Ok- I Am Ready To Be Criticised...
persephone replied to persephone's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Honestly, it saved MY sanity !! Hamlet uses one of those soft Italian plastic basket ones.. a size too large, so there's plenty of room for mouth opening/panting. He can still drink... and I can poke treats in thru the holes -

He is definitely fine! : I am using a walking stick at present.. so can't walk far/fast.. this afternoon he took off and dug almost to China after a rabbit .. he'd look up every so often, just to check I was still around.. then head down, clouds of dust.... wildly waggling tail.... *sigh*...... -
Ok thanks.

Boy- that sounds an interesting concept - or have I been under a rock? *goes to google*...
-
Oh- ok. times must have changed since I was around obedience clubs- head collars were only recommended for handlers with some sort of physical lack of strength... or for those whose dogs were chronic forgers-and who had very low neck sensitivity.... that sort of thing ...
-
A suggestion- it is best to NOT exercise dogs after a meal.... from my reading, anyway I have always given mine their last meal before bed... settles them for the night ;)

he is the biggest scrounge ;) for about a year after he had his surgery for foreign body ingestion he was not allowed outside the house without his muzzle........... maybe I'll do it again .. Arrrrgh!! next time someone offers me a puppy- especially if it the 'talkative and lively' one...I shall RUN -
What issues do you have with your dog that you feel using a head collar will help? Reason for asking is that you may not need one ... the issues may be able to be managed another way...

benadryl does have some congestion relief stuff.... but the steam/warmth would be beneficial - esp at night! make them a warm chicken soup! Chicken meat-- a few veges- no salt..cook for ages then serve warm... this may help loosen congestion as well .
-
have them in a warm/steamy room for short periods? get a vaporiser from the chemist? Did you ask the vet about decongestants? Human benadryl cough mix can be given to dogs.... and may help- but check with the vet first!!

Thanks all- it was a restless and smelly night- but he appears fine ! some one wrecked the repair I did on the fence- so he was out of the yard again this morning- but I haven't yet put breakfast out for the other two- ...therefore nothing to scrounge ! All our food is tightly packed away..... in drums with lids- but a gutsy barrel will find a way Thanks again for being with me last night -

Ours is always... but I have been giving a couple of the dogs outside the yard some breakfast- they are a bit lean... there was a hole in the fence -

Which is another reason we like it... I will never buy stuff like P*L dry food ever again... he is lying on 'his' couch, sleeping... thanks -

Well... he seems more comfortable.. he has done poo... emptied a gallon from his bladder, and there is a slight odour in the air around his bed he just brought me my socks from the bathroom...and expected something in return ( I am having a very late tea...as my stomach is not in such a tight knot as it was...) he is still a bit uncomfortable.... but isn't dashing for the water like he was..... Re: holding off on water..When Kieran was in trouble- the vet said they need to drink to help move the dry along....and to dilute the extra salt... don't know... Anyway- he will have a bit more now before bed in a couple of hours..tho I may just sleep in my armchair tonight! Thank you everyone... Oh- both he and I have emptied the rescue remedy bottle -

Glad someone else has those sort of dogs too . We had one old koolie girl... she was about 12 at the time..and she actually climbed INTO the food drum..ate until she was at bursting...and couldn't climb out When I went to put the bucket back ...there she was. She looked awful for a couple of days.... but was ok... -
This morning... about 11 hrs ago.. Hamlet ate what I'd left out for a couple of the other dogs... probably around 3 double handfuls of Uncle Albers.... I didn't find out for a couple of hours. he has been ok... but somewhat bulging.. I gave him degas capsules ..he has two doses, and about an hour ago, I gave him a MINTEC. he appears to be getting larger No vomiting, or attempts to.... he is looking for more water, which is to be expected I guess.. and I am letting him have small drinks and frequent... he doesn't seem too distressed... but now I am wondering if I should have taken him to the vet.... A vet trip is not easy... about 120 km.. half on dirt roads.. I would have to take mum as well- she can't be left alone ....and she's not very well...and there's driving at night...kangaroos etc I also don't , in my heart of hearts think I would put him thru the surgery....so it would be a trip to nowhere.... I am worried.. Kieran my Dane X ..he got bloat/torsion, and I had to put him down... he was distressed quite soon after stealing food- and had the rapid swelling, the vomiting of white foam... the restlessness.... it was awful. Please tell me that he just now has a gutful of nicely soaked food.... and soon he will have diarrhoea or smelly farts or something..... I just don't know.... Our other dogs often blow up after pigging out on lamb flaps or other fatty meat... then next day they smell to high heaven ,and are fine... I never worry about them. Because of Kieran tho.... I am so scared of what may have to be done later on.... Ok- so I am not a caring owner, or one who will do what is right.... sorry for that. I do what I can in the circumstances.... I hate being so isolated.. and also hate knowing most of the worst case scenarios..and I hate being broke, and a wuss, ..... Apologies..if I have shattered anyone's perception of me

...and be sure to read up on both breeds which make up your puppy- so you have some idea why she may do what she does !!

;) I hope you have a nice large SECURE puppy pen in which he can be left ;)Put his toilet tray or whatever in there..at the opposite end to his food/bed...rotate his toys .. Toilet training may be tricky , too- seeing as he can't go outdoors to toilet- he will learn that INDOORS is for toileting .... which may cause problems if/when you move house, and want him outside .

Hi- some homework for you ;) remember- the rules you make today, are the ones puppy will live by tomorrow !! LINK 1 LINK2

What a lovely and loving tribute. :D

With the walk- that can easily be done twice a day 3O MINUTES EACH ONE :p two walks.. but shorter. That way she is getting out&about twice... but still not overdoing it. I don't play ball with my dogs, .. but is this one session? around an hour seems a lot ?? remember to keep things c a l m around her... and have set commands for playtime/walktime, so she knows... this is good advice ,from nekhbet..

Hi.she's a merle!! Merles can do no wrong!! Ok- you have a teenaged dog, bred to WORK... she has a brain and body in need of everyday action/stimulation. She also needs firm leadership. NOT bossing... leadership. When you walk her, what does this entail? How far How long What is her walking position.. When she is biting you/your clothes... what noise , if any does she make? what is her body language? Ears/tail/eyes/ hackles.... and What do you say/do when this happens?..You said you use the water bottle.. but how> Do you not speak, do you growl, do you raise your voice? ?
