  1. I am wondering if it is a more organic problem ..like senility ...an eye problem, or a hearing problem . Ageing in any animal can result in all sorts of processes not working as they should ...sending odd messages ...misinterpreting what IS seen/heard/smelt .. There is also the possibility of a growth somewhere .... Pain can be a factor ..glucosamine & that sort of thing take weeks to help, if they are going to .Hope whatever else the vet is using will help with the actual pain . Is your vet interested in /a specialist in geriatric dogs? maybe a second opinion with someone who is would be a plan ? and sensible management seems a very wise idea .Well Done . Make sure though,Old dog is comfortable ..has all his usual treats etc ....& is kept calm ..he's obviously not feeling happy or comfortable .
  2. It's a shame you don't feel able to buy from a registered breeder In which case- I would say neither ,sadly . The information here may help explain CLICK HERE and please read this !! I think it's well set out . CLICK HERE No- we are not breed snobs ... or many of the other insults . Many of us (me included) have crossbreeds.... a lot of these were/are RESCUES Your children sound old enough to help care for a dog too, which is good news. Thanks also for letting us know your details . have you considered an older 'pup' ? Or a young adult rescue - already used to children and living in a foster home ? there are some nice dogs waiting .. already desexed/vaccinated etc.
  3. ..yes. Imagine she has ulcerated pads ... no shoes allowed ..but she needs to walk ;) stomach lining needs treating in a similar way ...very soft & smooth surface-to-surface contact ..
  4. How does a solicitor assess and define a dog's behaviour so as to put forward evidence and get a declaration changed? Question - as I have NO idea how this stuff works ...
  5. ..and I do hope you have made an appointment with K9 pro ...and have taken advice from them by phone . Steve lays out the most efficient and useful steps to take in that blog I quoted . he also stresses that arguments should not be started with council or rangers ... Building a nice solid enclosure ..dog specific ensures your dog's safety in all sorts of situations - I wouldn't hesitate ...provide shade/shelter/environmental enrichment /tough toys Dog has his OWN space ..where he has access to his favourite toys and treats ...he is safe, children are safe ..there can be no incidents/accidents - and he enjoys time indoors/walking/running whatever with you as usual . One of my dogs wears a muzzle when we are away from home ( we live in the bush) - as he will pick up all sorts of rubbish/rotten things . Muzzles aren't a problem
  6. Lactose free yoghurt, beef broth, soft and soothing on a bleeding 'wound'..poor girl... She may just enjoy drinking lactose free/goats milk? Some soft, flaky steamed fish?
  7. previous question merele is a desirable marking for dogs ... and many have been produced because of this , sadly only produced FOR the markings/colours . klw... take yourself to some meetings/shows & meet & greet some shelties & their owners/breeders This will enable you to much better see different lines & what they have to offer you ..size/colours/coat.....temperament ;)
  8. that's not good news at all.. she must be feeling poorly , indeed. AFAIK plain yoghurt is only mildly acidic ..less so than bread and milk and egg ....and nowhere near as acidic as a dog's tummy All I can suggest is that you get a couple of chicken carcasses , and an oxtail ..boil and simmer for a couple hours in not a lot of water with some carrot, celery ,parsley ( quite a lot) in it . strain , til you have a lovely rich liquid ..concentrated is GOOD ..as there will be collagen and protein and iron & allsorts in there . Keep solids aside ..when she starts eating ..pull off any meat bits to eat with vege bits See if she'll drink it ..or syringe it in slowly ..keep in fridge Sorry, can't be any more help.
  9. My thoughts too ... on a concrete slab , with a mesh/solid roof .
  10. If that's where the most suitable sire is ..that where you'd import from
  11. Well, I hope you have booked an asessment for a few months time .
  12. And what did Steve at K9 pro advise ? his new blog is spot on !! one excerpt, if you haven't read it yet . MY BOLDED words
  13. Sorry you lost your dog ..it's always hard. the cross you are looking to buy is one frequently advertised , As for the non refundable deposit , I wouldn't . With living creatures, there are way too many variables .. IMO they ask for deposits as they really want their pups GONE ... and a non refundable amount pretty much guarantees this . Ethical breeders will make an effort to match pups with prospective buyers ..and usually not be in a panic to offload pups as soon as they reach the magic age ( though they are most often booked well in advance ) . perhaps take a half step back;breathe ......
  14. and this young Red & I sat & observed each other for 15 minutes or so .....
  15. How old is Oscar ? On the days he goes off his food ... is there anything else which happens on those days maybe ? Cleaners, visitors? extra exercise? anything ? Is he overweight or ribby, or ?
  16. All I can suggest for you is to contact K9Pro ..Steve Courtenay . & take his advice . have a read of THIS article as well. I
  17. One of our euro locals late this afternoon ...
  18. ..too accustomed to the backyard ..THAT is the stimulus for his body to toilet ... ;) you need to teach his body to respond when it hears your cue word . Are you using a word very different to normal words you use ? Remember ..toileting time is all business ..until it's finished ..so .. all he hears is the cue word, conversationally ...it needs to be a word ok to use in public, AND one which is said in a pleasant tone ..also to be pleasant in the public eye ;) ..then gentle praise when he is toileting ...interspersed with cue word ..'Goood boy ..."toilet"' or whatever .... then a treat/play /cuddle ..afterwards My conversation with dogs here ..if we had neighbours ..they'd hear something like this : C'mon fred ..out for 'quick-quicks'.. (dog trots , on leash to a spot I indicate ) "Quick-quick...repeat, repeat , mumble mumble ... quick quicks ..... (watching dog carefully) then quietly ..good boy fred, quick quicks... you're doing quick quicks ..what a clever dog .... blah blah ... *sigh* We start with youngsters ..when we catch them toileting , we say our cue word ..if it coincides, there's a praise party ..then , before they travel in a car , come in the house , go to work (sheep/goat mustering) etc .. we say it again ..and they usually oblige . it will take a lot of practice for you ..but boy , is it worth it!!!
  19. Hi ..so ..he will go at home . I suggest you extend 'home'..as it seems he has learned to toilet in a place/to other cues ..NOT in response to the word used ;) try using the cue word in all sorts of different places around the house/yard ..ON LEASH ..so he toilets in a spot you select eventually ..upon hearing the cue word . maybe start with his favourite spot ..first thing in AM . put leash on ..long leash if needed .. and use ONLY the cue words repeat, repeat ..NO name... or any other conversation until after he has done what is needed...then treats/praise whatever is good When this seems to work.. move to other spots nearby for a few days ..then start changing spots ..front yard ..back yard ..out on footpath .... and so on ...
  20. That's a great update So glad she's feeling a lot more comfortable
  21. Good plan for indoors, yes! ..nice large pen with lots of interesting stuff in it ! here is one video for ideas
