Hi, will note on the SIBO issue as well. If it doesn't resolve we will test for EPI. It's just so expensive the test so we are trying to see if it's food intolerance first, if we can't narrow it down we will head off for the test. We usually would just go ahead with a test as we care for our pets greatly and expense isn't a prob but unfortunately we have hit a very bad patch of bills. Also spoke to breeder and they haven't had an EPI dog that they are aware of so far....but in saying that this girl's father is a recent german import. If it is a mild EPI case what is the usual procedure to control, diet only, or supplements/meds. I do know from vet the meds are limited at the moment and quite efty in price. Have also taken a look at www.epidogs.com Hi Best4koda I can totally understand where you are coming from with the expense of the test. I am still learning about EPI my GSD was diagnosed 6 weeks ago and we are still working out what is the right balance to treat her EPI. Our breeders have been around for 30 year + and never had it before either so while it's got a herditary element it's a little unclear how that part works. Treatment we are using is a grain free kibble- Canidae is available from my vet for a reasonable price so we have her on that. Also using Creon 10000 which is available at the chemist- human treatment works better than the dog specific product because it's a replacement not a supplement. We have also done a 40 day and counting course of antibiotics to treat her SIBO. Importantly we also give her a probiotic tablet to help with gut flora- blackmores one was on special so she's having that one. If you'd like more info please fee free to PM me. I hope you pup doesn't have EPI but if they do getting it early is key

I think you should test for EPI, please have a look at this site for more information- www.epi4dogs.com Your dogs symptoms sound very familar to EPI and not all dogs with EPI have dramatic weight loss, you dog might have more of an SIBO problem and mild EPI but it needs to diagnosed first- TLI test as well as for Folate and Cobalamin which can indicate SIBO. Hope your GSD gets better soon.

Hi Julzjc Just wondering what Indie's stools are like, I'm assuming as he's not eating there aren't many of them but if they are looking pale in colour like clay yellow and not as formed it might be worth having him tested for endocrine pancreatic insuffiency (EPI) this can make dogs look emaciated and while lack of appetite isn't usually a symptom it might come from other related EPI conditions. So sorry you are having such a rough time.

Been watching your thread Michelle&Zoey, so glad to hear your girl is on the improve. I have GSDs too and mouthing is all part of their development. What ever approach you try being consistant is the best possible thing you can do. I use the distract with a toy mostly as yelping got mine excited. Also if they start to nip while playing then simply offer a toy and cease playing with the pup until it settles and start again. Ear hats as I like to call them are due to teething, plently of things to chew on will help them go up and stay up

Looking For Fun Games To Play With My Dogs
Heidley replied to Heidley's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Thanks Swiss girl- those sound like great games Thanks Longcoat and Aidan -
Hi All, I have 3 GSD ranging in ages from 3 1/2 to 5 months. I love spending one to one time with each of them and playing games. I've run out of ideas we do a bit of obedience training, working on their show training and then I like to do a game, like hide and seek or fetch or playing with one of the interactive toys I've collected. But I'm really wanting some new ideas and thought who better than the DOL training thread for inspiratation! Thanks in anticpation

Chris Girling is very experienced with hip & elbow xraying. We have had both our dogs done there and our puppy will also have hers there when she is old enough. Noah's Crossing is very experienced with ensuring they have the right position. Another benefit is that they have digital xray so less time under anesthetic is needed as they can check they have everything right in much shorter time frame.

I know how you feel Deelee. We have GSD and people comment on how skinny they are, it does get tiresome but I usually try to ignore them knowing that they are fit and healthy.

Chris Girling has been mentioned at Noah's crossing. He's very open to discussions about what you want and why. Perhaps a phone call to him would be workthwhile and helpful in making your decision. I'f you'd like the number let me know

Dog Limit Laws Coming In Australia Wide. Update Info
Heidley replied to Christina's topic in General Dog Discussion
What new law proposal? I have yet to see any concrete reference to new laws. Just people saying that the RSPCA is making recommendations to councils. Not a new law a by-law from the Mallala council in SA. This council is change the by-laws relating to number of dogs to bring it in line with metro local governments. I have no idea if the RSPCA have been consulted in this particular instance -
Brilliant, thank you so needed a laugh! :D

I don't think it's that simple as the new by law proposal is for the whole council area and does not exclude the animal husbandry area. -
Dog Limit Laws Coming In Australia Wide. Update Info
Heidley replied to Christina's topic in General Dog Discussion
I live in the same council area Christina and we moved there 12 months ago for the reasons you mentioned in you original post. We attended the council consultations etc, noticed in the December minutes that the amendments that were put forward to change this amendment have not been supported by council. Ridiculous seeing as they are so proud on their animal husbandry area!! -

Alternative For E-bark Collar
Heidley replied to Heidley's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Thanks so much for all your responses. The reason I'm saying it's illegal here is 2 companies I've contacted have said they can't ship to SA as they are not allowed. K9 Force have you ever hired to someone is SA before? Maybe I need to look further into the legallities etc. -
Hi All, Looking for some advice. My 18 month old GSD has started to bark to the point it's bothering the neighbours while we aren't home. He is walked twice a day most days and I do a short obedience session in the morning- I will be extending the time spent on this. I was hoping to be able to use the collar for a short time while we are not here to correct the behaviour, any suggestions please.

Ohh Cassie, I'm so sorry for your loss RIP sweet Oakley :p

Just stumbled across this thread after a discussion with my OH, his boss is having problems with her dog be aggressive towards her boyfriend, so I'm going to write some of these down for her, so thanks everyone. My parents live in Redwood park and I'm not far from them in Ingle Farm, will have to keep my eye out for Cassie with her 2 boys. Yes! Keep an eye out for us! Can't miss me when I'm walking those two! ;) If you ever see me please stop and introduce yourself, I won't mind at all! And the boys always love meeting new people and dogs! :D For sure, your boys look so cuddly too
