  1. Letting a pup have the run of the house is risky... what if she takes a fancy to a power cord ,or swallows one too many buttons or pieces of fabric? She would be a fairly strong girl..and could easily start ripping up stuff which is NOT on the recommended diet Find a 'safe' room, and fill it with the above-mentioned things..boxes, kongs etc. Sorry..I don't see humour in this......
  2. Poor dog... glad you got it sorted Psyllium husks are a nice gentle way to help.Because it is essentially a GEL, there is no harsh fibre. You only need a little..as it will absorb water from the gut and expand. It can also be soaked before feeding if you like...soak it for about 10 minutes or so in warm water, then use. The vet recommended it for Hamlet after bowel surgery..he said that because it is a gel, it helps to stop some things from further irritating the bowel wall by lubricating/protecting.
  3. Personally, I would not be touching my dog while he's eating.... esp if he's already growling as the others have said..he needs to see you as the giver of food, and this being a happy occasion also..keep eating puppy and child separate.. better safe than sorry. with our pups..I always start when they are little..with a large something..usually a bone. They sit..I give it to them then say 'gimme' or 'swap' and take it, with heaps of praise, and a small tasty treat. then they sit again..and I give it back. I do this with anything they pick up/bring me...thankfully they mostly respond, and it means there is no chasing after dogs with stolen food/objects...I am way too unfit for that!
  4. Hi... Due to her moving around everywhere now, and a spurt of hot weather,Poor little witchetty has a lot of stick-fast fleas... an occupational hazard here..and I usually use advantage or permethrin spray for the dogs. Today was a town day..no other one for about a fortnight..and the vet was closed!!! All I could get was some frontline... and I bought some capstar tabs, which ,apparently can be used on baby pups. Has anyone done this? Has anyone used frontline on puppies? I haven't...and was wondering. It NEEDS to work, as the darn stickfast are everywhere here in the dry sand...we get bitten too The rabbits, birds, cats and dogs all have a share...but they can take a lot of blood from pups Thanks. I can put a light oil on the ones visible...but more will just hop on as soon as we turn around ....how I WISH we had the big 'dog fleas' instead...SO much easier to control....
  5. That IS nice to read:) Thank you Erny for letting us see it, and ,obviously , for being a good 'ambassador' It IS an excellent place to discuss all things dog!!!!
  6. Hi..it sounds as if it is a worrying behaviour for you....... I think you need to video it or something and show your vet, or get a referral to a specialist vet.
  7. I am not able to see most of the amazing work in this thread... I have limited bursts of puter time..and an abysmally slow dial-up (28.8) so cannot afford the time taken to download them..they are too big I am also a bit embarrassed to put stuff in, as I am definitely at kindergarten still ;) BUT here is a friend's dog...removed from her very bland and brown house interior background... I'm happy even to have found how to put in the drop shadow
  8. I would agree..vet check first . You may also want to try something different....put her in the car..drive to a park, THEN take her on leash and see how far she goes. If she is unwilling to walk in a park or wherever...then you need to do some serious detective work. Has anything happened to her on a walk near home? Has she been frightened/barked at...... ? See what the vet says first. Hope all is well
  9. Please phone the vet!! A puppy not fully vaccinated with those symptoms..esp the weakness..needs to be checked, IMO. Just to be on the safe side.... Hope she's ok.
  10. Dogs are not humans...they are 'designed' to eat RAW food, with bones etc Cooking food destroys some vitamins and enzymes ..also cooking bones changes their composition and makes them brittle and very dangerous for dogs to eat. We have working sheepdogs..they are often fed raw mutton..and also have whole rabbits..kangaroo tails, goat bones/meat..they only work the sheep..they don't kill them That story about dogs with Raw meat turning vicious is an 'old wives' tale Don't worry about it. edit to say..any puppies we have start their weaning at around 4 weeks onto huge bones with lots of raw meat on... while they are still with their mum..then when they are chewing they get puppy biscuits with their raw food. By the time they are on their own, they are eating anything!
  11. raw chicken wings, necks etc are fine for your pup.... DO NOT feed cooked bones!!! Cooking changes the chemicals in the bone, and they become very hard to digest, and can splinter. By all means feed him RAW MEATY bones...all sorts..chicken, beef, lamb, turkey, but try and get him to eat some premium puppy food as well Canned food is mostly water..he is showing good sense in not eating it See if he will eat a small teaspoon of finely grated/pureed vegetables ( NO ONION, or cabbagey things) mixed with some chopped up chicken, maybe? The sausage & fat offcuts can be treats..freeze bits for later use
  12. Oh, Dear...well, that made the decision -making simple Hope he recovers soon..will the tree be gone before he gets home? Poor dog.
  13. Could you put up a visual barrier? A circular/curved metal fence, so the tree "disappears" from doglevel view? This would need to be done while he is out one day..he comes back, and the visual clues at least, are not there...... The fence would need to be well proofed against digging if he DOES realise the object of his obsession is not far away, and high enough that he cannot jump up... Just a thought...
  14. welcome to the world of itches! She may well have an allergy... to any one of a hundred things!! Food colouring, some grains, pollen, detergents/cleaners around the house, flea treatments,... can't be much help..it takes a lot of detective work to begin to isolate the cause/es Poor little thing.
  15. damn! Incubation for Parvo can be uo 10 days AFIK...so you are not out of the woods yet It will travel on shoe soles, tyre treads, dog feet....... *Fingers crossed for you* It may be worthwhile starting your dogs on Vit C...not sure of dosage,,,someone on here ? jed? has mentioned it before.
  16. can't help..but it sounds very awkward and painful Hope it heals without too much trouble
  17. poor thing..hope things settle after tomorrow.
  18. Oh...thinking of you...guineas are great company, and DO make the cutest noises. RIP Treacle
  19. Hi.. Yep.. have HER inside, in a crate or safe room, or if she is not allowed inside, you may well need to build her a pen/kennel, with a roof, then give her lots of toys and chews to occupy her during the night . As said, she is only a puppy, and a clever one at that. Have you tried giving her her obedience session and run before bedtime? Does she play with her toys when she is alone? OR, maybe your hubby needs to lock his valuables away, fence them in or something ;) !!!!!!
  20. Oops.... Why? don't really know... Possibly because the shoes smelt 'familiar'? the texture of the ornament bits felt nice on her tongue? Often toys which look 'fun' & interesting to a human eye, don't feel/taste smell appealing to dogs. try her with a treatball to hold her interest, maybe at that age, she doesn't have a long attention span, either......or some of the kong chewy toys? our pups enjoyed them..until someone buried them all
  21. Hamlet only gets a bath every few months. Our workers never get a bath, but they do swim.
  22. Hi.. swallowing them whole is probably not a good idea. If he/she is doing this... maybe use turkey necks instead?..they are bigger and need chewing!
  23. Can you get one of those barriers to use in doorways or at the foot of stairs? That way , at least you could catch up!
  24. Did the vet do an Xray? With little pups , it is difficult to keep them quiet, but your girl should be kept rested for a few days...no racing around with the other one, and no jumping. I would go back to the vet, or find another one. Painkillers are probably NOT a good idea, as if it HURTS, she will rest it.If she doesn't feel sore, she may do it more damage Hope she is better soon
  25. ;) Mitchell used to sometimes get treated by MY chiro :D worked wonders...he was just so much happier afterwards.
