  1. Agreed ,with an oldie a vet visit would be a good plan.
  2. Do you look at him/talk to him when he makes noise? if so, STOP. I would not even be sitting with him. put him on a leash- take him to the car .. no talking/patting required. Clip him in- tell him, good dog .. get in the front, and drive. kep an eye on him using your miirror.. don't turn around or talk to him. Just drive ..... See how this goes. he is a kelpie. he will probably react to seeing all the movement Excitement and whinging is probably a normal thing for him ... the less stimulation he receives, the better , IMO. .. so keep things very calm- no baby talk/ high pitched voices, etc in the car. Just calm and quiet and no attention. Pups have to learn to just 'be'. They cannot have someone with them , paying attention to them all the time!
  3. He may have an infection in his bladder .Check that out first, and if the vet gives him the all-clear- then you need to find out the 'whys'
  4. Years ago when I was training labs- we had quite a few with those sort of ears - he could well be a lab , as far as I know .. I'm not the world'sbest breed guesser! he's a gorgeous boy!! And in great condition.well done!
  5. I do so hope that one day there is not an explosion of pretty feathers- cos that is the cutest thing!! Wonderful household
  6. R I P Kira - you went over the bridge with loving help. to LWC
  7. Hope it's just something simple, scouty let us know how she goes .
  8. That's a really good reason to have a vet check her out .. if you are not sure- then a check up will make certain She may be fussy- know that her Mum will give her nice soft food She may just like wet food more than biscuit ... Now she's older she may just be more sensible in her eating, and not hoover like a puppy does ...or she may indeed have a tooth/gum/jaw problem. Mind you, if she is chewing everything else , but is not keen to eat dry food- guess she just does not enjoy the dry food...or is not hungry enough...or is a slow eater. For the chewing.. it may well be boredom.. poodles are VERY clever, and need things to exercise their brains - like obedience training everyday, learg tricks, etc. Running around playing with a dog or a person is not really 'work' .She may need more 'work' to do, so she relaxes afterwards ..and doesn't need to chew to feel satisfied. She may enjoy having a turkey wing or neck to chew on ( separated from the other dog, of course)
  9. Scout- I would suggest asking a vet to check her out... it could be a few things from your brief description.. far better to have her looked at carefully , for your peace of mind
  10. Thanks for the update, Toohey , and glad you could visit and cry and share
  11. Unless he is not properly toilet trained- I would suggest locking him indoors every night :D YOU then know exactly where he is - he cannot learn the habit of barking at rats/cats/possums/jets/neighbours/neighbourhood dogs... he also cannot eat anything thrown over the fence/try jumping fences in the dark ! It is in a dog's nature to dig, to roll in human excrement, and pee on all sorts of objects- but these things are not acceptable in our society..and neither is any more than a warning bark ,in suburbia .So - we take steps to ensure these things happen only on the odd occasion . Good for you in keeping him in tonight, and I hope that sleeping indoors will help :D
  12. Yoiks! I would certainly be photographing /filming to show the dog's owner .. ( Can u film using welding gloves? ) :D I too am not sure of the cattle prod ..it may well send him running- but it may also aggravate him :D a bit scary - there by yourself with a large aggressive dog... I wouldn't do it.
  13. Everyone looks very cosy 'night, Jed, and those keeping vigil .
  14. s for you. I am sorry Leo had to leave in such a way. Run fast & sure over the bridge, leo.
  15. erny- I took 'safe' literally as in not toxic.....
  16. Oh- apologies- I thought he was in an outdoor pen . Bother I can understand your frustration. what about treatball things - set to 'genius' Not chewing, but thinking and moving...... Why not have a browse HERE?
  17. he doesn't 'have' to be occupied all day . He also needs to learn to relax/sleep when left alone When he's bored with his bone/kong- then he can just sleep.... When you are home ,I am sure he gets plenty to do
  18. Your puppy is not vaccinated fully yet- please do not expose her to areas where other dogs go a lot regarding getting out of her collar- if you use a martingale she will not be able to .. or if you do a flat collar up tight enough she will also not be able to! it is all your responsibility .. to set her up so she just CANNOT make too many mistakes
  19. and this is why you go to an obedience club- or get a trainer to help you YOU are the human- the one in charge- it is your responsibilty to TEACH her how walk comfortably on a leash & collar.. she won't automatically do it..and ,believe me, it can be done on a flat collar ... with you being educated- all sorts of things are possible!! She is such a baby yet- she has lots to learn from you. THIS LINKmay get you thinking as to what is needed now, and what can be done ;) The trick is to get information from different sources-- and after you learn lots, and beging to understand your pup- then you can use what works best for your pup. Pup/dog training is NOT "one size fits all" !
  20. Goldee- in answer to your question..ONE person does the deciding/training - the others reinforce it and...a HARNESS is something which goes around the dog's body. A HEADCOLLAR (brand names, Halti, gentle leader, etc ) goes on the dog's head. If you want to use a headcollar .. (and I cannot see why, on such a baby puppy), please CLICK HERE for lots of discussion on the use/abuse of them, and their suitablity. Why don't you want to use a plain flat collar?
