  1. I posted a thread a while back on how to radically reduce your pets annual medication costs. You can read the the thread here. Cheers, Peter D
  2. Hey quesada, this probably doesn't help but I feel your loss. Peter D
  3. I only ever lose my temper on Dogzonline ; I never lose my temper training Hobbes. He has frustrated me at times, and he knows that . I think now that I'm the one who stuffs things up with my input from my end of the lead. I'm getting better; in time, I will be perfectly trained and not a bad trainer Peter D
  4. whoohoo!! Your mum is not allowed another dog?!? Sheesh!! What sort of nasty little fascists run her retirement village? What do we all have to look forward to when we retire? Not a lot it seems . I think that elderly people in retirement villages should be encouraged and enabled to adopt elderly rescue dogs. That would be a win/win situation . I feel for your mum, and Gypsy too. Peter D
  5. Hi Maverick you will need to PM me and give me your e-mail address, as the document is 83Kb in size. Both the 'internal' method (the one I use) and the 'external' method (the one poodlefan uses) are described quite well. As for firming up the stools, bones help cheers Peter D
  6. Hi Poodlefan No, I don't use your method, hence the need for latex gloves and KY jelly. I use the 'index finger inserted in the bum, with thumb on outside at 4 o'clock & 8 o'clock technique' . I find that I can empty the sacs more completely that way ;) I read that thread you mentioned; there were quite a few squeamish people posting there :D Peter D
  7. Ricey, never picked you for a wuss! :D I do it straight into my hand under a running tap and bath straight away. Wuss? Me? Never!!! :D ;) I was just following the directions :D :D Peter D
  8. Hi Charlotte pugs often have anal sac problems. When I was in my teens (over thirty years ago ;) ), my family's pet dog was (for 17 years) a pug. He had anal sac problems, and they were removed surgically when he was about 18months old. He did not develop faecal incontinence even when very old. However, faecal incontinence is certainly a possible side effect of this surgery. My brother has a pug, and as a joke Christmas present in 2003, I put together a 'pug owners manual'. This consisted of instructions on how to express anal sacs, with a box of disposable latex gloves and a tube of KY jelly . The instructions were all plagiarised from the internet :D and are quite straightforward. They come with the usual disclaimers about 'no responsibily for anything that goes wrong' and 'see your vet if you dont manage to epmty the anal sacs with gentle pressure', but I found them to be quite straightforward :D . I have to express my Shih Tzu/Maltese cross's anal sacs every 3 or 4 weeks and i guess I always will as I try to avoid surgery for my dogs wherever possible. If you want, PM your e-mail address to me, and I'll e-mail the instructions to you; it is a microsoft Word document, with diagrams as well as instructions. Cheers, Peter D
  9. bugga! he was such a lovely dog :D I feel your hurt, Chrissie Peter D
  10. Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaggggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh hhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I don't care who is right and who is wrong here I think that K9Force is a very well respected dog trainer, and he seems to know what he is talking about. I've never met him, he has never trained my dogs (more is the pity ), but he seems to make sense. My understanding of the 'Innotek vs Hugh Wirth and the RSPCA' case is that Hugh Wirth pocketed a few thousand, whereas the RSPCA had to forfeit a bucketload more to Innotek. Peter D
  11. Thanks for that link, it is going to be very useful I'm surprised that these are the only "prescribed inhumane devices" in the regulations relating to the Animal Welfare Act. I had assumed that cock fighting blades would automatically be on the list. I'm phoning or possibly visiting the RSPCA at Malaga tomorrow to enquire as to whether prong collars are 'prescribed'. Peter D
  12. Apologies Anne, I was being facetious. However, the Customs Web site does advise that it is possible to get permits to import them, so who knows? K9Force has a stock of them, and I bet he doesn't call them curtain clips  Cheers, Peter D
  13. K9: in small print WITHOUT A PERMIT! G'day, Eddy here. <stuff deleted by ricey to make this post more reader friendly  > Dog collars - electronic and protrusion (restricted import) Description: Dog collars designed to cause an electric shock, or dog collars designed to puncture or bruise an animal's skin. Permits issued by: Minister for Justice and Customs As prong collars made by reputable manufacturers such as Herm Sprenger are designed to not bruise or puncture an animal's skin, it would appear that no permit is necessary to import them :D :p :D My god, I love Government departments (not). Cheers, Peter D
