had to laugh... I took his collar and lead off ... he trotted away & went to the toilet ..then went back to the 'training bed' , ( a place he hadn't been sleeping before) curled up ,& went to sleep :) yayyy, Freddie!

andrewang .. we use it as our dogs are working sheepdogs...we live in the bush, and dogs are chained when not working, or with us .pups are trained when young .. I do not recommend chaining dogs in suburbia ... 'tether training' is a good thing for dog shows etc .. :) So many people in suburbia now use crates to contain dogs as part of a training routine, or during illness :) ..nice roomy crates, and a period of crate training, have taken the place of tethers ..used for many years . Why do you want/need to tether your dog?

There are two base clinics in one town ..one is a decently equipped/accredited hospital ..and this practice also runs clinics during daytime at other small towns...

I know your area well ..and perhaps a specialist in Adelaide should have been consulted early on when the bitch was pregnant .. and then records of all testing etc could have been forwarded to the vet.It's not that long a drive... taking one or two dead pups to your vet would have given them a chance to SEE and examine the pups, and perhaps give a diagnosis. A POST WHELPING check could have been done today ... the vet is open .. and most vets, even young ones, can diagnose infections, and other problems associated with a long and mucky whelping. Oh..and we have attended a clinic in your town ..a 200 km round trip .. in the dark ....with a maiden bitch who was having trouble whelping .... luckily the drive there shook things up .. but she was checked and we were happy.

Aussie- yes he is :) She is getting her new teeth, and drags him around by the scruff ..tho she's lots smaller ... little horror..he just lies there...all spit & dirt :D

Oh..Ok .. I think I know the area where you live ..and AFAIK there are no reproductive medicine specialists with whom to speak ..... which makes things hard...and can mean you get inadequate information. ANY vet will have a problem diagnosing /advising problems with internal medicine over the phone .... but a repro vet at least has a more focussed view. I will again urge you to get the owner of this bitch to have her checked within 24 hrs, to avoid the chance of anything drastic happening ....Trust me , uterine interia /retained rotting puppies/infection .... I've seen it all, and wouldn't wish it on any dog.

Not meaning to sound smart .. but today would be a more appropriate time for a post whelp check ..to palpate the abdomen, and check for retained foetuses/placentas ..to see the discharge , to check bitch's general health , to examine a stillborn and make a tentative diagnosis, and to examine thoroughly the babies to rule out any deformities/inhaled fluid etc.

Fred is 5 mths and I have left his tether training later than usual Anyway - today's the day ..and this photo was taken a short time ago ..10 minutes into his very first session with collar & tether . As a reward for spending about a half hour quiet & just watching the world go by ..he now has an almost empty peanut butter jar to entertain himself :p

Oh ? So, no post whelping check of bitch & whelps is to be done at all ? I thought that was routine ..(or, it always used to be, )...especially after still births with an unknown cause , and a first litter .

Your friend really needs vet advice ASAP .... at least a phone call . It seems to me that whelping has gone on for a very long time ..... sad outcome

It can happen a lot :) It's usually nothing drastic , and the vet may just suggest flushing the sheath with , perhaps a saline solution , or something, rather than use A/B's Hope the vet check is a good one .

(or maybe in pain???) Ok... has this boy been thoroughly vet checked? My other thought is that he does have a physical problem with chewing/swallowing ..and has managed thus far ..but now he's presented with new things ..he has learnt that some things hurt/don't work ..so he just doesn't bother. perhaps the problem is not a constant ..but , like a cramp ... can happen every so often ...and perhaps, too, if he is really hungry, etc ..he will put up with teh pain? Supposition on my part .......but ............

:) he probably will still be around home for visits .... Installments sound a good plan for the cremation ..tough decision.

My guess is that he has never learned about these things!! This could be a Very Good Thing ..as y, until he does, there won't be pressure to guard/steal resources like ones you describe :)

Seems a fairly normal situation ... just observe, don't take risks like feeding/giving bones when they are together ....and see :)

Very pretty lamb :) We have trouble at lambing time ..and cannot use dogs that are large and have a lot of white, otherwise tiny lambs get confused and follow a moving figure that isn't their Mum. Dogs seem to enjoy mothering lambs - neighbour has a pet ewe with twins ..and their Lab bitch follows them most of the day ..licking the lambs, and playing with them, luckily 'Mum' is used to the dog, and so 'shares' happily :)

I daresay the dogs had their reasons..and we will probably never know. I just hope the police did their job cleanly and quickly.

I'm afraid here ..they just end up with a very cute crumpled ear as no one really worries about appearances here. :) What I DO use to help keep swelling down/reduce discomfort , is ARNICA - the cream, and also tablets. Luckily we have only ever had about 3 dogs affected . I hope your girl can get help without the anaesthetic problems :) I will use the cylinder method next time, I think..along with plenty of arnica !
