Large Straining Dog (march Update)
persephone replied to spottychick's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
excellent- she is being encouraged to see what is possible - if she decides it's too hard, fair enough, but she is at least now making a start. -
Hi- to teach these things to your pup-YOU have to be good at it, and understand the basics of how/why it works. My suggestion would be to seek advice from a trainer.Having a trainer come to your home and work with you is a great way to learn and gain confidence! Do you take him to an obedience club or anything? That may be a place to start if you don't want to see a trainer privately

Large Straining Dog (march Update)
persephone replied to spottychick's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
It is sounding good! SO many people have not seen dogs who ARE well adjusted/socialised/indoor dogs- they just have no idea of what can be accomplished, or how much work is needed....or what pleasure can then be gained -
Airedales I have known are not wimps- and need a fairly experienced hand . Hopefully the work can be put in .

Training An Adopted Adult Dog - Advice?
persephone replied to alexandrite's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
You want to tire him out? IMO playing is not the way to go. I suggest that he needs schooling- make him work, and concentrate, and walk, and sit... and no letup..for 10-15 minutes. If he is excitable- praise him QUIETLY, train him QUIETLY.. use a soft voice, so he has to LISTEN.Move slowly..and get him to do so as well. The more you run around, and excite him- the more hyped up he may become- it's a vicious circle...... How long have you had him? -

My Hamlet is such a one he's still a crazy -
May I just say first, that this is not a very good plan ANYTHING can happen - a fright, another dog off lead.. a cat- and your dogs will just go into instinct mode Way better to have them on long chains/leads..attach the leads to your ankle or something..then you will all be happy. re: your dog- start off small.. it will take time. have a read of THIS and you may understand that when your dog does something- it is because he gets a reward of some sort ..now you can help channel that Same with the walking-- start off by sitting quietly on lead- then walking nicely in the house/yard... then out the front.... Off lead recall is a matter of respect and reward..and comes, IMO, late in teh day- when your dog has a different relationship with you. Some dogs are not good at offleash recall- ever-. I have one Hamlet(6 yo) will hunt if he sees a moving target. I find it easier to take him on a VERY long line- he can run and sniff and swim.. but never disappear.

Training An Adopted Adult Dog - Advice?

Hi Looking forward to seeing photos of your boy you might want to start by reading/trying some of the stuff on DOL - and elsewhere like... LINK and Link THIS may be helpful! and, later on.... LINK Playing chasey games is not necessary- why do you want the dog to chase you? If you want him to run.. then run him onlead, or later on, in a safe enclosed area , perhaps... Playing fetch- start off with baby steps.. offer him a toy- (have him on a short lead)..then tell hime 'give' and gently but deteminedly take it from him--IIMMEDIATELY replacing it with a treat and praise... work on this until he will give you things- then start the throwing bit. None of my dogs play fetch..or chasey... they will take things and give to other people- or pick up things/toys and bring to me when asked - but I can't be bothered throwing balls & such ..and I don't think they are missing out on much -
Update On Ruby After Splenectomy - Cancer
persephone replied to Dog_Horse_Girl's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Excellent news! -
He won't dehydrate Put water in a couple of different containers- in a few different places- but, of course, all in shade.... he probably finds the inside water cooler- so waits until he can drink there... if you are going out- put ice in a bucket bowl- and that will be cool as it melts... Don't know- never had a dog who wouldn't drink outside. Some don't need to drink many times a day- often ours will only drink twice..sometimes more, if they are racing around, of course...

No argument there !

wouldn't it be much better if the poor dogs were bred so that NO intervention is necessary for them to be able to see, for heaven's sake?

Looking to replenish the old bottle of ironcyclen.. anyone have a clue as to the best online option? Thanks.

Welcome to the teenage years! I am thinking perhaps he is now discovering that he CAN do these things Time for his own safe room/crate- LOTS of short training sessions, and longer ,disciplined walks.

Azzachazza- stopping the dog chewing without correctly diagnosing/treating the problem is possibly not the best solution It will still itch, but now she is unable to scratch it- how annoying will that be :D What did the vet say may have caused it? That particular area is the classic spot for a flea-based problem. The dog flea likes that spot- as dogs don't get a real good go at them there. It only takes one bite if the dog is sensitive...and then it's chew/itch/chew The more things you apply, without using the correct one- the more you could be irritating that spot Aloe Vera is very soothing on the skin.. Fish oil etc will help- but oral supplements take some time to work.

Was Someone Looking For Flaxseed?
persephone replied to persephone's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I was just buying bits& pieces from them- and saw it advertised -
Is this to be a permanent thing- or until treatment takes effect? Depending on teh cause- there may be something which can help her to not need to want to chew....

THIS might be useful for you?

Our dogs have not had any flea treatment for about 12 months. if we notice they need it- they get a brief spray of permoxin. Luckliy, in some ways. we have the stickfast fleas only. This means that they are easily found, as they live between toes/on ear flaps, and sometimes on belly. A spray once every few days in those spots- and we're done. Only ever in Summer.

Could This Be An Anal Gland Problem?
persephone replied to muffinmclay's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
The two things may be connected- what state were his anal glands when you were at the vets? I am thinking, if he does have some skeletal problem causing a muscle weakness.. maybe his anal glands are leaking a bit .... he could also have an internal muscle /tendon problem.... or something else internal which then hurts around his pelvis... It does read as a back problem at first glance- the anal gland thing may just be a coincidence? Glad you are getting an xray- but it may not pick up anything .. I hope someone can give you better ideas poor boy