  14. Hi Rusky I just want to be able to be pointed to a reputable source where I can read for myself the list of "prescribed inhumane devices" for WA. I would have thought that this list would be easy to find, but no :D . I'm assuming that items such as the blades that get strapped onto fighting cocks are banned, as are sharpened riding crops, and sharpened spurs, but I'm having trouble finding anything about these "prescribed inhumane devices" . As the RSPCA have the responsibility of administering the Animal Welfare Act, I presumed that they would have published (and publicised) this list, but they haven't. If and when I get hold of a copy of this list, I'll post it :D . Cheers, Peter D p.s. from your posts, I'm presuming that you are somewhere in WA too :p
  15. Well, I think I will start using Combantrim myself then :D Why swallow 2 of those monstrous Paratak Plus 35 tablets when you can munch on a chocolate bar instead? I'll let the bloke who uses canine all-wormers that he is barking up the wrong tree  Thanks to everyone for their replies. Peter D
  16. Well, I have searched high and low through the Western Australian Dog Act (1976), the Western Australian Animal Welfare Act (2002), and the Western Australian Dog Regulations (1976). Nowhere can I find any mention of prong collars. I did find this in the Animal Welfare Act: Nowhere can I find a list of prescribed devices :p I did find this on the Dept of Local Govt & Regional Develoments' web-site in reference to the Animal Welfare Act : Still nothing about prong collars though  I thoroughly checked the RSPCA (WA) web-site, as they have the responsibility to administer the Animal Welfare Act . Yep, you guessed it; no mention about prong collars :D I'm going to bite the bullet and phone the RSPCA to see if anyone can point me to something in writing that states that prong collars are banned in WA. I'll post when I get some info ;) Peter D
  17. Hi people reading all the stuff about worming regimens on the BARF thread has stirred my mind from its usual slumber :p . An acquaintance of mine says he regularly (like every three months :D ) doses himself with enough canine all-wormer (not sure what brand) to treat a 70 kilo dog  . His theory is that he knows that his dog is wormed regularly, but he comes into contact with lots of other dogs on a daily basis and he has no way of knowing if they are worm free. So he thinks he is keeping himself safe by taking enough all-wormer to treat a 70 kilo dog (he weighs 70 kilos himself). This is the first time I have heard of someone using canine worming tablets on themselves and I have a couple of concerns about it. *does anyone know if these all-wormers are toxic to humans? *as the human digestive system is a lot longer and slower than a dogs, perhaps to dose a human at the same per kilo rate as a dog would be a bit of an overdose for the human? I'm not a 100% certain that the guy wasn't pulling my leg about de-worming himself, and has anyone else heard of people doing this? Cheers, Peter D
  18. gemibabe, your dog looks fit, not fat. Relax, enjoy your dog . Peter D
  19. If anyone wants a prong collar, I think that K9Force is the place to get one. They only sell the genuine Herm Sprenger articles, for $55. Check them out here. Peter D
  20. Hi people a minor thread hijack; does anyone know if prong collars are legal in West Australia? My dogs don't need one but I have a friend whose dog might benefit from one Peter D

    Brax

Hi Chrissie, I care, like you do. Peter D
  22. Ok, I've done the research ( :D ), and the Wahl KMSS seem to be the go (these are the replacement for the KM-1). I don't want to have to stuff around greasing the internal mechanisms as one has to do regularly with Osters, and the Oster blades (which are, apparently, better) fit the Wahl clippers. Sounds like a better solution all round. The best price I have come up with is $240 (with blade). Has anyone found a better price? Peter D

  24. Loraine, on Christmas day I have to say that I don't know you or Coco, but I feel something of your pain and my heart goes out to you. :D Peter D
  25. Hi, I'm unfortunately a bit of an expert with anal glands :D Is there any chance that you can get away with only having to manually express the anal sacs on a regular basis? If so, this is probably better than surgery If you want, I can e-mail you lots of info about anal glands (be warned; it is probably a lot more info than most can stomach ). Peter D
