Not Feeding Your Dog One Day A Week
persephone replied to jacqui835's topic in General Dog Discussion
You can also make your dog work for all its food ...... -
Best of luck - I don't think she should be home just yet ... but I hope I'm wrong! Don't forget to be absolutely scrupulous in your hygeine now ..and all her vomit etc has the potential to infect other dogs ...as do your clothes/shoes/fingernails .... Thinking of you and the poor little girl.

How To Get A Dog To Gain Weight?
persephone replied to Blakbelgian's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Is it ribby , with spine showing?Does it look really bony? If it really needs to put on weight .. then feed it meat with some fat on - lamb/ox cheek - for example . These people have just acquired the dog? My guess is that it will put weight on , if it is not racing around as much - a new ,more sedentary lifestyle may be all that is needed .Boiled chicken mince & pasta doesn't sound a wonderful diet ..even when combined with some dry ... -
corvus- freerange- fair enough .. it's how the animal is transported to, and killed at, the place of processing which always concerns me . Are all these freerange critters still piled into crates (chooks/rabbits) or onto trucks, yarded, forced up a race etc.. or hung on hooks while still alive, before being electrocuted or stunned or having throats cut? Honest query .. was just wondering if animals raised 'humanely' are spared the distress mass produced ones are.Does anyone know?

I hope they don't send her home too early , but glad she seems a lot better!

5 months! I would not be leaving her outside unsupervised at all . The neighbour's staffy may well be castrated, but he may still try & get to your girl.. and there is a risk of injuries , with her being so young

Oh So Sorry for you & your family. Run free Sophie - enjoy meeting all the other DOL dogs over the bridge !

Threw Up - Should I Re-dose Him?
persephone replied to allie181's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I agree- don't dose unless you know he needs it . he is only a baby yet .. he has many years of chemical exposure ahead of him these tablets are not a 'protection' they kill parasites in/on the dog . .. As he is eating mince & rice ... does he already have tummy problems which may have made him throw up ? Unless the tablets were especially coated ones ( to reach the intestines) you wouldn't see a tablet after 45 minutes.. they would have dissolved ..which does NOT mean they would have been absorbed properly ...just that the filler had been softened/broken down in the stomach. Either way, wait a day or so- then, if you have to, and have the all clear from the manufacturer, give him one tablet at a time .. over a couple of days - to be safe -
Whilst my language may have been milder , I probably would have also done a bit of a panic-driven yell or two I tend to get nervous at the presence of off lead , large dogs ..and adrenaline takes over!

hope she continues to do well

If the pill is inserted properly into a cube of meat/cheese .. of the right size.. it should , in teh throw& catch game .. just get swallowed ! Always make sure of two normal cubes .. then a pill one, then two or three normal ones If using cheese/meat .. just make a little slit with a knife .. and slip the pill in to the middle - feed out immediately.

Whatever you decide, do it quickly ... a bladder full of urine is both uncomfortable and dangerous .... Poor old boy

Poor old boy .. hope he recovers . It's always a worry when the oldies get ill -
If you don't have cats- permoxin works well!! We ONLY have the 'stickfast/rabbit' fleas here- notorious for surviving a lot of flea treatments ..but the permoxin does the trick ..easily and fairly cheaply . Also repels/kills flies/mozzies/brown ticks

The JRT ate dead rats/mice. Please do NOT use bait if you have dogs /cats. diligent trapping will do the job

If his anal glands emptied.. then I would suggest trying to fix the problem, rather than putting the dog outside. Anal glands are emptied normally when the dog poos. IF the poo is a good size, and hard enough.. it will help squeeze out the glands .Of course, diet is responsible for this - so perhaps his diet needs to be changed a bit? Anal glands can also easily be emptied regularly by a vet ,or an owner - once you learn how - only takes a minute .

No need for war Buy covers for the cars! :)That's the easiest - also stops cat pawprints/urine spray from strays, and dust! One way to stop the swallows ( who will keep your place free of mozzies etc ) is not the prettiest, but it works. along the struts in the shed- between them & the roof..esp in the angles/joins.. you need to place crumpled up bird net ..pack it in- so there is nowhere for them to build nests. I do ours with the net on a long pole...

How often do you change their bedding, and what do you wash it in? Is their hair trimmed at all? When were their anal glands checked last? What is in the yard? lawn?dirt?paving? Smelly dog can be all sorts of things..from the need for clean new beds, to a yeast infection, to seeping anal glands, to dirty feet ..to all sorts of other problems .A bit hard to diagnose on a forum

They will- cos they really look a 'couple'
