  1. A friend wishes to adopt a pound/RSPCA dog in a year or two ...and has decided to just take one straight from a pen at whatever shelter. I did suggest taking one which has been fostered ..and their reasoning was that these would be much more likely to find a nice home than the ones left in the shelter...so a needier one would be one of the latter ... This person has a dog ...so is not entirely a newbie ..but is not on my list of folks who would cope well with a 'problem' dog . What gentle persuasion can I use ..long term ? Thankyou.
  2. The article says dogs are to be used by Assistance Dogs Australia... not Guide Dogs ? Cute pics..and I hope the pups become someone's security and help :)
  3. MtS :) glad you can walk the dogs again, and that Missy is improving .
  4. WoW!!! That was a drive worth doing :))
  5. Not being really full of helpful ideas, I would only suggest that perhaps this is why he in a shelter ? Perhaps his other owners could not cope? It is so hard - worrying that he puts himself in danger ... and having to cope with a wrecked house :( I don't think I'd cope - you're doing really well . crossing my fingers you can all stay safe/sane until a proper professional assessment can be done - in the meantime document /photograph everything . damage done , his facial expressions when you notice him whingeing etc ...it all may help.

  7. This is Mum's old girl, Tiy ... she died late last year ,into her teens - she was 11 or so when this was taken . Funny how things go .. someone favourited this on flickr , and I went to have a look ... I had almost forgotten what a nice looking girl she was ..just a shame her temper didn't match :p and another
  8. , sorry ..... Crueller than what goes on in commercial 'modern/sanitised' fishing ..when bycatch lies flapping and dying on deck, where unwanted fish /mammals/turtles etc get trapped in pots or tangled in nets and drown? or crueller than dugongs and turtles being 'accidentally' injured/killed by propellers on tourist speedboats ?
  9. ...and why don't the council or RSPCA do the right thing and use a firearm to end that suffering right now? Allowing this suffering to go on, once it is known, THAT is cruel, in my book.
  10. What does one say ........So So Sorry . What a dear`dog , and how hard you tried to keep her happy and well.
  11. Also, bitches can get itchy 'bits' and scooting/scratching may also be an indicator of a urinary problem, or an itch caused by urine not draining away, or a vaginitis ..scooting may also feel necessary to a dog if they feel 'dirty' after toileting.......
  12. A kennel ..or even a large cardboard container , like that used for fridges/stoves.. with stacks of scrunchable bedding will work, as the smaller airspace will retain body heat, as will bedding into which they can burrow ..they then get a 'blanket' of warm air all round them. The thickest mattress in the world, won't really keep them warm in a large airspace ...... Glass & sun = Mmmmmm :) Glass & no sun = Brrrrr it loses heat really quickly
  13. yes :) Some of our sheepdogs have worked with broken ribs /toes .
  14. if you're feeding raw..add a little bit more high fibre veges and a lot more bone ..this will hopefully bulk up the poo and make it firmer , therby squeezing the glands on the way through ;)
  15. Vet, just to be sure , and stop you worrying . ..hopefully it's only a fluid lump after bumping himself hooning around ;)
  16. A dog lying down on a walk ..... this is something which needs to be checked properly .... . perhaps even the lying down/getting up has a discomfort factor to it ? has she been Xrayed for HD or elbow dysplasia ? a good behaviourist,IMO will observe them walking her , and assess things/refer to someone/help owners learn required skills if needed..not just say 'she doesn't know what to do '
  17. Playing on grass/with big toys/eating large bones /walking on different surfaces ..all NON SLIP NO walking/playing on shiny smooth floors Definitely do not try & swim him :)
  18. aaawwww :) thankyou. Love that sleeping photo !
  19. I'm glad you have a gorgeous new baby (photos???) and I am also very glad that you will soon be getting help with your dog :) Supervising a largeish dog with kids is necessary , but one second is all it takes for a claw to accidentally connect with an eyeball or mouth..and lead to all sorts of heartache .separation and good training are essential. Not sure if I posted this link for you previously..hope you can get from it, some useful info .
  20. Worth checking if occurrences are fairly evenly spaced ..then ask someone what nasties have a cycle like that ..or work out what happens at home, or in the park around that time ..spraying/fertilising/cleaning/mowing by council or private people.... ?
  21. better remove that photo...don't want to scare the kiddies!!! ;)
