Just stumbled across this thread after a discussion with my OH, his boss is having problems with her dog be aggressive towards her boyfriend, so I'm going to write some of these down for her, so thanks everyone. My parents live in Redwood park and I'm not far from them in Ingle Farm, will have to keep my eye out for Cassie with her 2 boys.

Gsd & Using Treats In Training
Heidley replied to JulesP's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
My boy's not that interest in treats either, trying a toy at the moment to see how that works after having tried all sorts of treats (He is a GSD) -

I'll have to keep and eye out for it next time I'm at the bookshop -
I think it's just a matter of persisiting and making it a positive experience for the little guy, I agree OH might have to be banned from car trips for a bit until the pup has settled a bit! He's a spunky looking GSD

I think it's different for everyone, so here's what we did. We wanted a pet puppy but our boy turned out to be something the breeder feels is worth showing so with their assistance and guidance we have started showing him. My OH and I are total novices at this. Initally our breeder entered and paid the entry fee as this is what we discussed when talking about showing him. Our arrangements are quite clear, we now discuss what shows are coming up and what to enter, our breeder handles on the day and we do most of the training, pay for show entries etc. and we can enter other shows for our own practice if we want to. We feel very comfortable with the arrangement but only as we have kept clear communication throughout. Cheers, Heidley

It's an exciting and daunting time bringing a puppy home if you haven't done it before. She sounds like a normal puppy to me, she has just lost her litter mates and so wants to be around her new litter mates as in the 2 of you. When leaving her give her a treat of some kind, stuffed kong, bones etc and don't make a fuss about leaving. Leave her for 10 minutes on her own, lots of praise if she's quite. The first few weeks can be a little tricky, have a look around the forum there are heaps of threads with lots of information, there's also a GSD thread in the general breed sub forum area, pop in there and say hi! Cheers, Heidley

If it's smelly could be an ear infection or mites. Is the ear red? I think it might be best to consut your vet.

You should be able to get most of the different brands of kibble at a pet supplies store, some places stock such a huge range can end up quite confusing but it's a good place to compare prices if money is tight

Thanks Kermat

Wow thank goodness I stumbled across this thread. I have been going to obedience classess for the last 4 weeks. Yesterday my just 6 month old GSD pup was misbehaving so badly, I felt like a complete loser I have been doing the obedience class routines at home for the last 4 weeks, traninig at least once a day, mostly for short periods of 10 minutes or so. He is a strong boy and behaves himself relatively well at home and on walks although does still pull a lillte, treats in a busy environment just doesn't cut it. If you have any advice or links that could help me out as this is a whole new concept for me it would be greatly appreciated. Cheers

8 Week Old Golden Retriever - Crate Training
Heidley replied to hollythegoldenretriever's topic in Puppy Chat
Hi, When we brought our pup home, we were getting up twice a night for the first weeks or so, most people thought we were nuts, this is probably the case but we didn't have a single accident in the house at night. we made sure he went for a wee before bed. We made sure it was business as in we didn't play with him, just took him outside walked around telling him to weez which is our command, usually only took a few minutes and then back to bed, has worked really well for us. I always have water available for him, even at night, though he doesn't seem to drink it. Cheers, Heidley -
Roo said it perfectly. Used this method with my GSD pup and haven't had a problem. Cheers, Heidley

Just wondering if this started not long after daylight savings ended? It can alter their routine and with it getting lighter earlier it might be a possible trigger?

there are options. just depends how much effort you want to put into it. i can fence it off and the problem will solved...but i dont want to do that initially. We are well aware that there are options, as he spends lots of his time outside exploring etc we don't mind at all and haven't decided what we want to do anyways, but thanks for the pointer.

Our breeders kept asking if we had a nice backyard, I was somewhat puzzled why they were so interested! Now I know why, Sampson loves running around, digging things up, draging sticks around etc. Luckliy we hadn't gotten around to doing much to the year as we'd always planned on ahving our fur kid! The few plants I did have from the previous owners are either not there anymore or in a rundown state now!

I think it's different for Dutch because this new pup is at home in what was previously his pack's place, sounds like he's checking the new guy out. Don't forget to make a fuss over him to as puppies make it easy for us to fuss over them. Also do a bit of a search on here as a few people have covered this topic too and might have some good strategies for you. Cheers

Love Petstock, go there quite regulalry! Great range and the staff are friendly and helpful

Our pup loves an egg as a weekly treat, it was advised by the breeder and he eats them after having a play with it until it cracks

Hi beaglenewb, Congrats on your new puppy. Remember he is exploring a whole new world, he's left his mum and littermates, has the whole new crazy human language and rules to learn. The best advice is to be consistant and patient, lots of rewards for doing the right thing. We have had our puppy for 5 weeks and it has been a time of learning for all of us getting to know each other and teaching him the rules of the house, he still has nippy days but they are less than before. Keep us posted. Cheers, Heidley

wow doesn't sound good at all. We just finshed a 5 week puppy class at our vet and it's was very well run, the first session was all talking and we were told not to bring the pups as it's too much for them. The rest of the classes were a good combination of socialising and information, I was very pleased with it at the end. Hope your feedback about it is taken on board by the trainer.

Help! Out Of Control German Shepherd
Heidley replied to Bullygirl's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Hi Bullygirl, I really hope that you haven't tuned out due to the reception you recieved. I would just like to remind people that generally when someone asks for help and feels at their wits end you are already feeling very low and somewhat hopeless. If you were seeking assistance for counselling or advice would you return if the counsellor treated you this way?? I would think not. While I'm not suggeesting this is a counselling service this was used purely as an example, I would just like people to remember that a message is better recieved if given in a kind way rather than being told off! And it's sometime difficult to differenitate on a computer screen so choose you words carefully. Good luck with your boy, he sounds like he has a wonderful heart.
