  1. ..a lot of GD users are not able, or willing to have a 'pet' dog . GD's are obviously allowed in houses/apartments where pets are not ...and caring for two dogs (what happens when walking a reactive lab with a guide dog as well ???? ) may also NOT be in this person's best interests. Sometimes HEAD must over rule HEART.
  2. ..and if the dog is working in an unsafe manner causing a fall, or worse? No benefit to having a dog and loving it if it puts you in an unsafe position , time & time again! perhaps re training will help ...perhaps. A guide dog is there for a purpose ..to enable safe travel .
  3. please alert the NSW guide dog folks!! This is dangerous in the extreme, and definitely NOT acceptable behaviour. alerting/reporting is not 'dobbing'..it is possibly saving a life or two. (P.O.V. of a one time trainer of guide dogs)
  4. .is that advice in relation to changing over of food..or a general rule? ..and how dangerous is that little bit of advice if general advice?! Some conditions can be very debilitating or even deadly if left for that long ! Diarrhoea can be caused by many many things ...and often very watery diarrhoea can signify a blockage , as only very liquid faeces can seep past - left for 3 days ... not a good prognosis! .
  5. I think it's about time for a vet visit ...... just in case .
  6. OH, gosh he was so young, and obviously his work was such a passion ....
  7. And this should not apply in any other communications on D O L ? How very sad.
  8. It's not at all:) Our dogs have a fast day every week ...
  9. IMO ..dogs stay MUCH warmer if they have a little igloo/den.This can be a crate, or a hooded basket, or a kennel ,or a cardboard box - the thing is that there are few drafts, and body heat gets trapped/circulated in a small enclosed space . It is well into teh minus temps here.. house is not heated ,and I have stopped putting a coat on Hamlet (very short coat, with no undercoat)at night! I find he is warmer and more settled when I cover him up instead :) With a coat on he curls right up to keep warm ..with a cover he sleeps stretched out a lot . he has his dinner , then about 20 mins later I tell him to have his bed time drink..then he goes on his bed, and gets covered up :) Most times he is still covered next morning , and I vary cover types ,depending on weather . he sleeps on a human stretcher bed which sags nicely, making a 'hole' ..then with his doona/blankets over the top , he is like a spotty dog pie! ..and very warm!! Just something to consider ?
  10. M-sass- this was a thread of grieving and support for a long term DOLer and her family . If you really need to do a court martial- maybe start a nice new thread ?It could well be an instructive and useful thread ..but this is not the place for such discussion.
  11. What breed/size/age of dog? Where does she sleep? is she a chewer?
  12. I had a bed sucker ... he was with me at home, at work , on holidays ... but I got him at between 1 -2 yrs old . he sucked his bed a lot... all his favourite bedding had these round holes in . It looked cute ..but was a problem. he also licked his forelegs. the only thing which gave him and me some respite was a visit to the chiropractor (mine!) He was then just very gently treated ..and for days after was such a mellow fellow - folks used to notice the difference!!
  13. It can definitely be a 'comfort' thing ..it can also be an indicator of pain in a joint ..... kep her well supplied with chewing opportunities for now... and maybe dab/spray on some bitter bite or similar ..don't use vicks or citronella - the odour will be annoying .
  14. To remove yourself and your dogs ..so fluffy has nothing to growl at ,and your dogs have nothing to evoke a response?
  15. Rozzie - I totally agree. Sending healing thoughts to your girl and her family ....
  16. Dog was on its own property - you had the option to remove yourself ....... end of story .
  17. what a worry . After all that money & effort and vigilance on your part..
  18. he looks like a wombat :p what a lovely boy - hope he has a temperament to match !
  19. Squinter- what has happened now? I hope that things worked out without heartache , and would love an update .
