  1. teens of any species are the more adventurous and harder to handle!
  2. No. probably not all labs ( or any pup) will chew /dig etc.. but most do, and first time puppy/dog owners need to be aware that these things are part of owning an active, strong puppy. We had labs and a toddler- no problem.... I have also seen toddlers bite the dust as the resident lab youngster does a bum waggle too close, or leans, or just runs thru the toddler It happens.
  3. Ticks don't usually have a raw bloody patch around them.... do you have a magnifying glass to look closer? What does the 'bump look like? Smooth surface, rough? shaped like.....? Removing ticks is fine... they have to be removed! if you are not sure... find someone who can help. Sounds more like an injury.... especially since you found a scab previously...
  4. Good thinking has your husband trained a 'working' retriever before? Or hunted with a dog? It needs to be learnt/taught. If you are after a working dog, then check the bloodlines .. some are much more suited to it than others..Best of luck i your search, and looking forward to hearing the puppy stories!
  5. Hi Elle- I bet you are excited... and I hate to spoil that somewhat.. but.. a boisterous lab puppy and a toddler will lead to tears. lab puppies will chew, and dig,and probably knock your son over.... Lab pups are very cute.. however, they are also prone to several nasty conditions affecting their joints. It is very wise to have written proof of the parents' test results at least- so you can be fairly sure your pup will not have pain and suffering a bit later on.... As this is your first dog... I hope you have done lots of reading up o your chosen breed, puppy training/nutrition, and the relationship between kids & dogs. Below are few links you may not have seen ... 6. Hoping you can get an answer soon, and find some treatment to make her life more comfortable
  7. I don't think a behaviourist is needed...rather a good vet ..it sounds to me like an imbalance ..and lord knows what else ...poor girl - she must be feeling rotten Hopefully the vet can find something!
  8. What a gorgeous old face ! The first photo is a treasure R I P old Jenny....
  9. She is a baby still- she will get hyper- she will get anxious and confused, and her humping may well be more a sign of an anxiety response than a "dominace' plot! ;) I agree with this statement.. All it will do, IMO is make her hungry and maybe more excited I also don't agree with hanging around while a pup/dog eats...it is their time, to enjoy their food- not to be expecting you to be doing something all the time... If you want her to give up food/treats, then do it when playing, or training. have her on lead.. offer her a toy or something, then ask for it back. Take it gently and IMMEDIATELY treat her!! get her to sit.. and return the treasure... repeat repeat repeat...gradually increasing the value of the treasure.. and always giving her a worthy treat, AND returning her treasure. Having her on lead means she cannot make a mistake .
  10. Poor jinx- he was obviously needed somewhere else in a hurry .
  11. yep- the ringworm spores fall off in dead skin and hair ... so they will be all thru the house I had a couple once years ago... took ages to clear.
  12. Our boys pee in their water buckets :p
  13. Bruno- cheap & quick and effective? Spray or wipe over him(or just his ears/head) with a permoxin solution every few days .It's not blowies which nibble the ears..it's the little bush/stable flies ..and the permoxin works a treat!! It's all I use here for fleas and flies these days...works on stickfast fleas too! Our dogs are happy to have it done, as the stuff has no nasty smell - it also seems to have a wetting agent, and is taken up well by the fur. edit to add... AFAIK vetrazin is an insect growth regulator... it may not be what is needed for the dog anyway....

    Lab Puppy

So- you talk to him while he's crying?
  15. lindadiosa.. may I suggest you do a lot more 'constructive' stuff with your pup ...as leaving her to her own devices to chase birds all day may come back to bite you on the backside She may become obsessed...she may well start to be a noisy chaser..and she may well start to bounce off fences or try and climb trees. The neighbours will NOT be impressed She needs 3 or 4 FIVE to TEN minute sessions a day- that's all. throw balls/toys for her put her lead/collar on and walk her around the block...or the yard..ON YOUR TERMS! The act of concentrating on being well behaved is tiring...running,, pulling, chasing is not ! bring her indoors on lead (get a chain one so she doesn't start to chew it ) Sit down, and have her sit on a mat/bed alongside you. Give her a treat, or a chewy thing. Sit there for 5 minutes..and WHEN SHE IS SETTLED... take her calmly outside again.. Put her lead on. get her to stand quietly, while you brush her, check her feet/ears/mouth. All these things, done a few times a day will focus her more on you, will get her thinking, and be mental and physical exercise for her.
  16. Glad to hear of the improvement Hope she continues to bounce!
  17. Same here!Definitely not you at fault, here, BB Georgea is a very pretty little girl, bindi boo- no matter where she is from I am looking forward to photos and stories of all the puppy carryings-on
  18. Kieisha, how did you go at the vet's last night?
  19. Don't you hate it when they perk up at the vets? "fingers crossed for you"
  20. I believe all dogs 'should' be well mannered and be trained the same.....unfortunately it doesn't happen. Many owners of small dogs (A K A perpetual puppies) never bother with the training ,as it's convenient to carry/spoil and pick up dogs which are either showing aggression, or acting scared.
