Which Option For Importing Would You Choose
whippets replied to heroeswit's topic in Breeders Community
I prefer an adult. I imported a Newfoundland puppy from the UK in the 80's. He developed entropians and I got surgery for the eyes, desexing and he dropped dead on the table. Autopsy showed he had sub aortic stenosis. Of course there are risks with adults but there are far to many variables in a puppy for me to even consider a big investment of importing from another country. I don't include NZ in that equation because buying and importing from there is much lower in costs. -
I was looking at the website and the average price for a puppy ONLY (not including shipping costs etc) is approx $4,600 Aussie dollars (370,000 YEN)........nice racket

They are all crossbreds in my eyes. Saw a great ad at the vets ages ago. It read: "Almost purebred Golden Retrievers for sale". I suppose these could be "almost purebred" labradors.

How do they manage to put the semen in the fallopian tubes using TC AI ? From all the lectures I attended on surgical AI, that is where they said the semen was placed and the reason they do it surgically is because it is not physically possible to put it there by TC AI. Also why would you need to do more than one insemination with daily prog testing ? The bitch can only conceive within about 2-4 days after ovulation so if you are sure she has ovulated and the semen is placed correctly, there is no need for a second insemination. I do not know of any vet that inseminates straight into the oviduct. I would never let a vet try to introduce a small catheter into my dogs oviduct. TC AI and surgical AI are both deposited at the top of the uterine horn at the uterine/oviduct junction. If all eggs were ready for fertilisation at the same time then we would only need one insemination. Eggs shed from the ovaries at different rates. Not all eggs are ready to be fertilised at the same time and with frozen semen motility considerably less than natural (natural semen can survive up to 7 days) then I would prefer to inseminate the bitch over 2 or 3 days and increase my chances of a a pregnancy and/or large litter.

no sorry I don't Good luck with it all

I wouldn't do surgical AI. why? 1/ Not necessary when TC AI deposits the semen into the exact same spot as surgical AI. 2/ It IS a surgical procedure so it carries the same risk as any surgery 3/ It can only be done once. I don't see the point in doing surgical AI when I can TC AI a bitch over a few days. She has no sedation, no recovery and I can take her home as soon as the procedure is done. I also don't see the point in doing 1 surgical AI then following it up with TC AI. Just do all TC AI's..... The success rates with surgical AI is comparible to TC AI.

I like the new site. Obviously needs tweaking but not the "text nightmare" the previous site was.

I might give this stuff a go. Spot on treatments are doing nothing for the dogs. Sentinel spectrum is doing nothing for the dogs. Diatomaceous earth is a waste of money. It's like we have a new and improved muscle bound super flea that is immune to everything I toss at them EDIT ....Looks like I've hit a bump in the road with this product. Caution Do not use in puppies less than 14 weeks of age. Keep out of reach of children. Do not administer to cats or other species of animal. Give this medication with food. Do not treat pregnant or lactating bitches unless on the advise of a veterinarian. The safe use of this product on breeding male dogs has not been evaluated. Comfortis may be safely administered to dogs in conjunction with topical tick treatments and collars as well as heartworm and worming medications.

You can please some people some of the time but you can't please all people all the time. -
Racing Greyhound Experts Please
whippets replied to Kirislin's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Is it actually torn "dropped" or swollen (partial tear)? You can tell be standing behind the dog, lifting the tail and comparing one inner back leg to the other. If it's a partial tear then that will be a weak spot that will probably end up tearing completely if they rehab then start racing the whippet again. Dropped "back" muscle (what the grey trainers call it) is a career ender for most greys and the ones that do return will never be any where near the form they once had. I wouldn't bother with surgery if one of my dogs dropped it's back muscle. I'd be rehab'ing and lead work only. Don't use U-Sound or laser on a swollen site (if it's swollen). -
The semen is deposited directly into the uterus using transcervical AI as well. I was there when Dr Watts did the procedures. One day he deposited it into one horn and the next day he deposited into the other horn. He said it didn't really matter because studies found (don't ask because I don't know) that the semen ended up travelling up the other horn anyway. It was quite interesting to watch. All the hoopla with collection. When he thawed out the phial he just dropped into warm saline then draw it up into a syringe and deposited it, through the endo, into the bitch. He put a drop on a slide and showed me how lethargic they are then he put the slide on a warming plate for a bit, popped it back under the microscope and they were very mobile. He also doesn't sedate the bitches. He found he gets better results this way. The nurse couldn't stop laughing at my bitch, who practically fell asleep (standing up) during each procedure. A got the full ejeculate and that ended up being 6 phials.

Can you do a study on......5 minutes of my time that I will never get back?

I use to use Artemis but I did find it very hard to keep the condition on my adult dogs (Osopure Power) and using 3x the recommended amount. I use Black Hawk now and have done so for quite a few months. My dogs do great on it. I use the adult formula for pups as well. As someone else already said.....you will need to test which is the best food for your dog.

They do it here. My bitch was done this way. I prefer that method over surgical implants, that can only be done once.

Registered breeders engaging in this kind of conduct really does make a mockery of the ANKC.

if someone used one of my boys and produced a top winner all I can say is HELL YEAH.

I have no issues with a stud condition to keep what I want myself on MR and LR the rest. Their dog, their rules.

swimming is the best non-weight-bearing exercise for your dog. -
You owe them nothing. I wonder what the statute of limitations is on civil matters.

Dog Grooming Scholarship

I would have loved to be a dog groomer alas nursing has totally squashed that dream with ongoing back and shoulder pain ;) Looks like a fantastic opportunity for some lucky person out there. -
Unless it is a "big" show (specialty, royal, international breed specialist) I keep the bitch at home. It is to much hassle for me to take her. It's only a few weeks. It doesn't bother me if others take their girls on season, as long as they don't flaunt them about and keep them properly contained.

30 minutes to check a dog? Your boss must be slower than a wet week.

I pay $20 a dog for c3. I get pups vacc and microchipped at the same time and that is $45 for the two.

I had almost the same discussion in regards to techniques when I spoke with Dr Watts (a repo specialist). He said that the technique really hasn't changed at all over the years. The main thing is the post thaw quality of the semen and the timing of the bitch.

Yes and of course on MAIN register as well as the owner must be the person doing the litter. No, the breeding has nothing to do with MY vision for the breed nor would I demand that it be incorporated into my current breeding program. The breeder of the bitch has a vision and a program, it's not my right to state to them that they can not use one of my boys because it doesn't fit with MY plans down the road, nor would I have the right to state to them that their bitch isn't my TYPE so therefore wouldn't benefit from the use of one of my boys. It's not a case of whether the bitch is pleasing to my eye. It's a case of whether her short comings will or might be removed by using one of my boys. I must look at the whole package, but when breeding and trying to improve, you have to zero in on specifics and calculate if the use of stud dog A or B will help. As for my approval, it's not that simple...it's all of these questions, not just what the bitch looks like...don't forget, there are health checks to do and of course temperament must come into things as well. No, however the breeder must have shown a level of committment to the breed, and often that IS showing....if the bitch has been shown and falls short of a title...not a problem..if the bitch has never been shown, the breeder doesn't want to show her or her offspring, than YES it matter and I will not agree to just producing puppies. As mentioned above, there are more items I consider, I also ask the owner of the bitch what they expect from the use of MY boy..remember..as stud owner, I can turn a bitch down....it's also important to listen to the owner of the bitch and appreciate their side as to why they contacted me in the first place. Everyone has a different interpretation of their breed and path they are wanting to go. By listening to the bitches owner, often the stud dog owner gets insite into an aspect that they had not considered before. That pretty much nails it in my opinion.
