  1. Maybe provide a layer of nice clean sand somewhere cool ? that way he is getting comfort and coolness?
  2. 'Silent heats' are a distinct possibility Maybe talk with your bitch's breeder- they should know their lines, and what happens with them re: seasons - and can perhaps explain a bit more to you? They may also advise you of which vet may best help you - there are specialist reproduction vets ...
  3. Hi How long have you had pup , and has he been 'picky' since day one? Are you using the same dry food? Will he eat exactly what he was getting at the breeders? Why did the vet advise against feeding chicken necks?, and how many are you feeding at breakfast? What chicken mince are you using? Does he get/eat any table scraps or anything else ? Tips & Tricks come once you know WHY pup is not eating ;), tho, providing there is not a health reason to account for not eating , or pup is simply full - the simplest thing is to prepare food ..put food down . leave pup and food together without distraction for 10 minutes. After 10 minutes, anything uneaten gets calmly removed. NO FOOD/treats until next mealtime . Simple - and usually effective. Dogs and pups can be trained without using food treats, believe it or not ;) it is a very popular way of doing it..and works well - however it is not essential.
  4. maybe get the vets to do blood tests to determine hormone levels ?
  5. being that it is in a Hospital, and that experienced Zoo staff are responsible , I would have no doubts !
  6. poor thing . It will be very stressed and bruised - hopefully it will recover. Lucky they dropped it when you said!
  7. I would not recommend trying to train your pup to be a guard ... or to neglect socialisation/obedience training. You have what will be a LARGE dog ..and the more settled she is around everybody, and the better the communication , the easier she will be to control .. Dogs which are poorly socialised may well bark/attack out of fear/uncertainty ..and this is VERY dangerous, and not in your control Dogs which are well socialised, comfortable around all sorts of people and situations have learnt about how humans operate ...learnt lots of body language and scents and language from different humans , and are much better able to be trustworthy around your family/friends !!! You also should not encourage ANY form of 'protectiveness' shown by your pup- whether it be guarding food/toys, or barking at passersby/traffic. It is NOT HER house ..it is YOURS , and so is everything in it ...and you allow her to share ;) This is important - as a very large pup/dog deciding what is to be guarded can be a bit of a problem. Lots of setting boundaries/training /socialisation will help grow your pup into an educated and trustworthy dog, who, because of your bond, will be more able to judge when she needs to step up and do the appropriate thing
  8. Agreed! Bones are things which can take a long time to chew/eat. any bone which can be swallowed almost straightaway is WAAY too small . I remember when working at the vets, we told cat owners that any meat/bones fed to their cat was to be no smaller than the palm of a hand !! Obviously much bigger for dogs
  9. ..and if you only have your puppy indoors, locked away to sleep .. she will not easily learn how to behave calmly and carefully inside/around humans/food/pets . Definitely head to the puppy forum!
  10. Ii guess it has to start somewhere?Mornings is often the time for coughing .. as the body starts operating at a faster speed than when asleep If there is some sort of airway/lung infection, then mucus will gather during the night, and need to be expelled in the morning, when there is more for the respiratory system to do. as I said- if it continues, see the vet ... Could be something else entirely.
  11. There are indeed different strains of KC .. so it could well be he has picked up some along the way. Just keep an eye on him , and contact the vet if it gets worse, or continues ..
  12. Take Care- sorry your girl has gone .
  13. Some dogs do vomit, as sharp ,hard pointy bits of bone irritate their stomachs . fair enough, too! try feeding chicken fames, lamb flaps/briskets. Turkey necks ..whole lamb necks as a meal ... anything that's not a leg, basically and big.Freeze also to slow down the chewing time ;)
  14. yep - what one specialist thinks/interprets may be very different to another! Don't admit defeat, or make decisions just yet .
  15. ..and that is not doing anything positive either ;) Just letting her know you are concerned about something ..and making her a bit uneasy . When accidents happen here - I just look/put dog out/clean up with no talking or anything different ....
  16. A vet check would be the first step. Jot down ANYTHING which has changed - food, health.,neighbours, family , sleeping arrangements .... anything. NOT being cross or anything would be the second - worrying about your reaction will maybe cause more problems . After vet check/blood tests /whatever .. then work on a plan
  17. Wow! Not just a pretty face That looks SO nice -all that flowing hair .... Must admit to not thinking of CC's doing anything like that, sorry
  18. A metal bucket .. with the handle tied to fence/verandah post whatever ... plus a clam shell or other large container . Y I have noticed that a dog in a pen /kennelled will upend bowls for something to do . A dog at home, getting several training sessions a day ... walking on lead at least an hour a day .. spending time chasing soccer balls /chewing bones ... may not bother as much . Some dogs do enjoy it others lose the habit once removed from a kennel environment.
  19. ears can look very odd at this teen phase - but usually settle
  20. OK ... so dog has never been on a leash or worn a collar? Dog will not walk on lead? Dog will not respond to "sit "? Was dog in pound because he was found wandering? My first though is ...be VERY wary of him being an escape artist!. Visit your vet on the way home with him .. get him checked/vacc'd and microchipped in your name . Do not let him out of your sight at first at home. keep him on a longish leash with you as much as possible ..inside and outside at first ... so he learns what's what, and you can praise him for doing good stuff/distract/correct when he looks as if he is about to do something different Housetraining will need to be like a little puppy - outside every 20 mins or so at first ...use a word ...LOTS of praise when he toilets Don't worry about the beach for quite some time yet. You and your dog need to learn about each other - you need to learn how to communicate, and trust each other and have rules and consequences set down. may I suggest you IMMEDIATELY start N I L I F ? It stands for Nothing In Life Is Free ..and means the DOG decides how much affection it will get throughout the day ....by doing what pleases you!! When dog is not being calm/obedient, it gets NO attention . No picking up- no talking to, no patting .. BUT when dog has all 4 feet on the ground, is looking at you, is quiet,sits/lies down when near you , doesn't bounce around on the furniture, waits for dinner - a hundred different things during the day ...THEN dog gets attention, cuddles, whatever Basically the dog's day is an opportunity to earn all the affection it can handle ..not because it is there, and cute ..but because it has shown you a behaviour which is pleasing and calm and is good mannered . Dogs will learn VERY quickly like this- cos of course , they exist to take as much affection as we can give ;) Humans, on the other hand.... often have a bit of trouble with this way of behaving - they are impatient animals ... ;)
  21. Hi have a read of this thread CLICK HERE for all the info on feeding raw. basically dogs need meat/bone/offal ..bones should be digestible and not the hard marrowbone type Your dog definitely does not need milk of any sort To avoid tummy problems- keep to whatever he is being fed now ..and GRADUALLY change him to whatever is your choice. Most canned food is not worth the money - he is better eating a balanced raw/fresh diet and/or a good quality balanced dry food. Dogs don't need table scraps ..and a lot of what we eat can be harmful to them - onions, chocolate ..... ANY dog can be fat, on ANY diet, if the owners feed too much . Simple
