  1. hi... Had a friend whose bully did this...turned out he was deaf. he did lose some of the obsessiveness of it, and lived to be about 15...still madly chasing the shadows of birds
  2. Ohh,,another of rozzie's oldies has gently gone over the bridge....thinking of rozzie, and Mr R.
  3. or maybe he IS getting protective and possesive, in the absence of your ex. no advice, except caution, and please seek the help of a professional, so that the pup doesn't get his wires crossed, and so that no-one DOES get bitten.
  4. Chicken products I am always wary of....keep it in the freezer until needed. Other meat....doesn't seem to worry the dogs at all!! Ours are a bit like Tony's ..they LOVE dead smelly sheep carcases
  5. hopefully something happens soon.... if it were me she would have been already at the vet. all sorts of things can both cause, and result from, constipation. paraffin is fine..but it is ONLY a lubricant. you may find the oil seeping out AROUND the offending blockage....check and see if there are any oily stains or shiny bits around the rear end. if you notice anything like this..get straight back to the vet...as it means what is there does NOT want to move. lots of liquidy canned muck ...yum!
  6. paraffin takes between 12 and 24 hours to travel through the system..it is not a quick fix!! an enema is obviously the quickest relief.... best done by the vet . Not pleasant!! Oh..paraffin tastes not nice....sometimes can be mixed with a little mince or canned stuff ( or sardines) If you syringe it..take care! if it is aspirated it can cause problems. Do it VERY slowly!
  7. rest and play peacefully litle girl.... you have earned it. Condolences to her family.
  8. yep! He needs to learn quickly and in no uncertain terms that staying with you is good, and being a hunter of cows is BAD!! I agree..please contact Steve at K9Force NOW ..before the dog or the cows, or some other animal gets hurt. As you alluded, he has reinforced the fact that doing this is FUN..and any 'punishment ' will come too late to extuingish this pleasure sensation. To avoid any slips..contact a professional.
  9. I think ( and am happy to be corrected) that , to protect against mammary tumours, speying must be done before the first season.
  10. hi... pups and adolescents do some play stuff like humping...normal. desexing ..as soon as you can now, before she comes in season
  11. Phoenix...I have mentioned this before, and someone else touched on it...but she needs to see YOU as the Giver Of All Things!!! so NO food unless it is taken from your hand No water either ( for a day or 2 ) unless you hold the bowl NO free time unless she is with you; etc etc. We did this with a kelpie girl who had , up until we got her ( we were supposed to shoot her for being useless), been well fed, kept in a pen, with food etc constantly available, and let out to run whenever.... she had NO RELIANCE on humans...didn't connect US with food or praise or comfort.... The intensive few days of being chief provider resulted in a very attentive and cheeky natured dog, who is now semi-retired as a worker, and who still has odd days where she is "not with us"...buut who has been a great help!
  12. may I just add, that if puppies are round-bellied and looking settled, maybe she just doesn't appear to have much milk, as she is only producing for 2. If puppies are restless and not looking round, then urgent attention is needed to help them and mum. What did your Vet advise?
  13. sounds as if all his instincts are in the right place, anyway!
  14. laughing here..our working dogs never have to worry about herding rags, or sticks..in fact they usually never even SEE a rag. they are watched when little, as to how they behave with the poultry and pet goats/sheep, also the maggies who steal their food the little ones who chase the chooks and annoy the cats, climb over the fence and try and exert "eye" power on the horse are the ones to think positive things of It is so cute to watch the littlies discovering their "power" Oh, and biting, playing tug and or snapping are all definite No-No's!
  15. if feeding marrow bones, have them cut in half, and scoop or rinse ( V hot water) most of the marrow out It is fatty, so yes, will make some dogs a bit loose.
  16. depending on food...my guess is undigested ground up grain. :D
  17. agreed! Contact a behaviourist, and let them do an evaluation With any luck, and a lot of work, he can once again be part of a "pack" in the park!
  18. well, he loves the outing, the smells and the limited interaction...the anticipation of all this THEN his space is violated, and he reacts. While he is in 'his' car or in the big park...he is confident. THEN once he is in "Their" territory, he reacts.
  19. As long as he has a few doggy friends, and some good human ones like you he has a lot to look forward to
  20. and isn't he smart!! getting mum to sit all that time with him, and fuss over him :D :p Maybe put a little warm water on the food to release the smells, or a bit of chicken soup....put food down, WALK away. Go back 10 minutes later and collect bowl.LOTS of praise if he has eaten it all NO MORE food til night time..repeat the actions. In a few days, he will hopefully see sense, and be eating well. (hopefully) In the meantime..lots of interactive games and cuddles, but NOT in the form of hand-feeding . :D
  21. Poor little thing I am thinking it is "Post Traumatic Stress" He is feeling very vulnerable, and cannot use his "flight response" to escape the perceived danger, so he fights. Simple. My Suggestions? Give the poor tyke walks somewhere dog-free to build up his confidence...let him play with his dog friends, and consult a good behaviourist before exposing him to groups of large dogs again .
  22. Bub....don't fret about the bathing...Hamlet only has about 3 a year! :D And..sometimes it CAN be diet related, and often it is NOT Depends on what he is allergic to! If a dog is allergic to she-oak pollen, it doesn't matter WHAT it eats :p BUT if the allergy is to corn,or beef,or red food colouring....then the food must be changed . Hopefully your dog will only be sensitive to one or two EASILY-FOUND things
