7 Month Female Labrador Being Too Protective?
persephone replied to Chikko Baby's topic in Puppy Chat
..it does sound like a fear reaction... and it can be triggered by scent/body language/shape /manner of walking /voice pitch/sound... all sorts of things. have you read in this thread ? LINK there is THIS relevant to you, perhaps :) -
. ..and I am very glad you don't :) That is not a comfortable way at all to pick up a dog of any size, IMO ..they are not built like human babies .. maybeeeee? a couple of times a day ... take some yummy treats into the sink/bath ..place a towel on the floor of the sink/bath to stop any slipping (which I guess you do anyway, when washing him )... pick up dog ...no talking ...just march into the laundry..place him in teh tub ..keeping hold of his collar ..and stuff him with treats for a minute or so ..praising him if he eats them ... then , without speaking.. pick him up,and take him back to the lounge or wherever ....

I'm sorry you are having such an experience ..that poor pup . a baby puppy this ill is a real worry , and to my way of thinking ideally should be in hospital on a drip and being monitored. Like human babies , baby pups can go from ill to very ill so fast ..and dehydration happens while you watch - causing all sorts of problems. My suggestion would be another vet, I think.....unfortunately, good care does cost a lot of money .

You have a beautiful pup :) pups have MUCH higher rates than adult dogs, so don't panic - but someone else who has more expertise may be along soon. .... :) lovely photo.

Maybe add chicken hearts/livers /sardines/eggs/lamb flaps and a bit of yoghurt ?

Staffy Food Recommendations (skin Problems)
persephone replied to mooki's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Skin troubles are a headache What did your vet say ? Changing diet won't help a lot if there are things happening which are not an 'allergic reaction' What will help, IMO is getting a definite diagnosis , then changing diet /environment/management to assist healing :) -
:D she is now officially out of mourning !
-
:) she is having FUN!! The new boy has encouraged her to play and reminded her what fun chewing etc is , that's all.... We have an old tart of a dog .. in double figures and very sedate and "no I am stiff, I can not jump onto my bed"..however , when pups are being idiots..she is right in there..stealing toys, barking, running ...

My Favourite Subject, Can You Guess?

brilliant!! :D -
:) here's some reading for you. LINK

It is up to you. A young and healthy dog - if it were me, I would have fluids only if a spey, nothing if it was just a normal castration ..which is basically only a skin incision ,and takes hardly any time . Some pain post op helps the dog keep still and quiet for a little while ...

I wouldn't bother with the 'report because they are hitting it' , rather report because the poor pup was born a pit, and is never going to have a chance at a good and settled life with these owners. There are much worse things than a green dream.....and the owners may cop some flak. poor pup, and poor you having such a worrying behaviour by the neighbours so close

Not Itchy Or Raw...what Is It?
persephone replied to Chihuahuamumma's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Did the vet not check for ringworm? -
My boy is a disappointment ..and crazy, but I love him anyway :) He is 8 now .

Dju ..LOTS of guide dogs, for example live without a yard of their own :) They are with owners a lot , go out a couple or a few times a day , have lots to occupy their brain , and have learned to 'switch off' when inside . Yes, it takes work, and dedication ..but he is not too old to have a new lifestyle :)
-
I have a Xbreed .. one herding, one hunting /retrieving and knew both his parents , and am an experienced dog owner. he is not much like either parent ..and is somewhat crazy . I can not really see an ounce of his father in his looks or temperament ..and size wise he is heaps larger than his mum..his coat is his own, and her temperament unfortunately escaped him :p so ... it is NOT 50/50 . I looked forward to getting him as I had a similar cross before ... wrong .
-
...and IF you decide to buy a Xbreed from someone deliberately breeding them ...you may be fairly sure that they are basically in it for the money
-
. ...and if you get a dog from a reputable rescue whose dogs live in foster care before going to carefully screened homes - you get a lovely dog to suit you !

That dog will not forget about Hugo. Sound and scent are always present. Blocking vision though might help a bit. If the dog is a pit...then maybe someone you know ,and who lives elsewhere can just happen to notice it (maybe from the front of their place? ) and report it. A chicken wire/bamboo fence won't do much to keep a strong dog out. I recommend getting or making a looong line for Hugo ..so you can play fetch etc down the park /beach safely ..and do heaps of training, so when he's home, he is happy to veg out :) If you hear a fight ...the time it takes you to get out there and stop it may not be fast enough . A dog who is aggro and has latched on properly will really not hear/feel much Good luck with your plans :)

pretty much how humans are as well - eating something nice tends to help block bad experiences fora little while ..even if we a quite anxious.

:) sounds good for the puppy ,and I'm glad her health is on the improve!!

..waiting for the next chance to come into the shearing shed and do their thing :)

Dog Boarding And Obedience Training
persephone replied to tixx's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
..and this is my favourite sort of training scheme :) Welcome to D O L . You and your dog need to work together to become good communicators, and 'speak' the same language, IMO. Training your dog is certainly not 'done' in 2 weeks ...and by having another person train your dog , you miss out on seeing exactly HOW your dog learns , how he processes information , and , most important- you miss out on the opportunity to learn how to effectively communicate during this time . Dogs have a complex system of body language ..and all dogs learn at different speeds/have different rewards to which they respond best .By doing 1:1 training, your chosen professional can show you how your dog is thinking, why he is acting the way he does, and teach you the skills to communicate with, and train your dog. :) some reading for you LINK
