  1. I wouldn't breed from a bitch with hormone issues (or dog for that matter). There are to many pills to fix to many things and nature is starting to take a backseat when it shouldn't.
  2. I have 2 JRT's. Both are different personalities. The male is not so cuddly but does like attention and a scratch behind the ear. He is to busy for trivial BS and spends most of the day dropping rocks, lemons and acorns at my feet to get me to to play fetch. I have rolled my ankle a few times on rocks left at the back door step . The female is very cuddly. She is very much a hunter, kills mice, snakes (yes I hate that but she sniffs them out). Both are very independent. If you own guinea pigs or other small vermin make sure your JRT's are no where near them. They get on great with other dogs as long as the other dogs know the JRT's are boss . JRT's do suffer from the Napoleon Complex and will attempt to boss around even great danes. They don't care about the size of other dogs.
  3. Don't mean to sound crass but once the testicles get a bit of weight to them (maturity) they should stay down in the sac.
  4. livamol is fantastic for dogs. I don't use it anymore for the dogs because they are on a complete kibble (artemis) and no point oversupplementing, which alot of people do. I still give my horses livamol. Fantastic for coats.
  5. The worst dog I ever had was a mongrel xbred given to me from a friend in my teens (yeah that long ago). Not sure who the father was. Quite a few dogs in the area gang banged this poor little crossbred when it was on season and all the pups where different shapes, sizes and all colours of the rainbow. Anyway I couldn't put the dog on the ground without it being allergic to "something". She had subluxed patellas, was cross-eyed and was grossly undershot. Her name was Scratch for obvious reasons. Sure wasn't pretty either. Final straw was after spending another small fortune on tests then she developed a huge abcess on the side of her face..argh. She was PTS. Give me purebred any day of the week.
  6. Not sure that you are thinking of the right stuff, Whippets. With VAN Complete Mix, you put the appropriate amount in a bowl, add water quantity, and allow it to ferment over night (12 hours). Simple. The grain seeds do not sprout and even if they did, that would be way too long to leave it. When you've used that fermented mix with your dog's meal, you simply put another quantity of the VAN mix in the bowl, add water, and leave that to sit until the next day's meal. I found it very easy to use and I am sooooo not into playing "chef" - although I will do that too if it is for my dog's sake. yes it must be different stuff. The food I tried you had to let the seeds in it sprout some. I got it from a "green" dog food site.
  7. Is that the stuff you wet and let the seeds sprout and then give to your dogs? If so then yes I have used it. I saw no improved difference in my dogs condition. Plus it is a pain to use. I suppose if you are into playing "chef" and like planning food for you dog then go for it. I'm lazy and prefer to scoop dry kibble into a bowl and just walk away
  8. Depends on the dog. I knew trainers who coursed their greys that wern't keen on the lure. My ex brood bitches mother was a top racer and one of the best coursers in the state. Her name was Barb's Melody and also one of the best bitch lines of the 80's and early to mid 90's. I don't race dogs anymore but go to the trial track with my whippets to see the vet. I have noticed over the last 20 years that the racing greyhound today is a much bigger dog than say ones from the late 1980's and prior. I bet they carry more injuries than before as well because of their size. With that also being said, the show greyhound is a bigger dog again compared to the racing grey. Anyway back on topic.......My whippets could do the job they were bred for easily.
  9. I wouldn't say they are aggressive. More defensive than anything else. Defensive and aggressive are 2 different things. I've never had a snake come out of the blue and chase me. Most snakes I've come across would rather escape than attack. Although I'd rather not come across any at all but being in a rural area it's going to happen.
  10. I don't think I could ever paint a dogs toenails. That goes into the realm of cuckoo :D
  11. I wouldn't hesitate in calling them and tell them their dog is most welcomed when it's fully house trained, if you don't mind the dog being there. Otherwise just tell them in a polite way that the dog isn't allowed in the house. It's your house....
  12. Yup they have thin skins just like the whippets. Got a whippy here recovering from running past a tree (yes a tree) and a bit of stiff twig opened up her skin about 2 inches. Nothing that peroxide and betadine doesn't fix though. You just have to watch them when it's healing because it gets itchy and they like to chew. All my whippets have cuts and graze scars. My fawn whippets scars show up so easily. Love the colour but they mark so easy .
  13. Havn't had a dog bitten but this year is a really BAD year for snakes. We've just had our second tigersnake inside our back yard . One of our JRT's killed it pretty quick. Those little dogs are afraid of NOTHING, which can be a bad thing. She was lucky she didn't get bitten. I've kept the lawn short, cleaned up around the place and they still show up...
  14. Yes as well. 1/ I won't breed a bitch for the second time if she is: a. a bad mother b. cannot free whelp or feed her pups properly. 2/ Won't breed a bitch at all if: c. could not be bred without vet intervention. eg/ stricture etc. My first whippet was very well bred but had a stricture. I pet homed her. I would prog test a bitch using frozen semen though. d. has hormone problems 3/ I won't keep a stud that can't mate without intervention. Not including frozen semen into that equation. Or needs any kind of treatment for fertility. 4/ I won't breed from dogs with bad temperaments. Havn't had a bad whippet though. Just ones that don't have show ring pizazz which is different. Breeders tend to forgive to many things in their stock and this is where problems creep in. Same thing with the cleft palate issue. It could be foetal developmental BUT it also could be hereditary. Depending on which band wagon you want to jump on. I won't have a second litter from a bitch if she produced a cleft palate pup. Then there is the environmental issue. We have all the best foods, best technology and dogs (people also for that matter) are still just as sick. We have auto-immune disorders on the rise in children. Although the COI lovers tend to blame inbreeding in animals instead of taking the environmental factors into account. I really could go on forever with this...
  15. I got a food dehydrator, from Deals Direct, for dog treats. I love it. Was well priced as well.
  16. I don't know what the attraction is with the blue staffys. They are not pretty to look at. If I was getting one I would have a colour preference as well. It would be black. Would I pay extra for colour? no. edit: crikey 71 puppy notices on DoL That's insane.
  17. They could take it further if they wanted to. They don't need a written contract. They have paid a consideration "deposit" on a promise of a particular dog. It doesn't matter what was said AFTER the deposit was taken. You'd probably be o.k. if the person left a deposit on any pup from a litter but she/he has left a deposit on a particular dog. Best of luck with it all. I don't do the deposit thing. Way to much trouble, even with older dogs.
  18. You may make a profit with the litter but in the long run I bet you'll find that the money you made is injected back into your dogs upkeep/showing etc........and then some
  19. Doesn't sound like she is ready. Maiden dogs and bitches (together) can be a nightmare sometimes. Don't let him exhaust himself either.
  20. If I had a dog that old (10 yrs+) it would most probably stay here thus I wouldn't bother desexing. For anyone else it would depend on the dog, the vet and their equipment.
  21. Aspirations are the same as 2009. Try to get to more dog shows.....
  22. Dog food eh?? You sure you aren't building zombies? like that 80's movie "weird science". A cow with chicken wings maybe?
  23. Yeah I'm in the Artemis breeders program. It's good value for breeders and the puppy packs are great.
  24. I have started using Artemis Osopure Power and it has been great for keeping the condition on whippets. I was using the regular Artemis formula before but found it hard to keep the condition on them with the amount of activity that they do.
