It was a very useful thing- back 30 odd years ago - when there were lots of dogs free to roam the streets, and many used to just lie in wait in their front yards ready to ambush horses/dogs/people!! I would much rather a dog get a fright and run back home than our horses get spooked and cause a bigger problem! Nowhere did I imply racehorses caused more injuries to humans . I just commented that racehorses can be a very different temperament to a pleasure riding horse ...and again, individual temperament means that some horses react differently to others.

Racehorses can indeed be a different beast .Glad the girl is able to leave hospital - and hope she will have a good recovery. When we used to ride around Melbourne .. one of the horses was an ex racer.. he would often get really worked up, and start sweating etc ..but mostly was OK as a hack. One good thing was he could be told to chase dogs who flew out barking/snapping ..and the poor dogs would usually go screaming back inside ... ;) He'd put his head down-ears back and charge them !

How Did Everyone Come Up With Their Dol Names?
persephone replied to huskies4life88's topic in General Dog Discussion
Persephone was the goddess of the underworld, wife to Hades .. and was only on earth for part of the year .. it was she who brought Spring /good harvest. She was many things - including the one who loaned Hercules the three headed dog, Cerberus .She was the guide to new arrivals in the underworld ..and hostess . -
It is unfair to the pup to be inside sometimes and then not - she has no idea why - it's an odd rule. Why don't you want her indoors?

I think that much is made of injuries/deaths by dog because dogs are so much a part of human life .. entrenched in our homes and routines. From a caryard dog to a nursing home dog.. they are all around humans a lot ..and are on every street. A lot of injuries happen unexpectedly .. by people walking down their street, or in a park, or elsewhere .. and this is what scares everyone. These people did not seek out the dog who caused them injury - a lot of times they were unaware of any dog at all . Injuries caused by horse are usually incurred by people in the company of that horse - using/abusing it, or caring for it - so it is their choice to be in contact with that animal at that time. My guess is that it's rare indeed for a person walking along to be injured by an unknown horse - it could happen , in a paddock or somewhere, if there is a stallion, or a mare & foal ..once again, a rare thing.

Companion Animal ,the term, was being used well before that P group was even thought of! And , yes horses do kill people ...they are very large ..and have hard feet and sharp teeth and strong jaws. because of the thousands of interactions each day , and the many and varied insults people inflict on horses, plus the fact that individual horses may not have calm and solid temperaments - sure there are going to be incidents..and because humans are so much smaller and more fragile- they usually come off worse. I'm surprised there aren't more deaths these days, as so many people have lost the art of 'horsemanship ' . OK.. It seems from a very brief perusal .. that the most deaths caused by a horse was by: taken from HERE Much info of interest, which I will enjoy reading when I have more time !

Start doing stuff at home from day one. start off with NILIF that way pup learns how to get attention/praise/human contact by doing what you want Be very careful when travelling with a young puppy over Summer ... parvo time and he may not be fully protected.

Dogs Not Recognising Members Of Their Own Species
persephone replied to raineth's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Hmmmm not sure about this one . If it was one or two dogs who are not used to seeing different dogs, then it may be true..... but if it has happened on several occasions- different dogs .. then I'd agree with you - it could well be her body language . Happy to be corrected , tho I know lambs get confused by our koolies with more white on ... but they are just tiny, and going on size and movement I'd imagine dogs assess all sorts of characteristics. -
He is cute , indeed!!

Oh.. only 9 kg? I would be thinking maybe staffy x? in the first photos- I was admiring the red kelpie- and wondering why the other dog was in the photo ;) apologies. Looking forward to progress reports (and thinking your poor son will have his hands full while you're away!)

What's Gus crossed with? ...he's an interesting looking dog . Ziggy looks a solid lad .. and pretty laid-back in those shots You will certainly have your hands full!

personally, I don't believe in any external heating unless it's Winter and freezing . If pups are cool, then they gravitate towards the heat source ..their Mum ..and that is a very good thing! She sounds fine , on reading these further details Relax and enjoy

I always recommend taking a pup for a check up the day after you pick it up . This way , the vet sees it 'as is' , and if there are any issues, they can be sorted straight away .
