Pine tar can be toxic to dogs when ingested. So quite possibly it is the pinetarsol if she is licking the area after treatment.

Actually, I think it should be a two way street. I find your attitude to it understandable, but very wrong. Hang on a minute, what's wrong with me saying I decide who my pups go to. I am sick of and tired of people laying the law down to me. Like.......... I will require this and I will require that. I will expect copies of................ I did say cross questioned, of course people will ask reasonable questions and ethical breeders answer them. I always invite people to come to my home where possible and inspect the pups and see where they are raised and the other dogs that are raised along side them and ask relevant questions about the breed. I am so sick and tired of breeder bashing. I am also sick and tired of people telling ME what I should do as a breeder. As I have said my Ethics are above reproach. I personally believe that we have prospective owners coming onto lists and gaining a little knowledge and using it in all the wrong ways. When you try to tell them it does not apply to this breed they tell you they know because they have been told to ask for all relevant paper work. ??????????????. Sorry not this breed. Now does that make it clearer what I am talking about. Yep know what you mean. Had a puppy enquiry and they wouldn't buy a whippet pup unless I could supply hip scores for both parents and their grandparents. I almost spit coffee out my nose but didn't.

Why Does She Rub Her Face In Foul Odours?
whippets replied to bullyfan's topic in General Dog Discussion
Dead decaying things is like Chanel No. 5 to dogs. -
Test the pH of the shampoo you use. For dogs it should be around 7 to 7.5.

I have used rescue remedy on a couple of my dogs. Didn't work. Might as well of just sprayed water into their mouth.

What Is Your Dogs Resting Heart Rate?
whippets replied to OSoSwift's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Dr Jim Gannon (A retired grey race vet) wrote a very interesting article about the fast and slow muscle twitch fibre difference between race greys (I'd also put whippets into this category) and other breeds of dogs. If I can find the article I'll post it. There was also another article re the difference between greys and saluki's (who are much better over longer distances). -
Almost everything else on the supermarket shelf is imported ( from tomatoes to cigarettes) don't see why dog food would be any different that it would be made news worthy.

What Is Your Dogs Resting Heart Rate?
whippets replied to OSoSwift's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I'd say your vet isn't use to sighthounds. Some even flip out with arrythmic (at rest) hearts. Which is normal. -
Lexie won the group. She looked lovely. Don't know about the rest.
-
Either long skirts or pants. I usually prefer pants. Have seen some pretty hidious things when people squat the wrong way with shorter skirts.

I love my teamsnag lead. ....my precioussss.

Or a racing greyhound that has won over 100k in a short career and won the waterloo cup (don't know if they even still have that coursing prize) yet wouldn't win a place ribbon in the show ring. How ironic is that.

Is Banning The Selling Of Puppies From Pet Shops The Solution?
whippets replied to fiery_di's topic in General Dog Discussion
Yes education is the key. You can ban and legislate all you want. The area to target is the "demand" for byb and puppy farmed dogs. I wouldn't be surprised that when the demand does get low that these businesses orchestrate the media on the "perceived" negative health issues of purebred registered dogs. Well placed marketing using "so called" experts such as vets and celebrities (Don Jerk er Burke) to inform of the qualities of xbreds and health issues of purebreds. It has already been proven that some vets have ownership stakes in puppy farms. Puppy farms are big business and they will use pretty much anything in their arsenal to degrade the purebred registered dog in favor of their "battery hen" style bred puppy farmed dogs. Never underestimate the power of the $$$$$$. -
The worst dog I had for health problems was a xbred. She cost me over 1k in vet fees before I put her to sleep. In the early 80's that was alot of money. Hybrid vigor is a load of boo hockey.

I'd buy a pink lead if I had a pink dog

Is Banning The Selling Of Puppies From Pet Shops The Solution?
whippets replied to fiery_di's topic in General Dog Discussion
I also believe that more purebred dogs will be stolen out of peoples backyards should pet shop bans and puppy farms be banned. Why? because the market demand would still be there. And no I am not condoning these practices, I am totally against it. As with any market situation, there is a "need" for joe public to buy cute fluffy dogs through puppy farms via pet shops. Even with forums like these there are still masses of people who are totally ignorant about where these pups come from. Then you have vets on morning t.v shows and people like Don (I know stuff all about dogs but alot about horse crap for your garden) Burke advocating xbreds and hybrid vigor. So until the day current legislation gets "policed" properly and the government gets involved with media campaigns against puppy farms (which they won't bother with because it's not a big vote getter) then people will continue to complain about pound dogs and euthanasia, puppy farms will continue to thrive and ethical registered breeders, who do the right thing, will continue to be the pin cushion/easy target due to us having less rights under law than puppy farm businesses. -
Junior Kennel Club Of Victoria (10/07-2010)

I'm going with a feral baby and Newman, who hasn't been shown in 9 mths so I hope he behaves -
I match leads to the dogs colour. I tend to use dark brown leads on brindle parti's. The lighter the dog the lighter the lead. I have a tan one for the fawns and I'm getting a new one, made by a dol'er , to match my blue brindle boy. I wouldn't use a brown lead on a brindle dilute, it clashes IMO.

Tradesmen Can Now Use Their Dogs To Put The Bite On The Taxman
whippets replied to kenDOL's topic in In The News
Good on them for claiming what they can. Australia is one of the highest taxed countrys in the world. -
Yes it is difficult to have free speech these days, or an opinion, in case you upset someones garden gnome up the street. So says she with a 33% warning on these forums

Victorian Poultry And Kennel Club Inc 03/07/2010
whippets replied to Bilbo Baggins's topic in General Dog Discussion
I am so glad I read this earlier at 1am, after getting dogs and car ready for Junior Kennel Club At least I didn't get there and realise it was the wrong week. Yes itching to start showing again and also it wouldn't be the first time I turned up at the wrong show. ....paid for an ePass as well...grumble. -
It depends. I can have mother and daughter together and all is well (she continues to clean their ears) but in general no. As soon as they have seasons things change. I've got 2 bitches here that would tear holes into each other if given the chance yet as puppies they shared a kennel at night together. So no I dont like bitches together generally. It's disaster waiting to happen. As for desexed, don't know. I'd rather have 2 desexed males together.

Whippets and Greyhounds are pretty much the same in temperament (I own both). I've had a whippet fence jumper (scaled 6 foot fences in one bound) but never had a grey attempt to fence jump. Both of the breeds don't get that "doggy smell" that some other breeds get. I call them both "wash n wear" dogs. Both make great indoor dogs, just bare in mind that greys are exactly bench height for grabbing snacks . I advice against getting a puppy considering you work all day.
