot of large breed dogs have gone missing in surrounding areas. Sorry not telling you this to freak you out but do the padlocks! Glad your dog is OK. He is gorgeous
  19. So very very sorry. I cannot imagine what you are all going through. R.I.P beautiful Phoebe
  20. I have chainlink fencing and one of my dogs does bark at the neighbours &what she can see through it. I have had to train her out of it but there is a DA chi that tried to stick it's snout through at my dogs. The Chi would also bark at me and anyone else in the yard if he could see us or hear my backdoor open. The Chi's owner said she was being the dominant pack leader by not correcting the behaviour & staying inside the house ¬ calling it off gold! She felt ignoring it would make it stop-3.5 years later the dog still does it.Training may have helped but who knows. At least my dogs ignore it. I now have raised the height of the fences and used shade cloth and 6ft secured bamboo screening. This has helped a lot. Also, training my dog out of her interest in the fence and what's happening on the other side & working on her recall have all helped..
  21. I hope the little dog is OK. Again, a case of bad irresponsible dog ownership.Hope the owner is found.
