if you trained your previous dog with no problems, and didn't use a crate .. there is no real reason to start , IMO. I have never used one. they are useful tools... they can help with housetraining ,and provide puppies with a spot to be out of the way and safe ..the training is also useful for when pup/dog needs to stay /travel/be in hospital. it's up to you

there is no 100% guarantee ... Toydog's post was excellent. Vitamins won't really help ... and his knees may get worse. They may also get better ! supplements like glucosamine will provide help for the joints ..and are a good idea if you are concerned, get a referral to a specialist vet , one who deals with these bone/joint problems every day - then there will be much less guessing . In the meantime, keep him lean, walk him regularly, swim him if you can , and enjoy him :D

reminds me of my little girl , Wreckit , who was a mini foxie X dachsie (we think) with legs so short! She was a terrific sheepdog in yards & trucks . That little chi looked so happy and focussed - lovely to see!

So many questions - and so many possibilities What were his living conditions at the breeders? When was he separated from his mother/littermates? What temperament do his parents have? What does his day consist of? exercise/training/games/where he spends time ,etc What is his general behaviour in the room with you , on leash, travelling in the car, when he's eating? How are you toilet training him? and this will be doing nothing to alleviate any anxiety he has I also like to teach any pups that bangs/crashes /machinery noises are something pleasant ... not to be scared of . I am not a fan of walking a dog who suddenly hits the deck or gets anxious when they hear a loud noise ;) Something to consider .. You said his crate training went backwards when your partner became redundant. Does the pup enjoy spending time with your partner? Does you partner do some of the training with the pup? Does your partner do the crate training too? Does your partner feed the pup?

luxating patella is not uncommon. What treatment does your vet suggest? Your pup is not very old is it? What are his symptoms? Well done on contacting teh breeder pet insurance... as you already have a diagnosis- and the pup was possibly born with it - pet insurance may not cover it now .

Adopted 12 Month Old Female Housetraining Issues
persephone replied to Oskar & Zsa Zsa's topic in Puppy Chat
it may be that she has an infection ... perhaps consider a vet check . -
So sorry he had a lovely life with you ..and looked a gorgeous boy.

yep- leave collar on .. feed pup- or give her some special treats or a nice bone .. and ignore her! If your mum fusses over her when she looks like that - or goes & takes the collar off - she is reinforcing the behaviour ;) Just leave it on ..... take it off when puppy is sleeping

Ear Infection - Narrow Ear Canal - Ear Flush...

Good plan -
he's playing ! he can't dig outside anywhere.. or play in puddles , or explore.. so water provides a wonderful play substance. You can always get him a different drink vessel... a long and narrow one .. or one which is slightly suspended...

You both fought so hard ........ I am so very sorry you were not there to hold him and wish him a safe journey ... he was indeed special , and it was a privilege to share the journey thru D O L . A for you, and for the kids . Thinking of you .

A Nice Relaxing Walk On The Beach - Not
persephone replied to flame ryder's topic in General Dog Discussion
Hunting days don't really work Foxes are notoriously difficult to shoot in areas where they have cover ..and sand dunes would make it dangerous. I would be using a long lead AND a good muzzzle ...and stick to the water's edge , where the tide cleans the beach . It only takes a second for a dog to grab a bait .(often just a chicken wingtip) IF teh baits are done properly, tho, the location should be marked, and the baits buried ...to avoid crows etc picking them up & dropping them elsewhere , and to limit them being taken by non target species. -
poor little pup- she has no idea what's going on . ignore her ..and don't ask her to do things.. but, as said, give her something yummy if/when she approaches/sits

What Would Your Dog Sound Like If It Could Talk?
persephone replied to a topic in General Dog Discussion
Like an american salesman on a home shopping channel trying to sell you a product ...and a set of steak knives! Hamlet uses his voice far too often ,and far too loudly -
Oh, Cordy .. over the years I have been a DOLer , photos and stories of your girl always popped up amongst the tales of the rescues that came & went - & your absolute love for her shone thru. It's been a long time to have her in your life..and the hole will be ragged. Thinking of you ,and Sean ..and baby William (and the gorgeous Genivieve). Run proudly over the bridge, old lady .. you carry a lot of love with you.

My old Mitchell was covered in lipomas at the end of his days .. because he was old ,and they caused no problem, the vet left them where they were. Glad all you scares were unfounded

We have done so ... we lost our wonderful worker "Dulcie" around 18 mths ago to snakebite. We now have another wonderful worker, a sister to Dulcie, ..also called Dulcie She is remarkably similar in temperament and working style .. body shape ..and general pig headeness, and originally had another name ... but Dulcie she became We have only done this a few times ..and it is a sort of homage , I guess, to the previous carrier of the name .

of course! :)

Are Our Dogs Still Able To Talk Speak Thier Language?
persephone replied to miss whippy's topic in General Dog Discussion
Yes. I believe it is a combination of many things - included the restrictions on dogs' freedom to be with other dogs ....often single dogs rarely get a chance to spend any decent amount of time with other dogs ..being dogs. Most activities are designed by humans. Obedience/sports/shows ... and interactions are supervised/guided. -
Scary, CC ! Glad you got it sorted I must admit to finding the catalogue intimidating.. and don't bother using it .
