Warning signs have been put up on Bangalee Beach, near Yeppoon warning people about the animal deaths. Authorities are investigating whether the dogs may have ingested naturally occurring toxins in dead marine animals or if something more sinister is at play. The Yeppoon Veterinary Surgery has issued warnings on Facebook, urging residents to keep their dogs off the beach. “Symptoms come on very rapidly and have included vomiting, excessive salivation, diarrhoea, wobbly gait, unusual behaviour, collapsing etc,” the post says. “Treating symptoms is usually too late and result in death, so stay away from this beach both on and off the lead.”

Rahja, a border collie, was tied up in the back of a parked ute in Castlemaine when a man walking past hit the dog "with full force". Rahja later suffered a brain haemorrhage and died. Witness Jade Frost said the man claimed he had been bitten by the dog and was acting in self defence. "I [saw] him walk past the dog, and the dog just sat their tied up," she told Neil Mitchell. "I [saw] him reach into his car and pull out something bigger than a hammer - like a mallet - and with full force swing that into the dog's head. "And at that point I ran over and said 'What are you doing?' and he claimed the dog had bitten him." Ms Frost said she had not seen the dog bite the man. "If he was able to safely get to his driver's seat, get into his car and get a weapon - how can that be self defence?" she said. "I want to see this person charged." Rahja was taken to Castlemaine veterinary clinic where he was initially treated by Yvette Berkeley. Ms Berkeley said he was treated for a two inch open wound on his skull. "I've seen a lot of things but not that," Ms Berkeley told Neil Mitchell. After returning home to his owner, Rahja suffered a brain haemorrhage and died last night. Police have interviewed a 50-year-old man from Harcourt over the incident. They said he may face charges in relation to the Prevention of Cruelty Act, and urged other witnesses to come forward.

Picture by Cath Bowen EARLIER REPORT AFTER spending a night in custody, a 25-year-old man has admitted to acts of cruelty leading to the grisly deaths of all but two of a litter of 11 puppies in Kurri Kurri. Nathan Thompson pleaded guilty in East Maitland Local Court on Friday to serious animal cruelty, aggravated animal cruelty and resist arrest. Police prosecutor Sergeant Justin Watson said police opposed bail. The court has yet to rule if Thompson will be released on bail. Police would be seeking an order to remove another dog, which is pregnant and living at Thompson’s house. His solicitor said he was happy to surrender the dog, which belonged to his girlfriend. Thompson was arrested by police and the RSPCA on Thursday after a public plea for assistance. Police say another man placed an advertisement on a website for the sale of 11 bull terrier cross puppies last Thursday, March 5. Almost a week later they had not sold and the man offered the puppies, free of charge, to Thompson, who accepted. Police allege that about 4.30pm on Wednesday, the 25-year-old loaded the puppies in his car and took them to bushland on McLeods Road, Kurri Kurri. He allegedly began to kill them with a rock, hitting them in the head and throwing them into the bush. A witness, who was out walking his own two dogs, allegedly saw what was happening and confronted the 25-year-old, who drove from the area with five of the puppies still alive. The RSPCA were called and inspector Scott Meyers arrived to find five dead puppies lying in the scrub, and two hanging on to life. Mr Meyers took them to the Rutherford RSPCA veterinary clinic but one died on the way. The RSPCA launched an investigation and, with police, attended a home in Heddon Street, Kurri Kurri about 8.20pm on Thursday. The man allegedly told police four of the five remaining puppies were destroyed and the fifth was re-homed. Thompson’s solicitor told the court that he would comply with any orders made by police or the RSPCA with regard to the dog living in the house he shares with his girlfriend. ‘‘It is his partner’s dog,’’ the solicitor said. ‘‘He has been living with her for two years. ‘‘The dog is pregnant. He will agree to whatever will put the court and others at ease that the puppies to be born will be safe,’’ he said. Issues of substance abuse and mental health would be raised in relation to an appropriate sentence, he said. If he was granted bail, he would be prepared to report daily to police and live at his mother’s house in Aberdare, if required. His juvenile record was ‘‘not good’’, the court heard, with the most recent matters in 2007, and the most recent adult matters in 2011. Thompson would be seeking an intensive corrections order rather than full-time custody, the court heard.
